Sunbeam and its WHDH/WSVN are the Evil Empire. The company is largely responsible for prompting the transformation of many local news broadcasts into a fast-paced "show" that is light on substance and heavy on style.
In the matter of Sunbeam's acquisition of WLVI, they are not really to blame. It was the Tribune Company that made the decision to sell Channel 56 to Ed Ansin.
The way WHDH handled this was so uncalled for, cold and just plain wrong on so many levels. To buy a station and then fire all the employees ONE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS?? Karma is starting to bite you in the ass Ch. 7 ratings arn't that great right now and hopefully will get worse!
In the immortal words of Jerry Seinfeld, "Eh, that's a shame"...def a tragic chapter in Boston TV history, as Jack Hynes put it. Kudos to Hynes for pulling no punches in his assessment of the situation and being right on the money.
What I miss about local TV both here in Boston and (maybe) nationally is that you don't get the local flavor of TV that people can bring as opposed to having someone being transplanted to that city/town and not quite getting the atmosphere the people growing up has when bringing a program to a network station.
MISS U WLVI,WSBK. I can't even remember what the old name for channel 25.
Believe it or not, it's WXNE (meaning Christ in New England). They were owned by CBN for an estimated 10 years before giving operations to FOX in 1986. They officially became WFXT in 1987.
that was awesome for posting and sad!!!I choked up!!!I grew up in Boston and love all the old past tv stations and commercials,tv shows!!!!great job!!
I still hate Ed Ansin. Not only is he Anti-NBC, but he hyped up WLVI's news. If I were running WBZ, I would split WBZ and WSBK, make WSBK the CBS affiliate and sell WBZ to NBC-Universal because I think NBC would like that.
One irony (as seen in the final closing credits) was that Jack Hynes had previously been an anchor at the first WHDH - which occupied Channel 5 before then-owners the Boston Herald-Traveler lost its license in 1972.
This station didnt cease operations, it was bought out by Sunbeam Television, based out in South Florida. Sunbeam shut the separate station down to save money and moved all the news to its WHDH 7 studios in Boston.
You're right and wrong. WLVI is still active, but it's no longer in its own building. So in that aspect, WLVI is gone. It can be said for then UPN station WSBK. They had their site until merging with WBZ due to CBS and UPN(Paramount) merging.
If two stations agree to merge, or are brought together in a conglomerate, that's cool. Nobody other than Ed Ansin and Tribune really agreed. Plus, they have different networks. If WLVI gave the CW to WSBK, that's one thing.
we love these reporters and they will be missed, WHDH is a very good news cats however the handling of this sale is horrific, they should have bought the company and kept the same people just revampt the brodcast.
I agree with the commentary of Jack Hynes. He said it well. Sunbeam and Ed Ansin did not have to fire those employees. They could have just updated the newscast and keep them on board. NBC UNiversal buying WBZ would be an interesting event. Let's see what happens.
That won't happen, CBS Corp already owns it, why would they sell it to CBS to be another O&O, plus, WHDH is a ratings monster. It would be suicide for NBC to do that. I like WHDH for the most part, but killing off the WLVI newscast was pretty dumb.
Are you kidding, that old channel 56 newscast was not Ed Ansins style at all!!!! that would be a shame on sunbeam to have a low budget newscast like 56 use to have in boston. I know for a fact that NBC doesent care for Sunbeam. But it is unlikely the situation here in Miami would duplicate in Boston today.
Even though other stations outbid WSVN for the best programming, the station has far higher ratings than WSFL and WBFS and often beats the other network affiliates in ratings. In May of 2006, WSVN was the market's highest-rated English-language station from sign-on to sign-off. [1] WPLG has since surpassed WSVN as the number one English-language station in Miami, though WSVN has remained a strong second.
And Also: WSVN tends to run a lot of lower budget first run syndicated shows that other stations pass on. FOX supplies the station with a primetime lineup and plenty of weekend sports
very well said, burbank. I hate Ed Ansin's idea of hype in news, Scott Chapin's voice scares me, and I don't care at all of Chris Crane's music. IMO, Ansin, Chapin, and Crane smell like diarrhea.
What I hate about Sunbeam and WHDH is their preemption of daytime NBC shows for useless news items that are not worthy of interrupting network programming. Ie: A minor Accident on RTE 9, the Katrina Victims arriving in Cape Cod Air base, and other useless items. I am not surprised that NBC is not happy with Sunbeam.
There was a plan to buy WBZ but Group W asked them not too. They had been looking for a VHF station in Boston. They even planned on buying Channel 7 but that fell through too. This was back in the 80's
And let us not forget that WSVN was where Joel Cheatwood - the man singlehandedly responsible for the mid-90s "tabloidization" of local news - rose to power...he later moved to Chicago's WMAQ (an O&O mind, you) and alienated longtime viewers of their 10 PM news w/his disastrous 1997 hiring of Jerry Springer as a commentator that not only drew a huge backlash, but resulted in the eventual departure of longtime anchors Carol Marin and Ron Magers.
What WHDH calls a newscast isn't a newscast at all. It's half an hour of fluff, flash and cheesy alliterative slogans under the guise of "news". What they did to a classy, real newscast like 56's is nothing but a travesty.
I'll tell you tom, You ain't the only one that hates Sunbeam with passion. I still can't believe WHDH has to make WLVI viewers sit through Chris Crane, Ed ANsin, and SCOTT CHAPIN. All three of whom I Hate. The biggest relief Boston needs is for CBS to sell WBZ to NBC-Universal, and make WHDH NO Network at all. Complete independent. I would suppose then WSBK would be a CBS station.
I feel your pain. However, I hope WSBK and WBZ get bought by NBC one day. I've been fantasizing that it became reality. Maybe one day it will be. Though the graphics and music of 7NEWS make me jump, it hurts that LVI went through this. One thing I'll miss is Tom Evans legendary voice signing off for this station.
Oh Yeah? Well you should actually be ashamed to have WSVN for your Fox affiliate. That station constantly pre-empts regular programming. That's why I hate WSVN AND Sunbeam. I've never been to Boston in two years, but I'm willing to bet the WLVI is constantly pre-mepted too.
Fox really leaves nothing to pre-empt during the day, the reason that Sunbeam bought WHDH is because NBC did not renew their affiliation agreement with WSVN in 1988, and to get back at them, he bought the 7 station in his hometown of Boston which had just renewed a long NBC contract and was for sale. Lucky for him it was a 7 and he could brand it identical to his own WSVN.
Oh.. mistake there... See, WBZ Radio & TV -Group W, Westinghouse- first got into an affiliation deal with CBS for their entire chain of stations... Then, not much later CBS would wind up being bought by Group W... while taking on CBS' corporate identity. I remember the Sunbeamed-7 as a CBS affiliate before being forced to drop it. It had the choice of NBC or Fox. I was watching this from Worcester County at the time. I was in the viewing area.
I miss the good ol days...
