Nice sound. Check my videos of my DuoTone amps that are a tweed and a blackface Deluxe in one amp plus some more modsand tweaks. It takes 6v6s or 6L6s.Also check the Pure Tone page in Facebook for more info and pics. Thank you.
@PureToneAmps To be honest the next best thing to either a true vintage 65 Deluxe Reverb or 5e3 Tweed, is a 'Tone King' Imperial or Metropolitan... good enough for Mark Knopfler et al...
@58TweedDeluxe I'll check it in youtube. I believe you need 6L6 to get the Knophler sound. My DuoTone has chameleon versatility. Keep in mind that it is not just a copy of the tweed Deluxe, it has the best elements from the Deluxe, Pro and Twin. Add the Major-Minor switch choses from push pull output of 2 tubes option to a single ended (Champ) with half output and warmer sound. Finally the output character switch gets you to Twang, acoustic or the Warm option with rich low end.
Another over priced Fender...why is it that Fender, with it's massive buying power, doesn't compete with the smaller builders neither in price nor quality?...some people are obsessed with brand names just like they are with clothes and the fender corporation is cashing in.
I got a 59. I got a buddy with a 57 reissue. We AB'd them. He called me an hour later asking to buy my amp. . Having said that, its ok to own a 5e3 clone or reissue to take to a gig. However, do not kid yourselves, they are not close. Thats why the real ones go for 3 to 4 grand, not for collecting sake, but because they sound incredible. Sorry chaps.
lol what a lousy amp...sterile and proper no balls or soul that amp on 5 should be screaming and chasing you down the street...ahhh reissues craptastic
Wonderful demo. Great audio, riffs, and specificity regarding guitars and settings. I keep reading about the interplay between volume controls on these amps. Have you tried this, and if so, what kind of results do you get? And one more thing: in a future demo, can you demonstrate the difference when the guitar is at full volume vs. when the volume is rolled back. Thanks, again!
@STORYTASTIC same circuit: the famous 5E3 circuit. Same preamp tubes: 12AX7/12AY7 Same power tubes: 6V6 Same Tube rectifier: 5Y3
Can you tell me how that differs from the original?
The main difference is not the tubes or circuit but the speaker. And the speaker does have a large impact on tone. I believe the reissue uses a Jensen p12Q whereas the original used a C12Q -- or is it the other way around? Anyway, changing the speaker should help a lot.
@danakerman what he means is not that the model numbers and tube types are not the same. They are. But a vintage amp will have old tubes that underwent a whole different production process in the heyday of tubes. Jensen speakers today are produced in Italy and are supposed to sound very different. Components used on the board as well as transformers are also different.
@seicheberlin If anything, tube production today is more reliable and consistent than 40 years ago. I continue to believe that all the hype concerning vintage examples of the 5E3 is just that - hype. Often, our prejudice/nostalgia colors our perception, which is why blind tests are so useful. I continue to believe that the main issue here is the speaker. Swapping out the stock for a C12Q or C12R should help a lot, or an Eminence or vintage Jensen. The circuit design itself is solid.
@danakerman I didn't say "vintage is better". But without a doubt production methods now and then differ significantly. I don't know if tubes are more reliable today. There is no real need for good tubes, except the tone enthusiasts, so there is no real competition. Military Grade Tubes are not in production anymore. I've had two JJ5AR4 rect. tubes go bad and blowing fuses in my amp. As soon as I used an old tube (not even NOS), the problem was gone. The design of the circuit is solid, i agree.
lol...."my VT15 sounds just like it!" ....lol....maybe on YouTube....via some crappy speakers.....but, not in real life. Not by a mile! Tone is only half the issue when it comes to amps.....the way they react to touch is the other thing. Something that inexperienced players just don't understand. Trust me here folks....if you're wanting to become a better player get a RAW, basic tube amp. You'll sound like shit for a while....but you WILL improve in ways you just can't with ANYTHING else. IMHO
@WarBeer A totally clean solid state amp can do that as well, though even after much practice, it is solid state, so there's a limit to how much of that intangible sweetness you'll ever get, regardless of what your fingers do. But the VT amps aren't really as they claim to be. They say the 12AX7 is used in the "power amp circuit" unlike most hybrids, but really it's a driver stage. You're better off with a hybrid with a tube in front. But an all tube amp will give you what you give it.
@punkeratheart ....sure a clean solid state will make you improve as well. BUT a SS does not have the touch sensitivity that a tube does. Not yet anyways:)
@WarBeer So true. I'm a life-long musician, but have only been playing electric guitar for about a year and a half. After buying a good tube amp, and playing with it a bunch, yes, I sounded awful for a while, but the amp teaches like no other. Now I can't really even imagine playing through anything else.
@WarBeer You're right!!! The tubes sound more natural, and react more 'naturally' to picking dynamics and clean up with volume dips! But also don't forget the amps controls, I mean the sound and way it reacts to picking dynamics is a MAJOR part of what I look for in an amp, but besides that its gotta have 3 band EQ and a master volume for me to buy it
so true, when i first got my blues junior I really was unable to get sounds I liked outta it, and didn't know how to set the master/preamp volume in order to have warmer sounds...same thing for a bunch of effect pedals I bought in the last year, you must learn how to use these things before you succed in getting your favourite tone
@frenzexperiment I don't think he was talking about tone. Modeling amps cover up mistakes so it sounds like you are playing better. But with a tube amp you hear what you play. At first that seems like a bad thing, but it helps you get better and you learn from your mistakes.
@WarBeer Hopefully, this is only your humble opinion...
There's absolutely no link between getting a "better player" (what does "better" mean ?) and getting a "raw, basic tube amp". I think inexperienced players, as you call them, don't care about the amp they play...and I sometimes wish I was still like 'em. Some people can rock the shit out of a MG15...And that, "experienced players" can't understand. Always remember that the audience just don't care about what amp you're using...
@ChienAndalousia sure a descent player will sound good on anything. A simple tube amp doesn't mask your imperfections. This DOES force you to focus on your touch and tone more. It helps your articulation and makes you a cleaner player. Plain and simple. Most experience players know this. I've used MG-15 for teaching a lot. And yes, they work...but they're a VERY easy amp to play. And the road less challenged....is the road less gained. Not really "MY" opinion. Pretty much the consensus.
@ChienAndalousia I'd like to add...though this vid and discussion are about amps. My main mind-set here is more about purity. (effects) learning to play without them. NOT making "your tone" one that is masked over...is really the biggest thing. If you learn to play without them...and use them for "color"....you will develop faster. Same with the simple tube amp discussion. I'm not saying you can't get good another way. But it will make you hear things sooner and thus probably mature quicker.
I got the VT15 for Christmas and been tweaking the Tweed Setting. It's pretty damn close. And for the money and weight you can't beat it. I own 5 other guitar amps and they are all tube. The VT is an AWESOME buy.
Thank you for a good demonstration on how a Tweed deluxe actually sounds. Every clip on youtube is done through bad PC/camera mics that are clipping and shoud like shit.
thanks for posting this.. really awesome amp

ah you didn't specify what configuration it was.
what speaker are you using..? and what tubes are you using? namely the preamp tube in V1, is it a 12AX7 or a 12AY7.
and before youtube morons start replying, yes it is very important to know. the preamp tube in V1 position makes all the difference in the world.
