Florida's Xanadu, located in Kissimmee on Hwy 192, was actually one of three -- the other two were in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
Went in this place back around 1984. It closed in 1996 and they finally tore it down in Oct 2005 but left the main sign in the front, pictured in the video here. No idea why they didn't remove the sign. The original main sign was a cheap POS until they put in the new updated lighted version. I think it even rotated (wowee . . . big-time).
Although corny as hell, I always liked the fact Xanadu was there. It was an utterly pathetic tour but was a Kissimmee landmark nonetheless. But no more :(
This must depress you after awhile - Seeing how quickly we let history fade into memories - - - Some of these places I've seen - Some not. Maybe the old sayiing has some merit - You can't go home again. Thanks for the vids though. They're great. (If you ever get to NH - Go to Hudson and check out where Benson's Wild Animal Farm use to be.) If you ever go that way let me know - seanmbryans1157@aol.com
This makes me so sad. I remember seeing Xanadu when we drove by as a kid, I always wanted to see it. Little did I know, it was closed down. And soon after, demolished. It's such a shame that such an interesting and historical place was torn down...
@sapper6d "I went to the one in Wisconsin Dells when I was a kid. It's gone to I think"
The Xanadu home was the first of the two to be demolished. Although I'm not sure when the Dells location was torn down it was definitely before the Kissimmee location.
there's a really great website with wonderful info on all the old Florida parks and attractions. I highly recommend it for anyone who remembers these old places, or wants to see what was once here.
Wow! I'm so sad that the Xanadu house was gone! I was there with my husband in our honeymoom. I have sweet memories of it. How sad. Why it was demolished???
@Greenseaduck523 It quickly became outdated, people weren't interested in round houses, and it went out of business. After it closed down, people and homeless people would break in to vandalize. Plus, hurricanes and other whether conditions took a toll on what was left. In order to sell the land, they had to take down the house.
It's such a crime when things like this happen! Instead of spending all that money on demolishing our own history in the name of a limited view of economy, at least just bury the thing - properly. Then, at least, we can build on top of it and preserve it. Besides, from what I know of Florida, they could use the altitude as well.
All the years I drove right by that place I never went in. I saw when they tore it down and then wished I would've done it just once to say I'd been there.
After it closed that place sat for several years looking worse and worse. The owner(s) had it listed way too high I guess, and lets face it, that place was a real POS. The land is in a great location but I foresee another hotel or goofy-golf place ending up in that spot one day.
If this place were still around I'm sure you'd be instantly dried off the moment you went in ;) Then the Tires of the Future (TM) would expand into a car and take you for a cup of coffee.
Hey Adam, please check out - The Domestication of the Incredible LMNO Robot - by iamminot - a filmmaker that used to live in Orlando when he went to UCF - Ben Piety - this is one of my favorite short films - it features the building abandoned before it was torn down - The first time I visited that place they were showing Michael Jackson's thriller on a loop like it was the video of the future... (at that time it was...) I'm so old
Are there any blueprints left? :(

Shame on you, Florida! You have no respect for culture or history! This land will probably be turned into a gas station. Pathetic.
