Why? Because it only applied to CIVIL marriage, not religious marriage.
It's the same with gay marriage. It will be legal for gay CIVIL marriage. Churches can still discriminate as much as they want to, since they are private organizations.

Kudos to Rabbi Levin for helping finish Hitler's work and actively promoting prejudice, discrimination and hatred. And kudos to every non-white person who supports Prop 8 for being living, breathing insults to the Civil Rights movement and all that MLK stood for.
That people who know, often firsthand, the harm that prejudice and discrimination causes, it's shameful that they're so quick to turn on another historically oppressed minority group. Levin spits on the name of every Holocaust victim.

There is no reason, at all, to have a "religious" reason to support Prop 8, when there's supposed to not only be a separation of church and state, but the decency to understand that one cannot force the religious beliefs of one group onto another.

I 'get' that whether someone may disagree with it or not,many people will continue to lend support for what they personally feel is appropriate.Personally, I'm a Christian, not homophobic and think very little either way about the topic of gay marriage. I consider myself generally neutral on the subject.What I do understand, though, is the REALITY of the situation and the reality is religious beliefs are inextricably tied to a great many people's support for Prop 8.

Yes. A great many people are unable to intellectually rationalize the fact that they cannot use their own personal religious beliefs to ban the rights of someone who does not share those beliefs.
I'm Christian. My church supports gay marriage. Isn't it silly that my denomination, in America, isn't allowed to exercise OUR Freedom of Religion because someone else has an "issue" with it? Heck, Rabbi Levin might as well try to ban non-Jews from eating pork. It's THAT absurd. We need Equal Rights.

Gay marriages happen in those churches that allow it all over America all the time! You will never be able to stop them! It does not matter if the govt recognizes them. they will continue and you cannot stop them as we have freedom of religion in this country. If marriage is primarily a religious institution then they are religious marriages and you are completely helpless to stop people from following their beliefs. You do not get a say in others peoples religions.

All religions can STILL decide who they want to marry... they have ALWAYS had this right. Even when the Supreme Court said that laws banning inter-racial marriage were illegal, that didn't mean that churches had to marry anyone who asked them too.
Why? Because it only applied to CIVIL marriage, not religious marriage.
It's the same with gay marriage. It will be legal for gay CIVIL marriage. Churches can still discriminate as much as they want to, since they are private organizations.

Perhaps you misunderstand what I am saying. What I am saying is that you can go ahead and have CIVIL (government controlled) rights, such as tax exemption, hospital visits (denying those is bull), holding property jointly in your names, and so on. Government discrimination is wrong. When it comes to forcing churches to perform gay marriages or penalizing churches that won't (which has happened) that is then taking away MY right to free religion. You can have rights, but don't take away mine.

This is because it is an issue that republicans use for fundraising and let's face it they aren't going to outlaw gay marriage because they use the issue for fundraising.
