Here's a simple reason why humans can learn to recognize their reflection:

When someone speaks, you learn how their mouth moves by matching mouth movements to sounds of words. So, you develop that good enough to the point where you can look at a mirror, say something, and see the reflection of your mouth. Also, you're unable to hear the sound of your reflection.

I once showed my cat himself on the screen using a webcam. To my surprise he went looking behind my laptop to see if that other cat was really there. He didn't seem too surprised when he found out it wasn't, he just sat back on my lap and ignored everything on the screen.

I also sometimes make him move towards a mirror. He always starts touching the mirror even though we aren't that close yet. Would this mean he knows the mirror is a solid object, which he can't fall through?
