  • Robert Rodriguez Rocks!!!

  • everything is incidental except money and time. You need to make something that adheres to that but thats fine .... THINK POSITIVE

  • im going to film school to learn everything this video is very inspiring. i approve!

  • bravo bravo

  • Three people went to film school.

  • 1. "The sign above the door had neon letters that flashed red and green like fingers reaching out to grab anyone who was ever fascinated by colors".

    S.O.T.M.

  • "You got no money, you got no hose"

I wish that were hoes. God damn that quote would have been 600% more.

  • This guy reminds me of Tyler Durden

  • Teach me please

  • Concise and to the point.

    This guy's very word efficient.

  • He is so right. start doing. Keep it cheap. its not having the best camera or a 4000 dollar dolly folks its what you put in front of the camera and that knowledge only comes from doing. So get out there and fuck up. Cause you're gonna fuck up at first. But who cares because after a couple of screw ups you'll find your voice and that flood gate of ideas will open and you wont have enough time in the day to do what you want. Shit iI better live by my own words. pc out im gonna go fuck up for a bit

  • I think he nails the concept: Passion is more important than skill. That's why you don't have to be a trained composer to write haunting music, or a skilled director to make a moody heartfelt film. It's the fucking passion that conveys emotion - and thats the point of art.

  • this represents 90's MTV film style

  • I was this close to watching El Mariachi today on Crackle.

  • Man I love Robert! I totally agree with him and as an experienced director / cinematographer with 6 full length features under my belt, you can't go wrong if you are creative. I mean, my latest movies looks like studio movies but I did not spend a fraction of what studios spend to make a movie. I agree, Robert is the God father of indie movies!

  • @guguemichaels May I ask how much you paid. Also, did you have to do any type of legal paperwork. Waivers for actors, crew, etc?

If the actors and crew are volunteers, then do you need to do any paper work? The only thing I can find on this subject is either not very clear in explanation or is what you would do for a "hollywood" Style production.

    Thanks in Advance!

  • @jmikejapan Hi, at the beginning I started with music videos, that was the fastest way for me to learn how to tell a story. I was doing everything myself from script, to producing, to shooting to directing to editing. As time progressed, I started making a little name so people started volunteering their talent and time till I was able to pay.So I guess you can start at what you can do and yes make sure everybody signs something,no matter who they are, even your sister or girlfriend. Cheers!

  • @guguemichaels What if music written by mainstream artists inspires parts of your movie. How hard and how expensive is it to use in in your film? Is there kind of a 'Public domain" on some of the songs?

  • @guguemichaels how did you start working as a music video director? Were you working for someone or were you freelance?

  • @PkrBarMovie Hi bro, I started out making music videos for my artists. I had a record label 1997..then from there it grew. I shot my first movie in 1998..then people started noticing my video work and started hiring me to direct for them...that's really how I got started. I hope it helps...thanks brethren.I wish you much success...

  • @guguemichaels Thank you man! Last question (please!), how do you think I can find work directing music videos or commercials? I do not have any experience, but have worked as a cameraman and as an editor.

  • @PkrBarMovie Hi brother, it's not going to be easy but what you can do is find two artists in your city and shoot their music video for free...just to show what you can do. Then take those two music videos and shop for more Artists...use the free videos as your demo reel. Keep it low priced for now till you build up at least 5 clients then push up your price. If you do good job, your name should start floating around. Make sure you are good to your clients that's how you keep them loyal to you.

  • @guguemichaels I shot over 50 music videos, from that I was able to pay for my first movie. I spent $33k on my first movie and sold it to York for $40K and thats because I didn't know what the hell I was doing..LoL! My 2nd, I spent $20,000 and it looked 1000 times better. I sold it for $50k. My 3rd was a bit higher because I used some "B" actor. From then to now I' haven't spent less than $80,000 on any project...but I'm making my profit so it's worth the investment. I wish you the best bro

  • WHAT? Robert Rodriguez has been kidnapped????!!!

  • RR-The Godfather Of Indie-Filmmakers

  • i love this man

  • I wonder how many of those listening guys made a proper film after such a shocking speech.

  • @Leckow I disagree, he´s just saying you don´t have to spend a lot of money on filmmaking to become good. I think he´s right.

  • you got no money, you got no hoes!

  • how crass...

