But the point is that every filmmake makes movies that some like and some dont. He is successfull and the latest critics shows that he is making great movies. For example "Darfur", "Stoic", or "Rampage".

In the first few chapters of catch 22 we are introduced to a major who was a very special business manager before the war started. His specialty was making businesses fail. This might sound as easy as falling off a log and economically perverse but the fact was that there were wealthy people out there who needed to make a loss for tax reasons with a company that is guaranteed to fail without untimely rescue from government grants and such. Uwe does not portray any sense of depth in his story telling, and if you watch in the name of the king you can't say that he doesn't want to get rich. He used star quality like mad to try and make money. Alone in the dark is a disgrace and im not sure any one who has a balanced opinion on film cold give any good points about the film except maybe the bullet shot.

Uwe Boll's father was a millionaire/billionaire and he is using his inheritance to pay for the films. on average he makes a 10% return on them which is about 10-20 million
Strange theory and i don't know from where you got this info, but one things for sure: He financed his films until 2005 with money from media stocks and since then he finances them with profits from his own film distribution company.
So i really believe the "his rich father makes it possible for him to make film"-story is just a "sounds good" legend ;)
The only reason anyone would call an Ed Wood film "enjoyable" would be that they were taken-in by the quaint, anachronistic nature of his movies, and/or have become endeared to Wood's personality thanks to Tim Burton. I don't think Boll's movies are any better than Wood's, they aren't, nor are they particularly worse. The biggest difference between them is that Boll seems to have enough knowledge of the craft that it seems as though his movies are bad on purpose, as if to spite the audience.
Loved the part where he said "I have no idea where you get the money for your films". I totally agree with you though. Uwe Boll's movies are crap, but at least they can be used as examples about how NOT to make a movie.

Billy Zane? I don't think I've seen him in a film since the 80's. Look, I don't know or care about Myths, I just care when good games get ass raped by his blurred and terrible vision of bring them to the big screen. And no, Doom wasm't the best adapation, but it had a couple of nice touches like the FPV and the BFG. Postal is probably the best film he'll ever do because it's just as insane as he can be. But he fucked up Alone In The Dark, because he said it didn't have enough car chases.

First off. Boll's films usually only make a minor fraction back on the budget shelled out to make them. And second, this guy is making films on Youtube, wheres Boll's are geting released in theaters, with professional actors (*Snort*) crew, production, writing and things like that, people are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for what they do. It' sclear this guy isn't. Face it, Boll is a terrible director. I might not be any better, but at least I have the humility to admit it, unlike Boll.

Check your facts. His films do make money. They bomb at the cinema but they make it up with tv/dvd sales. He is only really hated in the U.S. Movie websites tend to keep track theatrical grosses not dvd and tv grosses as they are on going. In 30 year he will be still getting dvd/tv money from House of the Dead. Come on, don't be so stupid, he gets investor because his films make money. His budgets tend to be small so it really hard for him NOT to make a profit.
For sure. ITNOTK is the expection to the rule. His average budgets are around 3 to 7. His latest movie he shot for 2. ITNOTK was about the cost of all his over budgets combined. He is never going to make a 50 million film again. But as ITNOTK has so many stars in it he can ask a much bigger price for it. I think it will do great business of tv and its dvd sales have been pretty strong.

Lastly, he isn't accountable for damaging any ones careers. These actors can make their own decisons. They're grown up. They sign on for the money and must pay the repurcussions. And I'm sure none of them will have that much trouble getting another job. Jason Statham was just in The Bank Job, a huge hit. Burt Reynolds and Ray Liotta's careers were already over by the time they did In the Name of the King.

There's always going to be flops. I don't think Boll's 4 or 5 flops will really affect investors that much, especially since investors in Boll's movies made money (through a German tax loop).

