This Dr. Hook song is virtually unknown, but has always been my favorite. It played over the credits of an equally obscure Dustin Hoffman film, "Who is Harry Kellerman and why is he saying those terrible things about me?"
This song used to sort of scare me as a kid. I remember sometimes when the old man was in his cups and listening to this down in workshop and getting all maudlin. Took me a long time to get it, but I finally realized that he didn't want to be here - the city - but did it because it was his responsibility to me and my mom. That's a real man. A real father. Someone who will give up their dreams to do the right thing. He did finally get to escape the city though and is a much happier man for it.
In the 70's while I was in broadcasting their were MANY promotions and so on to determine if the meaning if this song was suicide or if the down droal Dennis used singing; "I'm going home" was taken as going home where he lived, out of that nasty old city or if it was Suicide going home.
Dennis has it going on,most people think Ray sings every thing, but Dennis was the man, hate to say it but the first time i went to jail the cop jerked me off the table i was danceing on and took my young ass to jail, thanks for the memories Dr Hook
1971 movie--Who Is Harry Kellerman And Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?---this was the first I'd heard Dr Hook...blew me away..have 4 albums and 3 cd's...good stuff...thanks for posting it here on Youtube...When this song plays in the movie Hoffman jumps off the top of a tall building and floats down to this song...very cool.
Such a great song when you're fed up with it all and feeling lonely and cold. Such brilliant songwriting and passionate singing. Gotta' love the guys. Thanks for posting.
When I started out in '67 I had the honor of sitting in with Dennis ever so often. Later on in a few years we crossed paths and were chatting when this song came up. He filled me in on the flith of this song.....................; If you listen to it real close see if you think it is about suicide(I'm going HOME) or just fed up and want to go back home..???????
The band played in a little club on the beach in Biloxi MS in the summer of 68 or 69. The place was called Chez Joys. Strobe light, black lights and lots of other things made that a summer to remember. They were playing lots of Hendrix, Donovan, Cream and Stones songs. Every time I hear Hurdy Gurdy man it reminds me of that place. The last night at the end of summer we sat in the middle of hwy 90 and burned one. They left the coast and several months later I shipped out to VN. Great band!
Lets get back to the music then!!! The harmonies of these two guys is/was amazing I can and won't ever tire of listening to the wonderful Dr Hook. Happy Days:)
er, the last comments seem to have lost their way. this is about music. and its good music, and hooks two main men and silversteins wit are one of those magical matches x
DAMN this still sounds so good! My friends gave me the vinyl LP in a frame for my birthday..I will ALWAYS be a Dr Hook fan! Thanks guys for giving us this important and relevant music!!
Top ten Dr.Hook songs. (my opinion only) 10.a couple more years 9.If I'd only come and gone 8.the things I didn't say 7.You aint got the right 6.the ballad of lucy jordan 5.queen of the silver dollar. 4.I can't touch the sun 3.carry me carrie 2.Last morning 1.Kiss it away.
@PunkRockPat Here's my top 10: 1. Knowing She’s There 2. Life Ain’t Easy 3. Years from Now 4. I Don’t Want to be Alone Tonight 5. In Over My Head 6. A Little Bit More 7. If Not You 8. When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman 9. Up From the Mountain 10. I Don’t Feel Much Like Smiling
Great video shots from Las Vegas. Here we see controlled demolitions of steel-framed buildings that, having been detonated by artfully placed exlosive charges, collapse neatly and nearly vertically while generating enormous signature plumes of dust and debris. Gee, haven't we seen this somewhere before? It sures reminds us of something they tell us was caused by airplanes, or, in the case of 42-story WTC-7, by nothing except a fire in the top stories. What coincidences these videos do suggest!
I met Dennis outside a Dr. Hook show in Nashville. I would love to see them all on tour. I'd go and bring all my friends. I love Dennis' delivery of Silverstien's creations. YES
Theres not a voice on this earth like the voice of Dennis Locorriere. He takes on the persona and sings like he's the guy in the song. He's an awesome talent and now as a solo performer is just as good. Shine Son is awesome
Hey Randapanda1614 - "last morning" began my journey home too it's pretty powerful when the heart is honest with itself. I still don't want to be here anymore either, but we are not alone and I'm leaving my exit up to something else cause I'm too scared about that . Maybe he was more courageous than me and I think I'm sure he heard you singin' to him and you put a smile on his face I got this hunch that whether we're here or departed everything's gonna be okay and we're gonna know it.
@PunkRockPat sounds like you're talking from experience. Did someone hurt you in the past? you know what you should do? KILL YOURSELF!!! You said it yourself you have no dreams ("I Know") whats the point in going on eh? If the only satisfaction you get in your life is insulting widows (very classy) what is the point???? Do the world a favour and die
@cnstructivecriticism Well that sure was constructive you stupid cunt, at least you are living up to your name. I wish I could Kill you instead that would make life better for everyone around you. obviously you and most other hermits on youtube can't handle the truth. Thats o.k keep on living in your fantasy closet and feel sorry for everyone-oh unless they make a mean comment of course then better talk 'em into suicide-Fuck you're a loser.
@PunkRockPat Wow!I mean really wow! That was the angriest comment ive ever seen i could really feel you're erectile dysfunction fuelled rage!Anyway i know i slipped out of my usual persona as suggested by my name but i felt it necessary for you, but thank you for highlighting my inconsistency. I love the way you are making me out to be the villain/loser whan you just told a widow it is her fault her husband killed himself. Haha you know im right jackass.
@cnstructivecriticism You're damn right wow, you stupid cunt. Go fuck yourself you pathetic piece of shit. Did I make you cry, picking on your "friend" the widow who you've never meant. Fuckin lame, I want to smash you in the fucking head with a bat. oooo my grammar is "atrocious" is it? Do you think that makes you sound smart saying atrocious, I mean seriously atrocious, Thats how you talk? Like anyone gives a fuck about grammar or spelling online you fuckin douchebag.
@PunkRockPat You are amazing! This is the most fun conversation i've ever had and yes i do care about grammar and spelling in fact YOU SPELT MET WRONG Hooray another score for cnstructivecriticism the purveyor of the english language. And yes, this is how i always talk it is much more fun than a vocabulary made up entirely of swear words (Oh and my name is deliberately spelt wrong). So seeing as you have decided to turn to swearing and mindless violence as a defense i gather i won this arguement.
Why don't you just take a break from it all, travel the world? It doesn't have to be a year or even half a year...go to Southern Guatemala (Panajachel, Antigua...), enjoy the local Mayans, the surroundings...these people have suffered so much that your own troubles diminish, and you'll appreciate your life back home so much more!
Cost: from $3-5 a day! For more comfort, better food, beer: Less than $10 a day!
I love this. I'll never gorget the first time I heard the song, watching the Dustin Hoffman character fall off a building in slow motion, smiling, in "Who is Harry Kellerman ...?". Thank you for posting!
