how do you get a "ping" sound from a cymbal? some studio recordings of music have this really sharp sound as if hitting a cup of water, and the sound is really abrupt and doesn't have a drag.
the quarter note is the heartbeat of music or at least the unit measure of music notation.....it's that pulse we must establish/feel and nourish. there are many good notation/theory books. email me at 247drums at gmail dot com for tips on which ones to get. THANKS Sergio visit
Great advice, thanks so much! (I'm a drum beginner) ------ Everybody feeling entitled to diss people offering information/help should make better videos themselves instead of all this negative blah blah. In most cases, they couldn't do so, lacking the necessary skills/knowledge. Face it - if you ain't any better (technically, musically - as a person???), simply shut up.
I wouldnt recommend a B8, B8;s are horrible cymbals, and the ride pings for about 10 minutes. B8 Pros on the other hand ive found are worth three times the price you pay for them, and are a very nice beginner cymbal
Plain B8 are way better then B8 Pro. B8 pro is to thick and barley able to produce tone. But i do like the Ride bu the crashes and Highats are wya to thick
I'm a new drummer too. I got a very nice ddrum double bass set for Christmas with starter Cymbals. When I went to the nearest muysic store to buy good cymbals (1 hours away :D )I spent about $360-$400 on just a hi-hat, ride, two bass pedals, and a new snare head! Have to go back for the crashes later still! :O
An expert at one of the store told me that you will spend more money on cymbals then on the drumkit itself!
Its true, cymbals cost alot. My hats were 400 alone, and most of my cymbals were 400-600 each. Plus my bass pedals were 500, so you got a good price, even if theyre only starter cymbals and pedals
very true, but sets and even snare drums alone can get into the thousand dollar range. it gets expensive but the more you go along with your drumming, the more worth it it gets.
the cymbals you use in jazz are most often a lot different then the cymbals you use in common rock music, but you happen to be quite lucky, searching for a ride, because rides is, in my opinion, the only cymbal type that can (note that 'can' people, just so don't go nuts) be versatile enough to be used in both of those music genres.
(max 500 characters per post) The thing you need is a very large medium/thin ride, which mostly results in a VERY easy controllable sticking sound (from almost unable to cut through the wash of the cymbal to a heavy ride like stick sound) and medium/a lot wash. Check out the Zildjian K 24inch light ride... maybe the 24inch Armand medium ride to (mostly rock cymbal)... I would suggest the K...
But technique in turn gives better sound. If you want even better sound, you should learn good technique. Having good technique also gives you an advantage with speed and things of the sort.
sound is my only one priority!i do change techniques often and really do not care much about HOW do i get the sound i need? this is also how i teach my students.....
Wow I'm so glad I did not go to the Berkley school of Music, LOL, this was not how to play a ride cybal, it was more of what is a ride cymbal, lame

though not very usefull on a ride, you can also strike the cymbal over/on the edge from above to get a more crash like sound.
