I can't believe this clip stops, right at the pay-off to the whole scene! What was the point? You only had to let it play for about another 2 minutes or so??
One of Nicholson's finest hours. The moments where he writes to the boy are just so, so good. People easily put Nicholson in a box as an actor, but the man is amazingly talented. His skill as an artist is matched by few.
@Soundnous i suffered in silence with a learning disabiity to get through college and am now considering pursuit of a career as an actuary like the character nicholson played and this movie scares the shit out of me because actuaries make good money but not outstanding, have great job security, and basically live a safe, comfortable life, but what difference can a person make who is dedicated to neither extreme achievement nor selfless servitude like mother theresa? makes me wanna joinPeaceCorp
@flanker2020 It's not about "what difference has my life made to anyone?" like he talk about. Schmidt's problem is that his life made no difference to HIMSELF. This guy had no hobbies, probably never read a book for liesure, and never did anything with his wife.
Some men become "captains of industry" and never see their kids. Some men have mediocre jobs and lots of fun when they're home, and enjoy retirement.
This movie has deep, but hidden Buddhist messages. Buddha said many times that our lives are like the endless waves on the oceans, they come and go, come and go unendlingly. Buddha and his message to the world was "Compassion to all beings? "The thought manifest as the word, the word manifests as the deed, the deed hardens into character. So, watch the thought carefully, and let it spring from love for all beings"
@lenavanheusden No, it isnt the last scene! In the last scene he gets a letter back of that kid:) You have to type: about schmidt Ndugu's letter, and then the first! really touching scene..
Except for the shameless and crass advertising (e,g "heck, a degree from Drake ought to be worth something!") this movie was a masterpiece, with somber introspect offset by funny moments.
Solitary Man with Michael Douglas can easily compare to this movie, simply because it is also about the pains of growing old and alone and coming to the realization that you really have not done much in life to be proud of.
@xyPERSON I haven't seen Solitary Man; I've only seen the trailer. It just seems too upbeat and commercialized compared with the somber "About Schmidt".
@xyPERSON ok, I will take your word for it and not go by the trailer. After I see "The American" I will see Solitary Man. Maybe in a larger context this movie really is profound.
I guess if a trailer composed of cherry-picked funny scenes from About Schmidt were made it would also seem shallow.
You should have played the video a bit longer, the point the final reading was trying to make is he did make a difference in someone's life, the little boy that he faithfully was sending money to in another country so the little boy could get an education and live a more fruitfull life. This ending clip meant nothing if you didn't bother to show the most important part. The part that was left out was Jack reading a letter he received from the little boy.
@GratefulDogZX mate, if there's one lesson this lesson can teach us is that it's never too late to start making some kind of difference to the world. "Ndugu's letter" will have already come if you start giving of yourself to others who truly need you.
Have to admit I did find it depressing. Especially the part where he says.. "When I'm dead, and everyone i know is dead, it will be like I never existed." Very real for sure. I think many of us feel that way.
Thats a really stupid comment. But, I could tell you were from the Uk before even lookin at your profile. You guys can't event insult someone without it sounding gay!
I don`t know why when they mention greatest actors DeNiro and Brando always come up at #1. Those 2 fools can`t even hold a candle to Nicholson. Jack is the greatest, period. Nobodys even in the same universe never mind the same room as that guy.
a little embarassed to say I flat out misunderstood this movie on the first watching. if you watch the movie as a comedy, there's no doubt it's hilarious at times, but the movie is actually about existentialism. this closing scene basically summarizes/confirms that idea. great movie, very underrated.
Agreed paxtonfettel2. The problem is... it's one of those movies that's not for everyone. Everyone in my family claims it is a "weird" movie, and they didn't like it, but it is just dark and more real than they were expecting. "Real" is definitely a rule breaker for your average movie... especially one that is disguised as a comedy.
Thanks for this clip. I was watching the movie last night, but missed the ending 'cus i fell asleep...not because it was a bad movie, but it was on so damn late.- l think its a great movie...and i hope next time it willl be on telly it will be in the evening instead of night, 'cus l would love to see it again!... l'm an older guy now (45) and now the movie means more to me than it did when l first saw it.. - Jack is btw great in this role!
I'm the same... This movie moves me like know other. I am single 32 and would love to have a family oneday. Everyone I advise to watch this movie says it "boring."They truly missed the point of the entire film...Except ONE of my movie fanatical friends who is also single and adopted...The end of film makes him all teary eyed like myself everytime I watch it. This is a "mans"movie.. one of the deepest movies I've ever come across which questions the meaning of life in such an honest way. *****
..."hope things are fine with you"... this is the driest, darkest comedy ever made... i dont think that most people realize how cynical the humor of the film is.
One of the many things I love about this movie is that it--in a sense--occurs post-mortum. Schmidt says it best himself. "Soon I will be dead." He says, to paraphrase, Maybe I'll die in twenty years, maybe tomorrow. It doesn't matter. But in the end love breaks through the resignation for just a moment.
I don't think Nicholson was robbed at all. While this is my favorite movie - by far - I think Adrien Brody was absolutely amazing in The Pianist and deserved that Oscar just as much. Nicholson was amazing in this movie and deserved and Oscar, but so did Brody.
what about the most memorable performance from that year, the one that would go down in the record books as one of the great performances and one of the greatest movie characters of all time, I think that guy has a righful claim to that Oscar. Brody won for two simple reasons, Jack and that guy split the votes, and the pianist was a better movies than theirs.
best actor ever, the shining best horror ever. anger management the best comedy, the contrast of this mans ability is astounding. about shmidt... ''WOW'' its like living a entire lifetime in the course of 1 film.
This is the saddest ending ever, Nicholson's tears seem real. The way his selfishness is brought down to earth with a great thud as he reads this boy's genuine open and honest words for the first time, it is very moving. To be included in Ndugu's picture, to be in his thoughts and the fact that Schmidt is accepted regardless....
This is one of the most moving films I've ever seen. As a 21 year old guy, it's sort of engrained in us not to cry. To not think about life like this. To value money and booze and women. But, life is deeper than that. I can't help but cry when I see this. A testiment to why Jack is my favorite actor. Truly a life-changing film.
