@loso0008 Your words, your words alone rings a tune, its called BEING RACIST,POOR you say,its a country that may be behind but its peaceful and beautiful, you still must be living in that small mind of yours.
just because a country is poor does't mean it can't beautiful in other ways....I think that's what they are talking about. I've been there before too, and it's still poor and for the most parts it's still undevelope, but it is beautiful in the sense of culture and spirit.
When the French take over almost 100 years ago they dont even care about developed the Lao country and help the laos peoples with education. Every country they want to take everything from Laos and never want to help or support Laos peoples. Please look at the history.
@loso0008 Please compare Lao country to other country. Yes, Lao is poor. But remember our country have been destoryed by the French, Thais, Vientnam and Burma many century. I believe we are slowly growing and will get better.
Please have more compassion and be kind to yourself.
No matter what peoples say bad thing about Lao. I don care, because i love my peoples and our ancestor had been suffering so much. We should supports each other no matter what.
Living in poverty and living with very little resourse though have enough food etc....one has to distinguish....
Yes, quite complex isn't it. I didn't see any outright Communist influence, besides some flags hanging outside on buildings & houses. what does that mean? for me nothing. Laos is also Buddhist and the peaceful relaxed nature of the people, I saw that in character. Americans cry about Communism and yet most people in the world do NOT trust Americans anymore I trusted Laotians
Hi there friend, I do see your point. To me, however one chooses to live one life is totally up to that person. As long as there is a questioning on why am i doing this or why am i doing that. This asking of why is what is lacking iin the thought process of lao people. And its very much the same with the way they practice buddhism.
So the question is " Why do we lack this reflective or questioning habit ". In my opinion, We have not had systems where questioning and reflecting are encouraged, or where they force us to question and reflect. It is sad that until today, i dont believe the communist see this and urgently try to do something about it.
That kind of questioning and reflection is what's missing or not stressed in laotian mental habits. This habit of not asking and reflecting, I believe, is not some recent traits that lao ppl just acquire. They have been with us for a long time, way before the communist take over. The communist goverment is just another hindrance, not the sole factor that prevents laos and its ppl from waking up from mental and physical growth.
But before one can truely learn or truely grow, there must be this kind of thinking where one starts to ask questions such as: why, what, when, where, how. For examples: one might ask: how am i going to live this life ; what am i trying to achieve in this life; what kind of a nation do we want to have; what is its goals. Why r we poor. U get the idea. I think this is the beginning of clarity, purpose, and direction, beginning of true learning & growth
I want to be clear from the outset that I'm here to share my thoughts and insights. Not with the intention to sound " I'm right you're wrong " kind of thought.
Agree that lacking of education could cause one to not think critically/analytically. I think we need to be clear on what education is. For many laotions it means academic learning, going through schools. To me, learning comes from all sorts of ways, i.e life experiences, daily activities. U name it.
Regarding your comment -- "Laotian completely do not think about corruptness in the government/country..."
As a Laotian..heck as a human being who would not think about it? The question is WOULD ANYONE DARE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT? The answer to that is NO! The communist government would come down so hard on anyone that speaks out...whether it's against corruption or for freedom and democracy! For example in China, Tianamen Square in 1989..where the student rally for democracy was crushed!
Lack of education is NOT "caused by poverty." Poverty is the direct consequence of lack of resources and government programs to help those less fortunate. The government failing to provide education and training and funding programs for the people. It all rolls up to the communist idealogy! That is the root cause! But then again...look how far China has progressed the last decade...and they're a communist state!
Not sure if they knew why they took power; If they saw the causes that held the country from being a better country; If they understood the causes and took the necessarry steps to correct the problems. I care about laos cuz i'm lao. In my view, I will consider Laos to be a rich country if we can turn most of its citizens into a bunch of people that are capable of using the brains and able to think for themselfs even if we dont have a single car or a big highrise
there is a very slow development both in terms mental and physical developments. That is why there is a huge gap between the rich elites and majority poors. These conditions will not change anytime soon. At the present moment i really cant see the agents of change. There is very little sources of info to change the thinking pattern w/in the country. The communist leadership? well they have been in power for over 30 years. You assess their performance on your own.
laos held many fond memories for me. the people i met were really hospitable and generous. a lively bunch of people. but those were the college students. i haven't been around to see the rest of laos but the people i met were mostly great.
i commend you for your good-heartedness for giving your time and sharing your knowledge with lao ppl. Laotians certainly are very nice. However, behind this niceness, I believe, there is a huge lacking in analytical and crittical thinking. This lacking is present in almost every aspect of their life. 1 thing i like about the west is that critical thinking is the foundation on which their thought process is based. The culture of not using their brain is the main reason why
i agree completely with what you're saying. i actually think it's the simple-mindedness of laotians. in a third-world country, how complicated can one get? people lead simple lives. which is good but the simple-mindedness and this huge lack of thinking is the reason why laos is not going to progress very much as a country. how sad.
To an extent I agree with your comments. To add, I would attribute the lack of or deficiencies in analytical/critical thinking may be due to the lack of education!
That's the point of communism correct? Keep everyone simple minded, living the peasant life..while those in power can maintain control!
agreed! which is also why there's no macdonalds in laos:p hah just had to say that. as we go back, the lack of education is caused by the poverty and communism. and how the laotions completely do not think about corruptedness in the government/country and completely support the idea of communism without actually knowing what it is, if that makes sense.
Laos(ສູນປົ້ນແລ້ວປີ້ງລາວ;ສປປລ) is exactly like it was 33 years ago and it's exactly like it will be 100 years from now(2009)under the Popot lao regime .Times passes and Laos stays exactly the same
I have so much to say about laos. Thats because I care about it. Many laotians i know dont seem to care about their motherland. I believe far too many ppl, both inside and outside of the country, dont pay attention to the current state of the country and the direction it is heading in the future. The main reason for this is the fact that most r highly uneducated. They dont even know where their own life is heading, let alone caring about where the country is going.
i never knew about those people! i went to laos to teach college students english. they were really patriotic! but agreed, lots of them has no idea where they're going in the future.
