@pyrofella the school was moved to another property to be used as a house addition from what I have heard. There was an old store that has fallen down too, and the old car that was in the shed has been removed by someone too.
They don't really abandon it everyone just started moving and soon hardly anyone lived there so buildings just closed down and soon everybody was just gone.
Yea dendu they leave because there are no jobs over there. I grew up in a small town in MN of 300. There might still be 300 people there but 30 years after I left the only business in town is the bars.
LOL I would stay there it would be the most peaceful place in the world. Hardly any nosey people hardly any cops. Thats where i need to go. I willbe happy there.
Reminds me of a few towns I explored in MT, out past west of Glasgow. Lots of abandoned shit out there, history is really well preserved, and un chaved...unlike bigger cities.
When these places become abandoned, farmers and ranchers end up buying the land and using it for grazing since they need a lot of it. There is no one in the town, but there are ranches in the area.
This place jogs a memory, I may have been there a few decades ago when I was stationed in Minot. It looks so familiar, I remember being in a place like this and finding an old model a or T headlight lens at an old farm, seems like it was near the barn. It's been a long time since I've seen that long view landscape. Truth be told I don't miss it either, it feels forlorn and lonely.
There is a larger town about 10 miles East of there that has a decent-sized population, so after the post office closed in the 1960's, there really were no services there, so I think people just packed up and moved out. The Lutheran Church merged with a nearby church also, so that is why that one closed.
@jpipsqueak ITs always so sad when that happens. All these cute little towns that were there first r rapidly disapearing. To bad we cant preserve our history better. :-/ Where i live all the places that have been abandon r almost instantly torn down and made into something new.
HOLY SHIT, my dad owned a pontiac catalina. An indian head pops up in the dash when you flip on the highbeams. cool as shit. I would try to get it running for shits and giggles. Pop a battery in there and see if it turns over:D
At three 3:00 to 3:01 there is a white line moving at the left side of the road....what was it???..I used a video editor to take any fake items out of the video but this white line is 100% genuine
I'd get that catalina and restore it!!!! Dude those old cars are worth mega bucks!!! I have seen some go for as much as 60 grand restored! For that one you might get 2-3 grand. I work in a vintage junkyard:D
Somebody already took it. In the time between when I shot this video and one year later, someone must have loaded it up and took it away. Have you seen one on craigslist lately?
@grettagrids I KNOW!!! I saw that, and I thought "OMG he doesn't know he's standing next to GOLD." Despite how it looked, the car didn't appear to be that bad of shape. Easily restorable.
The Pontiac is no longer in that garage (but the TV is, *whew*).
There is a spray painted sign on the fence surrounding the school, saying "Keep Out - Private". There is also a large hole in the school floor - apparently from a fire. There is a wonderful decomposing deer carcass hanged through the window of the white house, closest the school.
Neither my wife, nor I, could find a good explanation for all the recent household trash around.
I touched ND over a year ago.We drove from Minn to Fargo then back.ND was state # 49 for me.Later in the year I flew to Hawaii so that was my final state.
You should really go back and check out the inside sometime. The school is open and some of the houses still have some stuff in them. I checked out some of your photos on flickr, nice job. If you get out that way again, the St. Olaf Church 10 miles nw of tioga is great too. I have photos of that on Flickr and a video here as well.
There are towns on each side of it that are larger and have some businesses and post offices. It probably wasn't practical to live out there when you could find what you needed so close by. There probably weren't enough kids for the school anymore either.
It looks like farm land. Way back when, farmers had no rights. They lost their lands, their houses were sold, everything on their land was auctioned off if they had a bad season and the crops would'nt grow ect. They made a movie about it in the 80's. This is probably what happened here. Sad as hell. Farmers houses were passed down to them for generations and then taken from them by the law.
The movie that your referring to in the 80's was due to the farm economy and banking which went to hell temporarily in the 80's...thats why there were farmers in the 80s that lost their farms.
thanks feterlj, also, would you happen to know the name of that other movie that was made in the early 80's about the couple who moved onto a farm and the milk went bad due to something in the feed- people died, a true story?
The movie portrays the true story of what happened in the ealy 80's- people all over the US were dieing from drinking the milk and mothers breast feeding their kids were going to the doc to get tested to see if they had it in their milk. This went on for 2 years. It was reported at first, when the farmer discovered it and no one took him seriously, even though his own baby died from it.
Yea I dont know the name of that movie. The only farming tradegy that I know about is the banking/farm economy crisis in the 80's...we watched that movie in my AG class when I was in high school...
Also this was an abandon town, not an abandon farm...it is now farm land but used to be a town. There are abandon ghost towns scattered all over the midwest... there was two of them north of Salem, SD where I grew up.
It is sad to see old abandoned towns in our state but even sadder to see the results of sick and twisted minds that have had to wreck, destroy and demolish everything that former inhabitants of these towns have left. Old historic buildings, schools, churches, etc. have been destroyed by these sick individuals. Alot of memories have vanished with this destruction.
I live in Williston so I go here alot but the last time i was there a farmer came and told me and my friends to leave. Once we were there at night and the bell started ringing. When was this taken?
It was august 2007. I only saw one other car and that was driven by an old lady who came out there with 2 other old ladies just because they didn't have anything to do on a sunday afternoon and decided to drive out to Temple.
I liked the tour of the school. I've seen buildings like it. There is one in use in Baldwin (north of Bismarck), and one in use in Amidon (western end of the state).
They're all so similar, but with subtle differences. I've never seen one with the bell tower like the one in Temple.
I check out the town on Google Earth.... it appears now that the school has either fallen down or has been partly demolished...