Second of all, the reason he gets money is because he's a business genius.
The most important part of any film is if it makes money. Film is strictly business. If you can have an art picture and still make money, then you are a true genius. Boll typically makes unoriginal and money losing films. In the Name of the King was made for 50 million, it has only brought in 11 million worldwide. The actors in Boll's films typically appear uninterested and just delivering lines without caring about making the scenes work. That makes for a bad directing and bad business
The most important part is money? Um...maybe from a producers or studios standpoint, but I'd hope that a filmmaker would care more about the quality of the film rather than how much money it makes.
Quality is extremely important, but everything has to have a balance. You always have to figure how how big your audience is, and how much they are willing to pay, and balance that with the maximum amount quality for the lowest budget possible. That is how you continue to keep getting work. Eastwood is a great example of this. Some times he makes crappy movies, but he does them for cheap and under budget. Unlike my hero Sergio Leone, he was always on max quality and didnt make that many films
I do realize that you have to pay attention to the business side of things. But if I were to direct a movie, the most important thing for me would be the quality of the film. I'd rather make a great movie that does poorly rather than a piece of crud that makes hundreds of millions.
There's a lot of independent filmmakers working with the same mentality these days, making movies on their own dime. These are usually the movies worth watching, not the ones that did good at the box office.

I wish I couldn't hate him. I haven't even seen his films. But this guy seems like a jerk! He seems very dislikable. It's not the finger or the swearing (I don't mind those at all, I even think people make big deals about them), but his egotistical and angry attitude are are damn annoying! I can't say his films suck until I've seen them, but I've seen him, and I don't like him! Raging Boll?! What if Sly Stallone went Rocky on everyone who didn't like Rocky IV or V? You just don't do that!

In the first few chapters of catch 22 we are introduced to a major who was a very special business manager before the war started. His specialty was making businesses fail. This might sound as easy as falling off a log and economically perverse but the fact was that there were wealthy people out there who needed to make a loss for tax reasons with a company that is guaranteed to fail without untimely rescue from government grants and such. I think Uwe has the same deal.

Problems
1. Is he really that good? (I mean I haven't seen any of his movies, but I can't see him being that great. Is Bloodrayne or Alone in the Dark really as good as Jaws? or E.T.? Raiders? Close Encounters?)
2. He has terrible PR.

@Buubbbels Uwe Boll makes terrible films. There are hundreds of directors that are better than him that get no recognition. Uwe does not portray any sense of depth in his story telling, and if you watch in the name of the king you can't say that he doesn't want to get rich. He used star quality like mad to try and make money. Alone in the dark is a disgrace and im not sure any one who has a balanced opinion on film cold give any good points about the film except maybe the bullet shot.

Sometimes I think Uwe Boll is some sort of mad scientist of movies, hell, he even has the title Dr. Uwe Boll. I wonder if he's just crazy or makes horrible films to spite his audiences and other directors. But honestly as bad as his films are, I would sign a petition for him to make more, just to see how crazy he might be. it's almost heroic that he proceeds making bad movie after movie and when anyone else would give up he boxes his critics and makes another bad movie. He's like an anti-hero.

Strange theory and i don't know from where you got this info, but one things for sure: He financed his films until 2005 with money from media stocks and since then he finances them with profits from his own film distribution company.
So i really believe the "his rich father makes it possible for him to make film"-story is just a "sounds good" legend ;)

The only reason anyone would call an Ed Wood film "enjoyable" would be that they were taken-in by the quaint, anachronistic nature of his movies, and/or have become endeared to Wood's personality thanks to Tim Burton. I don't think Boll's movies are any better than Wood's, they aren't, nor are they particularly worse. The biggest difference between them is that Boll seems to have enough knowledge of the craft that it seems as though his movies are bad on purpose, as if to spite the audience.

Billy Zane? I don't think I've seen him in a film since the 80's. Look, I don't know or care about Myths, I just care when good games get ass raped by his blurred and terrible vision of bring them to the big screen. And no, Doom wasm't the best adapation, but it had a couple of nice touches like the FPV and the BFG. Postal is probably the best film he'll ever do because it's just as insane as he can be. But he fucked up Alone In The Dark, because he said it didn't have enough car chases.

