Just finished the series about ten minutes ago...what a ride. And although the only other graphical novel I've ever read was "Watchmen" (before the movie came out), I'm definitely glad I've been introduced to this world (even if I am almost 40 years old - better late than never). My next read..."Incorruptible".
Cried my eyes out at the end of the final 2 issues. This was such a great series and I thought the end was perfect. Wish it could have kept going for a while longer. It's definitely one that can be read again though.
I just finished this series last night. I was so emotionally involved with some of the characters, when 355 and ampersand died and yorick went a little mad it felt as though it was real. Im a girl, so the whole romantic aspect of this series was satisfying. Yorick and 355's love for eachother was so painfully obvious.. I didnt like the ending, but I understand why it ended the way it did. Overall this series was amazing and I believe it is a must read whether you like comics or not. =)
I loved this series and if anyone has any suggestions for me for more graphic novels please bring um on. I just recently got divorced and got back into comics. Was raised on marvel. Throw some names at me it would be greatly appriciated!
Every human was still doomed to extinction anyway. You can only make clones of clones for so long until cellular senescence begins to make it non-viable for reproduction. With only two sets of paternal chromosomes floating about in the whole population (Vlad and Yorick), inbreeding would soon result in the 'traditionally' reproduced population. It was actually a very dark ending disguised as a happy one if you think about it. It was a 'mindfuck'.
@Snyder29 Clone the women that survived the plague at the same age as all the men produced with each new generation of offspring. It would take a lot of coordination, effort and resources. You'll have to do it for a long time to get any appreciable level of genetic diversity, because instead of infusing new genetic material you’re going to have to wait for random mutations to slowly diverge different lineages apart until they’re different enough to start intermingling sexually again.
I hope that LOST ends as well as this series has. I'm so glad that they had this ending in mind cause I'm positive that the creators of LOST are just making shit up as they go.
I've just finished the series, with all it's ups and downs and hilarious moments. the entire story really pulled me in. Yorick evolving as a person through the years alongside Dr. Mann , 355 and the most important sidekick his monkey >:) and at the end...deserved a tear.
I agree with the Beth part but considering how far Yorick went, struggled, bled and for her to say that she wanted to break it off, I would've left her as well. Never saw Beth as a muffdiver though which kinda threw me off.
Wish we could've known 355's real name though.
However the part with Ampersand brought tears to my eyes. It's a powerful scene.
I feel the same, what ruined the ending for me was the fact that Beth and Yorick's relationship is so-easily thrown aside. After the dream in Australia and their reunion at the arch, it just seems like they were soul-mates. But then Beth tells Yorick what she was going to say in Issue 1, and he walks out on her...and then Beth hooks up with her sister?? It just didn't seem right, it really hollowed out the ending for me.
as great of a series this was i kinda felt torn when he didnt end up back together with beth it just seems like they build up to their eventual reunion and then all it takes is 1 thing to completely turn it around and then have him realize he cares about 355 more, i never saw her as a soulmate for yorrick i saw her almost like a mother to him, especially after that dream beth had it seemed they were destined for each other but apparently not
my favorite thing about the way brian and pia ended the book is that there are hundreds of stories the could have occured between the penultimate issue and the last. but once 355 died, as far as yorick was concerned there wasnt anytjing worth repeating. someone could still go all 'Young Indiana Jones' on this story. I hope that no one will though.
I was kinda disappointed. I heard the ending is really sad, so I closed the last TPB on page 49 with tears in my eyes, fearing Alter would ruin the happy end by killing BETH.
However, I have to say I wasn't stirred for some reason when the climax was all about 355. I guess that makes Yorick's "Moonlighting" reference all the more fitting.
In my opinion it had a stale aftertaste, and I feel this wasn't the grand finale this amazing graphic novel deserved.
I admire people capable of self-mockery. But never mind that...
Can you really imagine a world without men?? I mean, who's gonna open your pickle-jars and screw in your light bulbs, carry heavy stuff for you and *sheesh* say bye-bye to intense soccer-matches, too.
