adele is too mainstream for my taste...besides i knew about her like a year ago.....but civil war....i mean...theres something about them that draws u in....
Very few things have the capabilities to bring goosebumps to my skin. Its like I'm a robot incapable of getting that reaction to something as simple and intangible as music... this has finally done it.
"if i ever had a dream at night id dream about a prayer id dream i was soaring beneath the clouds in the moonlight air that i have butterflies in my hair and angels by my side telling me a prayer of freedom and everlasting love!!!"
I don't really like how the Civil Wars and Adele keep being compared. Both are amazingly talented, but personally I think the Civil Wars put more emotion into their music, idk. Just when they perform live they get so into it, like their losing themselves in the music. Their songs are beautiful. Their voices are perfect together.
@BL4CKC4TMEG Maybe because both (adele and tcw) are great singer-songwriters with amazing vocals ,and their music has an acoustic style, and both have romantic love as a main theme in their compositions. Maybe also because the couple opened some of Adele's concerts during her usa tour last year, and Adele fell in love with them, as she even recommended them in her official site blog. Just maybe.
@missinglew Ohh, okay, I didn't realise they opened for her. That makes more sense now:) And true, they are both great singer-songwriters, it just wouldn't have occured to me to compare them because I don't really view their styles as similar:)
You know it's so weird.. I listen to so many different music from Beyonce to Kendrick Lamar to Odd Future and then there is this kind of music. And when I'm listening to this song I can't bare to download it illegally as if for the others, I would. So odd... Love The Civil Wars
@rockachick909 agreed listening to music on the radio these days is like listening to nothing but meaningless noise. The civil wars are a group that inspire me and that are wonderfully talented!
@Leadman1989 I'm not being a dick about it, I'm just saying that some songs on the radio are made just to earn money instead of really pooring emotion into it. For example Kesha who's not a singer and shouldn't be on the radio. None of her songs make sense. Music is supposed to be emotion not talking about sex and getting drunk.
Honestly, I feel that they sound sooo much better out of the studio. So much raw talent in their voices. Amazing group with more talent than any human should have!
Agree with suhayla11 that Cohen should've been given top billing; although I think Leonard's voice is kinda perfect for what he has to say. His voice is a great gift either way. This is a very cool version of the song- check out Klezmer Conservatory for a gorgeous version also.
Melancholia (melənˈkōlēə) = Deep sadness or gloomy.
My definition = A certain recall triggered by a specific thought, sound, sight, smell or taste of an undergone physical experience which in turn results in a sad and sometimes gloomy feeling sensation state.
From an spiritual point of reference, it is the deep sensation felt by every human being, at a subconscious level, every time there is a recall of the earlier life lived in a sort of 'garden of even' where every relation was perfect.
did you know that, while Cohen was in monastery refining his life, the guy in charge of managing his music business- ripped him off and swindled most of his money away. Cohen came out of the monastery not wanting to be a monk and finding out that he was broke.
This is real music, this is real stuff here. not the crappy electronic stuff you here on the radio. Im fourteen and all my friends listen to that horrible rap that talks about sex and drugs all the time, and gosh i hate it!!! artist like The Civil Wars and Adele really need to be noticed like this. they are real emotion and music. love it<3
@rockachick909 I feel the same way too. But I listen to screamo music. Have you heard their song with Taylor Swift entitled "Safe and Sound" Its from the Hunger Games soundtrack, but beofre you see the movie you should read the book. This group is really talanted to me.
@TheHummingOwl Joy Williams and John Paul White just have a professional relationship together. It's confusing see as they make such beautifully emotional and loving music together! But no, both have their own seperate love relationships and are married to different people. Disapointing, right? I know!! :( lol.. But love in my book, comes in many shapes and formes most people have yet to understand. So I like to think they are very close in their own way that is unique and beautiful! :)
@auralnalle They're not married to each other, they're married to other people. But I wish they were married to each other because they'd make such a beautiful couple<3
REMINDER: I DO NOT have anything to do with The Civil Wars publicity or music! I am Not a Civil Wars or music stalker! I don't wish to disown or take away credit, I didn't do my HW on this song before making the video! So unless you are about to invest million's into who ever wrote this song RIGHT NOW and almost invested it into the musicians performing it instead, then it would still be a mistake at best! Other wise, Don't look at who's name is under "Music by" and just listen! Thank you :)
Originally by Leonard Cohen! Boooo to uploader! Super uncool to not cite the original songwriter. That being said, this is the best version I've ever heard :) Madeleine Peyroux's is great, but this is just the best. cohen was a great songwriter, but his voice just didn't get there..
Its official it was meant to be. I'll take this as a sign that I'm meant to be a fan of theirs. I've been hearing & planning to cover this song but Madeleine Peyroux's version for months now. I love their little take on it. Civil Wars you made a new fan today. You're music is entrancing xoxo!
I don't consider The Civil Wars as modern country. Some of their songs are like rock crossed with folk, some such as this one are melancholia crossed with folk, and still others are pure folk. No matter what you call them, they are an amazing pair, and when they got together, something greater than the sums of their two abilities came out of it. I had a terrible migraine so i decided to just listen to a few of the civil wars songs and my headache was gone completely awedome relaxing soulful music!
Love this group. I don't really think of this as country though. They are folksy. Although country today is a mix of a lot. Who cares what you call it? I like this as well as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Kenny.. well not so much Kenny .
Ok people where do you think that country music came from? It sure didnt come from rock and roll it came from folk music so for the people that say its not country it can be
I cant believe they are not a couple. I mean their voices fit so well together and they have an obvious chemistry but alas both are married to different people.
out of all the covers and the original I have to say this is the best one that I have ever heard. thank you civil wars for being awesome and doing covers like this. I love this song its one of my favorite (if not my favorite) song the album.
Yes, this is a Leonard Cohen song. It would be respectful if the person posting it gave it a correct attribution. Beautiful interpretation The Civil Wars have done.
I like it. It sounds folky and nice. c: I love "Barton Hollow" and "Poison and Wine" and mostly "To Whom It May Concern". This is a quickly rising new favorite, though! So much love. c:

Fully agree they've got a great sound, Sepheroth. However, this song is a cover of a folk song by none other than the man himself, Leonard Cohen. It frustrates me they do not credit him, confusing at least 48 people who agreed with you. Also, this is by no means a country song. Just a little FYI for y'all
