Building a model of the world is sort of like bodybuilding in the sense that diet, food, supplements and sleep are needed. The term "medicine man" is more than a metaphor. A bodybuilder that eats at McDonalds will not do as well as one that eats properly. Similarly, I think that diet and supplements can be used to understand the world. @BestVideoResponse I think its important not to focus too much on science alone, since religious people often claim that science does describe but not EXPLAIN. Well, Philosophy can be used in an attempt to explain the world. And a much better and more "sincere" one, too, since it does not rest on supernatural claims which many people must be forced to (or force themselves to) believe.
I was born and bred on atheism. I've seen others in my position turn to religion later in life. It always struck me as silly how they turned to churches and doctrine even when it contradicted all that they learned about science.
I do have a strong criticism of atheism though. It's that atheism only looks at science. IMHO, this is wrong. Subjectivity has a strong place in my existence if it involves learning baseball or dream interpretation or intuition.

Anyone who says sexism is not an issue in "modern society" is obviously in denial. I have worked in a male dominated field for 10 years, and deal with sexism every single day. It's like the people who say there is no racism in the U.S. We have not come as far as we would like to think on either of these issues. Of course, if you're a white man, you don't see it this way.

I love how that Skepchick person thinks Dawkins' death threats are fucking hilarious--she even has one for her ring tone HAHA! Because Islamic terrorists and other idiot fundies never kill anyone. But when it comes to her threats, there like totally super cereal guys because she's a woman. How she manages to be so oblivious of her own hypocrisy is beyond me.
I think I understand why Dawkins looked so nauseated throughout her presentation. He was right to cut off this lame duck.
Many of Rebecca Watson's points are valid, as one can see just from reading the comments here, but she is completely irresponsible and, dare I say, "privileged" to spend all that time talking about it on *the wrong panel*. There were less than 10 seconds of her speech that were actually about how to communicate atheism.
Wow, I am totally stuned. Mouth dropped open. These comments are overwhelmingly hateful toward this woman for daring to state what she has experienced. Someone even called her a cunt for her experience/opinion. This is all very disheartening. I came to atheism after a lifetime of religious indoctrination. One of the main things that lead me in this direction was the obvious hatred for women in the bible and Christianity. Damn. Whoa.
@MariMattie I think you may be reacting with a bit of knee-jerk here. You correctly say "hateful toward THIS woman" but then conflate hatred of an individual human with their entire gender. Though it may be crude or mean, I hardly find it misogynistic if someone says "this woman is a cunt." Her sex is incidental here; they're simply saying "I hate things about this person."
And you can't think it's sexist to disagree with her hijacking of an panel on ATHEISM to rant about a non-incident.
11 minutes in - she laughs at the "awesome" threats that Dawkins gets. She calls them "hilarious." She made one of them her "ringtone." Everyone gets a good laugh about it. However, we must all be ever-so-serious and treat as a crime against humanity, similar emails that she receives. Does anyone else see the incongruity here?
Its awesome how some people seem to think that sexism is exclusive to males discriminating against females. To everyone who agrees with this, you are so dumb.
This type of feminism is designed to make all men guilty all of the time for something a very small percentage of men are actually responsible for. It is not unlike religion manipulating guilt to trick more people (sources of income) into willingly enslaving themselves.
I agreed with much of the stuff that Rebecca said, but I do take issue with her stance that the sexual fanmail she gets is born from sexism. I don't think it's born from sexism at all, but more born from rudeness and a general lack of control. I, being gay, often fantasize sexually about males. The reason I don't TELL them about these fantasies or DESCRIBE the fantasies to them is because I have a measure of self-control. Some people are just very rude, but that doesn't mean they're sexist.

Building a model of the world is sort of like bodybuilding in the sense that diet, food, supplements and sleep are needed. The term "medicine man" is more than a metaphor. Well, Philosophy can be used in an attempt to explain the world. I was born and bred on atheism. I've seen others in my position turn to religion later in life. It always struck me as silly how they turned to churches and doctrine even when it contradicted all that they learned about science.
I do have a strong criticism of atheism though. It's that atheism only looks at science. IMHO, this is wrong. Subjectivity has a strong place in my existence if it involves learning baseball or dream interpretation or intuition.

She has to bring another perspective. We don't exactly have that many outspoken female atheists out there. "Communicating Atheism" is pretty freakin' wide range of topics. This is one.

The issue is which faith the scientific evidence best supports. BLIND WATCHMAKER NO ARGUMENT. Natural selection is no "blind watchmaker" because it can only "select" from variations produced having survival value. It doesn't produce variations. It only operates once there is life and reproduction, not before, so it couldn't be involved in life's origins. A partially-evolved cell (an oxymoron) would quickly disintegrate. GENETIC INFORMATION DOESN'T HAPPEN BY CHANCE, so it's more logical to believe that genetic similarities between all forms of life are due to a common Designer who designed similar functions for similar purposes. ALL REAL EVOLUTION ( i.e. varieties of dogs, cats, etc.) is the expression, over time, of already existing genes. Evolution is possible only if there’s information (genes) directing it. Only variations of already existing genes are possible, which means only limited evolution and adaptations are possible. NOT ALL EVOLUTIONISTS even agree on the fossils used to support and reconstruct human evolution. The bones are incomplete. There's no certainty of the bones belonging to the same creature. They can reconstruct whatever they want from these bones, and they have. There's no hard evidence that humans evolved from an ape-like creature anymore than there's hard evidence that apes evolved from a four-legged dog-like creature. APES ARE QUITE COMFORTABLE IN HOW THEY WALK, just as humans are quite comfortable in how they walk. Even a slight change in the position of a muscle or bone, for either, would be excruciatingly painful and would not be an advantage for survival. There's no hard evidence that humans evolved from ape-like creature anymore than there's hard evidence that apes evolved from four-legged dog-like creatures. It's like the people who say there is no racism in the U.S. We have not come as far as we would like to think on either of these issues. Of course, if you're a white man, you don't see it this way.

Someone even called her a cunt for her experience/opinion. This is all very disheartening. I came to atheism after a lifetime of religious indoctrination. This type of feminism is designed to make all men guilty all of the time for something a very small percentage of men are actually responsible for. It is not unlike religion manipulating guilt to trick more people (sources of income) into willingly enslaving themselves.

I agreed with much of the stuff that Rebecca said, but I do take issue with her stance that the sexual fanmail she gets is born from sexism. I don't think it's born from sexism at all, but more born from rudeness and a general lack of control. I, being gay, often fantasize sexually about males. The reason I don't TELL them about these fantasies or DESCRIBE the fantasies to them is because I have a measure of self-control. Some people are just very rude, but that doesn't mean they're sexist.
