OMG!!! The memorizes are flooding back. I was a member of 88,89,90,91 marching band on the trumpet line. This is the year we took the championship from long time 4A champs Carson HS and beat out Garfield HS and thus beginning THE rivalry with Garfield. I remember the early morning rehearsals as well as late ones with Mr. Feliz. I'll never forget performing the Friday night games at Belmont. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THE VIDEO, IF YOU HAVE THE 1990 FINALS VIDEO THAT WOULD BE AWESOME TO SEE AGAIN.
I was in the Garfield band at that time. Your rendition of Malaguena is very good. Who would have taught that I would end up playing this piece (but in a different arrangement) in the UCLA band the following fall (please watch the video I posted of the UCLA halftime show of 1990)?
Indeed these were the golden times of high school bands in our area. Now the GHS band is just a fraction-in terms of size-of what it used to be in the 1980s.
WOW.....thank you for the post....i went to Garfield class 1993. but I lOVE watching this videos...when back on the days we had more BIG LATINO Marching Bands...up to even almost 300 members for Garfield in 1991...Belmont a huge band as well and NOW IS ALL GONE...no body is interested in music anymore :-( .....all those Golden Ages of our LAUSD competitions Are ALL GONE! Thanx about the video....great sound...i still see myself sitting and listening to you guys...great show.
89-90-91-92 and marched with all of them. Mr Feliz was a genius and a wonderful human being. I missed him so much.
I was a freshmen and was the only baritone sax player. We took the 4A Division banner by beating our rival Garfield with messed up yard lines by less than a point. Sweet, memorable moment.
Yes, the uniforms are priceless and very uncomfortable but awesome as it keeps you warm during those night games.
Thanks for posting this video. You really brought back some good memories. Those uniforms were so stiff and the hat always made my forehead itch! But other than that, it was neat to be part of an winning band and drum line. (I played in the pit.)
@peierple I can't find the Bell high school from 1989. Though I did see Garfield, and they weren't that bad. If only there was a better quality video of this show. Belmont was really really good then.
oh wow! I haven't seen this since..well, 1989! I remember all the lines taped to the ground were wrong! formations look alright considering that we used cones for field lines. lol...Do you have more from that year? or the following year? It's awesome reliving those memories.
yeah, those are some old school uniforms but they were pretty sharp. I didn't get this from Lopez, its my own copy of the tv airing. It was on KLCS I think.
uniforms from then were awesome. i may be old skool, but they are really snazzy, simple & neat. you got this from mrs. lopez huh. i remember her saying that the pit player was her sister or something. sweet rolls. i wish i could do that! killer drumline entrance and solo.(kudos to the band and colorguard)OMG?!? that's you Jaime?! no freaking way! you look good! i love these uniforms. i told that to mrs. lopez and she gave me this 'are you nuts' look. it was hilarious. neat formations good music.
