theres no other option but to defend yourself. but think about, this guy is one of a small percentage of people who gets mauled by bears. its one thing to walk into bear territory. its another thing to walk into territory occupied by "mother" bears and her cubs. its not smart.

similarly, if you defended yourself from a shark attack while surfing - half of the people would say good job defending yourself and the other half would say the guy is a moron for surfing at shark infested beaches.

Run away from a bear? For animal rights activists they sure lack any basic understanding of a bear's capacity to run.. Running away and direct eye contact are signs of aggression towards them, slowly walking away works fine. Then again, these are black bears, it's a different ball game. Basic principles of animal physiology beats the activists yet again.