  • FUCK YEH! Check out a film clip i made for my friends duo. Cost zero dollars and took one day to shoot and edit. " Little Universe - Holiday House"

  • thats so crazy.. on Amazon you can buy a blu-ray of "El Mariachi" thats so laughable

I mean he made this movie for nothing.

  • "don't dream about being a film maker you are a film maker"

Wow. that inspires me to git off my butt and do something. instead of sitting around

saying i wish i could do that or be that. grab a camera and go shoot. we live in a

digital world and shooting is cheeper then ever.

  • And then he made spy kids ahahah

  • @Grijalva1852 and then he made sin city. and Machete. and planet terror

    I rest my case

  • @WaCoproductions true lol

  • How cool is that??

  • Read his book too! You'l find he started as a kid using his dad's really old video cam system. User your phone or get a Flip and get going. Free editors are on both the PC and Mac.

  • What;s that editing machine he picked up? Anyone know where I can get one in the UK? Thanks

  • Dont hate, he said for himself he didnt do well in film school. Robert is a genius

  • This man is my hero. I will follow his words to heart. With them, I know I can accomplish any and all goals I have. Thank you Robert Rodriguez.

  • Genius.

  • okay this my hundredth time seeing this and every time, genius comes to mind.

  • Wow, Genius. U invest so much, this guy is all about simple at best. "The money is a means to an end"....so true. Makes me want to quit art college and just go buy a camera and film!

  • @HANGER187 Ironically, Rodriquez went to UT.

  • @moviewizguy2 Really!? As a student? Never knew. Seems like his experience taught him better.

  • @HANGER187 Mhmmm. After a quick wiki search, I see that he didn't have high enough grades to get into the film school so I guess it doesn't really count. Haha. I'm currently going there right now and people say he visits there often so I'm excited.

  • @moviewizguy2 interesting, I am in Austin. My Martial Arts teacher has a family that owns a furniture store Robert frequently visits. Yeah, I didnt think Mr. Rodriquez went to UT. He said to not go to film school, otherwise u make films like everyone else. U should add me as a friend to network. PEACE.

  • @moviewizguy2 He was initially rejected but he was later admitted to film school after he submitted a short movie to his professor. He never graduated because El Mariachi and two sequels was his plan rather than graduate from film school then go work for someone pulling cables.

  • fucking brilliant that's all i can say

  • To beginners: LEARN THE TECHNICAL BASICS! These simple skills are what separate home video from professionals. Spend a few hours on wikipedia looking up these concepts: (in order of importance)

    EDITING.

    LIGHTING.

    FRAMING.

Also, do your homework. From now on, NEVER just watch a movie. LEARN from them by imagining what the camera is doing for each shot. "Special Features" on DVD are a blessing.

Look WHY movies good movies are good and bad movies are bad.

And screw what's popular. Be you.

  • I met him some years ago in Berlin film festival... he is a nice and very inspiring guy... what he says in this video is so true.

  • Great vid Loved it

  • Robert Rodriguez is our generation's ORSON WELLS he has inspired a WHOLE GENERATION OF FILMMAKERS to STOP ASPIRING START DOING!

  • I love how on all the YouTube videos concerning film, there isn't really that much arguing or bitching on the comment boards.

  • he's so right! the whole studio system/film school thing is a complete lie

  • It's amazing to me how much money Hollywood wastes on camera and lighting equipment when super stable images are boring and extra lighting is not naturalistic. Take the money you would have spent on all that stuff and rent a better camera. Then just use natural lighting and hand hold that shit as best you can. Otherwise you'll have nothing but a bunch of static and washed out digital images.

  • I agree with his little thing about camera stands and movies looking stiff. My first movie was shot completely in handheld and you could sense the energy. Then I went to a film class and shot another movie using a tripod stand. It looked too clean and personally I thought it was a bit boring. But that's what the teacher wanted and unfortunately I had to film it like that or else I would have gotten a bad grade.

  • Very cool. This one goes 8 minutes :) I read this originally in the back of his book, and he could've charged the cover price for just this in the appendix. Thanks to whomever posted it, and I don't know why it doesn't have more views.

  • Every positive comment posted about this video, I totally agree. He was straight to the point, not bull and very encouraging.

  • a TRUE FILM MAKER! LOVE IT!

  • hes a genious. I love his Films

  • they got too good of a stand.....seriously

  • I loved this literally. I started learning about how to become a better film maker.

If you wanna spend more than ten minutes on film with me. Help me out!! And ill do my best to help you.
