One; it's likely that he did NOT do the transcription.
Two; As an expert on his many advanced books and arrangements...this one is not typical of his arr. His arr are usually of high quality and would NEVER sacrifice ease for musical concepts.
Just goes to show no good deed goes unpunished. Emily I am a new student just now learning to play Fur Elise from the Pakenings book. My goal is to start with classical for technique. Your vidoes are very useful for someone on my level that have no intention of studying Beethoven or any other classical music. I just want to learn to play the guitar and not study music. Keep the videos coming.
well, the equipment was pretty simple. I turned iMovie on and hit record. In the future, I hope to record with something that gets better audio quality. Thanks for the kind remarks!
I don't disagree with you that any pianist would go aaack at the transcription. Maybe you could do a transcription that I could give my students! I always am looking for new music and better transcriptions! Thanks again for the comment!
i appreciate the comment. Beethoven would have been unhappy with the transcription, but for a student playing guitar only a month, he/she is very happy to even come close to playing such a popular classical piece. The transcription is not intended to copy Beethoven's marvelous work, only let a young guitarist enjoy it's theme.
Teaching a "young guitarist" to do something wrong with fine music is never good.
Either you have standards or you don't.
It's simple; just don't play the first two notes on separate strings. Problem solved.
Anyone who knows anything about Beethoven and about the piece knows that Beethoven was very particular about his music and this would drive him nuts to hear (while he still could) a dissonance where he did not intend it.
@Rexicano At least I have shown my ability. You just complained about a brilliant recording. You have 0 uploads. And don't mock the music I play. That arrangement of Hotel California took two weeks to transcribe, three weeks to memorize, and two more weeks to perfect. Also, I've only been playing guitar for a year and a half, and I've had no lessons. Then you have Whiskey in the Jar, where I learned the piece BY EAR. I used no tabs or sheet music. Bar Band music? Kiss my ass. At least I perform.
@Rexicano Well the book she is working from is an introductory text for classical guitar and contains a number of modified transcriptions with this consideration. The book was never intended to provide performance quality scores - only simplified versions that support the concept being taught in a particular chapter.
Might I say that my realativly chea excel guitar has the best sound. Even my friends 400 dollar guitar sounds a little dull to this wonder instrument.
hey I see that your a music teacher... I play Acoustic (not the classical method)... I wanted to study classical guitar...
What would be the best way to learn? i just bought the Christopher Parkenings Method Book... and now im looking for a classical guitar... is there any specific guitar that you would recomend... I saw a "Francisco Navarro" which im thinking of buying...
I would appreciate a professional's opinion... it would really help...

Nice rendition. Can I ask what equipment you used to record this and put it on YouTube? I'd like to record something at some point. (:

Look at the Piano score;
the First E note is not sustained.
The proper way to play the opening is with both notes fretted and avoiding the dissonance.
It's a poor transcription in this regard.
Beethoven was very specific.

If you have a sensitive ear;
it just spoils the theme...it's very grating.
It's not all that much harder to do it right.
I'm surprised that Parkening, who has such high standards in general...would have a transcription that violates the piece in such a basic way.
I guess it matters, or it doesn't. To me it does. And hundreds of people don't know but any good pianist hearing this would probably go aacccckkk!

Have to RESPECT the music.

You should stick to Hotel California and another Bar Band music because you're way out of your depth.

Nicely done. Did you study with Christopher Parkening? He is spectacular. Thanks for the clear images of your fingering.