And when your biological clock hits 10 to 12, what then? HA!
I finished the series yesterday and I must say it was beautifully made. I loved the dialogue and the art was also good. I'm pretty satisfied with the ending, but I was sad to see 355 and Ampersand go. Overall, it's by far my favorite comic so far. As for the movie, i'm not sure on how I feel with Shia Labeouf as Yorick, it's a big role and i'm not sure if Shia is the right part, I'll wait and see.
finished y the last man yesterday and i thought it was the most amazing story ever. i cant name a comic which compares. As someone else said that it does not conclude the story on the whole global scale i agree that it could hav told more but i was totally happy and amazed with everything which did happen
When I think of the series in terms of the character development of the last man on Earth rather than emphasizing on the impact on society, I really loved the series, including the ending. Otherwise, my only discrepancies with the ending would probably be the lack of a, I don't know, global solution. I'd have to say it did seem like he trailed off a bit towards the end. Still, it was pretty enticing up until the 59th issue.
I think the playwright series wasn't that bad, it was obviously an outlet and some attitudes that he wanted to explore. It wasn't a necessary part of the story I agree, but more about exploring the society that is created by the death of all men.
For me the final three books (sorry idk the issue numbers) were not as drawing to me. The beginnng was very funny and had my favorite scene when Yorik talks to the musician at the Washington monument. Also dialogue wise the two best parts are when yorik asks if the amazons are attacking him and his mother says no worse republicans and when he talks about superman and he screams that hes the strongest man on earth from the top of the rock tower.
Great ending to a great series. Crazy to see everyone grown older at the end, but I'm glad they did that little fast forward thing to see how the world turned out. Tragedy makes for a good story, but I do wish 355 could have lived so they could be together. That's the romance lover in me talkin'.
I'm sorry, I think Shia LaBeouf is great, I'm so happy with the success he's had, but Shia LaBeouf is NOT Yorick, plain and simple. Chris Evans, maybe. Gyllenhaal, maybe. Not Shia. Again, sorry. My opinion.
That's what made Y The Last Man so great BKV left you guessing in the end ,like where did Yorick go after he made his escape out the window ? we'll never really know.
the only thing I regret since jumping back to comics since 2002(read some really bad comics that I decided to stop getting all comics I was following) is that I F-ING MISSED THIS COMIC SERIES!!!
after Batman RIP, FC and other series I'm getting I'm making it a priority to get the paperbacks but it still wont feel like the actual issues :(
Nice review guys. While I agree with the majority of what was said, I personally can't picture this series ending any other way. It was just perfect. The last scene with the straitjacket is one I'll never forget. Certainly one of the greats.
I just wanna know is the world of "Y" more or less back to normal as we know it? Since they have clones of Yorick and the other male, Vladimir around, are they having kids of their own?
the last issue was amazing, very cinematic but also very meaningful. I think it was the perfect ending to a perfect book that is on the same level as Sandman for being one of the Vertigo greats and a real launch to Brian K. Vaughns career. I think the part when Ampersand died was so sad and I did tear up a little. I think it had the perfect ending, if Yorick had committed suicide it would have been a terrible ending, it had to end with an escape and there was nothing wrong with ALAS.

Y: The Last Man is one of the best books I ever read. I picked up the first trade paperback when he was still writing Runaways. I liked that work and thought I should check out his other stuff. I was blown away and within the next week had purchased everything I could. While it's nice to know how it ends, I am sad that it's over.
I actually liked the theatre troop storyline. Yes they were probably the weakest issues in the series, but still quite good.
The last issue seemed a little jarring to me, good but rushed or something. I know the 60 issue thing was a an original goal of the book, but really the whole thing probably could have used like one more storyline, and a bit of decompression and gone to line 70/75 issues.
I havent read this so...I cant really say anything bout it and its probely to late to get it so Ill wait for reprints like I did w/ the Bendis/Maleev DD serise.
355s death was the most emotional experience for me. I've never expected a comic book could be so touching!

THE WALKING DEAD.

When Y The Last Man ended I needed a Non-Superhero line to replace it....
There is a REASON Frank Darabount is making a show of this. WALKING DEAD
