Gypsy (Romani) don't dance like this. We tap dance, clap, raise arms and play Guitar but belly dancing is certainly not a part of our culture. Traditionally our women certainly don't dress this and wouldn't show nakedness on their midriff. Especially in front of strangers and non-family. Please try learn the truth of our culture. I wish Goriya (non-Romani white women) would stop pretending and get there facts straight. Please be respectful and change the name from "Gypsy" to something else.
@Tsigano I've actually seen egyptian romani doing bellydance in a movie called Latcho Drom that follows different tribes. They also use different musical instruments from place to place, some don't even have guitars, but it's true that none of the women had their midriff exposed. Anyway, Gypsy Caravan is the name of their dance group doing "American Tribal Style" wich is an americanized mix of different influences (bellydance, flamenco, gypsy) I think most people know it's not the real thing.
@Lulusque Well that is strange as there aren't to my knowledge any Romani in Egypt. I thought they were all Halebi / Domari and they aren't Romani. I have seen Romani do Jazz dancing in Europe and Latin dance in South America but this as I have seen many Gaje (non-Romani) doing the same in these countries. It does not make it Romani dancing. I have seen many different people of Egypt and similar countries such as Turkey do belly dance. That is because the dance is common to the people over there
looks intersting. but it s confusing to use "taksim" as the name of a dance step, which it is absolutely not. it means "solo" and is used for musical solos, mostly dramatic "snake like dancing encouraging" flute playing. although that s not a must it could be any other instrument.
i ve thought about buying it - i m not sure if i ll like tribal, but might give it a try i m absolutely sure it s from the arabic word taksim, taqseem, or however you want to write it which means "solo" :) you can write it as you want, as it s a transcript oft he arabic alphabet and only pronounciation is important. rgds, dina
Taksim is the word American Tribal Style Bellydancers use to refer to an upward hip figure 8 and/or (depending upon who you're talking to) the entire slow movement vocabulary. Generally ATSers acknowledge this is somewhat of a misnomer but it's usage in this way is specific to ATS/ITS, not only Gypsy Caravan.

OOOOH really that s confusing! haha sorry for spreading the "false" meaning from a tribal point of view :)
it would indeed have been smarter to use a term not already "taken" by a musical denomination, but that s the way it is I guess :)
