@FRINGOLINGO It was a Runyon, the conn comet came in black plastic and Runyon orange plastic. I have both. I got to measure his mouthpiece here in L. A. after he retired from the Basie Band. Great sound and fantasic player.
Search for ... Marshall Royal The Midnight Sun Never Sets ... and have a listen to that video. It is from a BBC broadcast and of course Marshall plays it silky and smooth just like he's doing on "This Is All I Ask" which we all should know was a song written in 1963 by Gordon Jenkins and recorded for the first time by Tony Bennett. After him came many more ... most prominently Frank Sinatra.
Skipping the intro and getting to the meat of the song ...
@susufis....There is a brilliant recording of Marshall with Snooky Young called Marshall and Snooky's Album....it's out of print and features among others Ray Brown, Freddie Green, Ross Tompkins, etc....I have it if you'd like one....Take care....
I´m looking for some recordings I heard from Mr. Royal. He is playing, I believe, in a trio or quarted. Doy you have the name of any recordings of him, where he is not playing with an orquestra? He´s just fabulous. SANDRA.
@susufis I saw Marshall many times of course with the Count. Then I met him personally when he was in the Orchestra of the Fats Waller show in Paris, and I made him a curry in my home.. Each time he came to Paris, or France, we would meet, and he would introduce me to some of my Gods (Frank Foster, Al Grey, Freddie Green). I have a wonderful video of him walking down the Champs Elysées with my 5 year old daughter (now 34).
What a wonderful story hommefriday, memories are made of this, I remember this marvellous musician with the Basie band in the UK many years ago, and at that time I was told he rehearsed the band. Many of these musicians have now passed on but what a legacy they have left to us
I remember going to a Basie concert, and I realized that something in the sound was missing - Marshall had left the orchestra. I caught up with him playing in the Orchestra for the Fats Waller Show in Paris. We subsequently became friends and I the honour cooking a curry for him, visited his home, filmed him walking down the Champs Elysées hand in hand with my little daughter. Wonderful man and a unique musician. Thanks Marshall.

Looks like a Runyon mouthpiece and a silverplate Conn 6M/transitional alto sax.

What is his setup? There are a lot of quirky things on his sax.

Always brilliant, tender and delicate as a good lover. My ears and brain always satisfied with Marrshall´s special way of playing hix sax. SANDRA.