He stopped using "stupid german money" meaning the film fonds by 2005 ( and shot 7 films after so far!!! ) - thus having financed those films regulary. beeing a bad director, well again I´ve seen worse and again doom ( the movie) is at least as far away from the game and as bad as far cry but really nobody gets excited about doom !

Funny enough, yesterday I got to know uwe boll personally - nice guy by the way and the actors who worked with him incl. billy zane do like him !! His films by the way do pay off - manly through the dvd releases, but they do get their money back otherwise he´d be bankrupt by now. Another myth :

Boll bashing, anyway. actually I took a look at your milkman short : acting mediocre, camera nothing special, dialogs very mediocre, not a piece of excitig cinema either to tell the truth. and one thing is wrong : bolls film do make money, whether you like them or not. they won´t make film history books or influence the art of filmmaking but they are not worse than for example the rambo 2 - 5 trash ! First off. Boll's films usually only make a minor fraction back on the budget shelled out to make them. And second, this guy is making films on Youtube, wheres Boll's are geting released in theaters, with professional actors (*Snort*) crew, production, writing and things like that, people are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for what they do. It' sclear this guy isn't. Face it, Boll is a terrible director. I might not be any better, but at least I have the humility to admit it, unlike Boll.

Check your facts. His films do make money. They bomb at the cinema but they make it up with tv/dvd sales. He is only really hated in the U.S. Movie websites tend to keep track theatrical grosses not dvd and tv grosses as they are on going. In 30 year he will be still getting dvd/tv money from House of the Dead. Come on, don't be so stupid, he gets investor because his films make money. His budgets tend to be small so it really hard for him NOT to make a profit.

For sure. ITNOTK is the expection to the rule. His average budgets are around 3 to 7. His latest movie he shot for 2. ITNOTK was about the cost of all his over budgets combined. He is never going to make a 50 million film again. But as ITNOTK has so many stars in it he can ask a much bigger price for it. I think it will do great business of tv and its dvd sales have been pretty strong.

If Boll didnt produce these films himself, he would definitly be in Director prison. Every US filmmaker that doesnt make money ends up going there. No, hate would be much stronger. I actually kinda respect Boll,mainly for his attitude. He takes a Snake Plissken view of life and he backs up his words with his fists. That is really cool, even if he makes utter garbage films. If you want to know a director I hate, well that would be Tarantino. He claims to love Leone, but in truth he is the Anti-Leone. He makes fils that are built opposite the way they should be. He also makes a mockery of Morricone's music, and that's an unforgivable sin

Lastly, he isn't accountable for damaging any ones careers. These actors can make their own decisons. They're grown up. They sign on for the money and must pay the repurcussions. And I'm sure none of them will have that much trouble getting another job. Jason Statham was just in The Bank Job, a huge hit. Burt Reynolds and Ray Liotta's careers were already over by the time they did In the Name of the King.

There's always going to be flops. I don't think Boll's 4 or 5 flops will really affect investors that much, especially since investors in Boll's movies made money (through a German tax loop).

The most important part of any film is if it makes money. Film is strictly business. If you can have an art picture and still make money, then you are a true genius. Boll typically makes unoriginal and money losing films. In the Name of the King was made for 50 million, it has only brought in 11 million worldwide. The actors in Boll's films typically appear uninterested and just delivering lines without caring about making the scenes work. That makes for a bad directing and bad business

Quality is extremely important, but everything has to have a balance. You always have to figure how how big your audience is, and how much they are willing to pay, and balance that with the maximum amount quality for the lowest budget possible. That is how you continue to keep getting work. Eastwood is a great example of this. Some times he makes crappy movies, but he does them for cheap and under budget. Unlike my hero Sergio Leone, he was always on max quality and didnt make that many films

I do realize that you have to pay attention to the business side of things. But if I were to direct a movie, the most important thing for me would be the quality of the film. I'd rather make a great movie that does poorly rather than a piece of crud that makes hundreds of millions.
There's a lot of independent filmmakers working with the same mentality these days, making movies on their own dime. These are usually the movies worth watching, not the ones that did good at the box office.
