  • Brilliant ! Excellent work. Was pausing and working as I went and each time I had a problem, as if by magic, resuming the video provided the answer. Thanks very much. Just one thing: You change to the hand button really quickly - what's the trick ?

  • One can even use the History Brush..Same thing.

    Just saying.

  • I almost always use channels to remove my subject from the background.

  • This is a rather lovely tut on how to make some nice clean extractions. I've often used the Magic Wand, but lots of time because the color blends in, it's often difficult.

  • @tUBEwATCHER8900 exactement... i'd also used the magic wnd a lot, and never bothered using the extract. which left me in trouble with the areas having ruffled/unkempt hair.

  • "Down the trousers for example its a lot harder" that made me fall off my chair :P

  • @cartman4kenny THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID

  • @cartman4kenny well i guess ... "Find the whole and then fill it in" makes me laugh more :D

  • hello, thanx fot the turorial it was very helpful, but it was just half of what i needed to do. I have to transfer that extracted element from photoshop to corel draw program, the thing is that when transfered it always has white background, not just the element alone. Maybe anyone knows hot to transfer that element without background, just he element ? it would help a lot.

  • this in bbc,

  • im not seeing the extract filter either, is it an addon?

  • no its in -

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\Filters

Your drive may differ but rest will be the same

  • @mon3yhun9ry i dont have it either :(

  • @mon3yhun9ry nor cs5 :S

  • !! Professor !!

  • wow...

    this is amazing.

  • Gavin, you are the best! I've been frustrated by tutor "wannabees" who run through a video for their amusment and not for teaching. You sir, are a great tutor and you are easy to understand and you know your stuff.

Thank you for sharing your information and knowledge with those of us trying to learn some Photoshop tricks and shortcuts.

  • what botton we need to click if i want to copy back the edge dat over cut

  • Hi Gavin great video thank you for making the videos to help people like me

    Steve

  • 3:05.... yeah CTRL + Z goes one step back

    BUT!!!...

...if you press CTRL + ALT and move your mouse (also pressing the left button of course) over the green line...it works as a eraser :D

  • Nice tip. Thanks.

  • @PhotoGavin I've finally done an extraction much as you did, but now I can't figure out how to take that image and place it on another layer! ....I'm having a real problem understanding this, as soon as I click on any image it simply replaces the one before it and I don't understand why I have never had 2 images on my work area simultaneously to drag and drop and so on! I am confused about layers and manipulating one image to another..it's frustrating as hell!!!!

  • @microwawe

yeah and ctrl alt z goes back a few more steps

  • Gavin what PS are you using, i have PSCS4 Extended and i have no extract tool any where??? please help

  • I don't have that filter, I have adobe cs4 (its not portable)

  • Wonderful! Thanks.

  • Gavin, this is the best of your videos. It is really amazingly helpful.

  • I thank you for enlighten me.

  • One of the best tutorials i've watched :)

  • wow. thanks a lot man! I didn't know too much about what you could do with that filter! This definitely helps a lot!!

  • i dont have it on he filter. i got the cs4 portable from torrents. wtf

  • Most of these methods involve a photo conveniently taken in front of a solid seamless background. That's all pretty easy.

The difficult part is removing from a real photo.

  • i completely agree i can't find extract and real life photos with busy backgrounds are the ones i need help with.

  • Exactly, which is why the extraction tool is not worth anything.

  • THANK YOU! This is the best way to extract a person of a picture! Really brilliant tutorial!!!

  • you sound just like david mitchell from peep show - good video btw - thanks v.much for posting!

  • "down the trousers its a lot harder" lol *sorry

  • rofl

  • you can backward more step after control z click edit stepbackward

  • how do you get another background?

i want to put myself on new york

    how?

  • what extract tool.

my CS4 never came with a extract tool.

    wtf

  • its not a tool. its in the filter menu.

  • mine doesnt have it either, does cs4 not come with it???

  • Extract was removed as part of CS4 upgrade. It's still available on the CS4 install disc or downloadable from Adobe.

Do a Google search for CS4 Extract for more details.

  • @PhotoGavin CS3 has it, thank God ! and thank YOU PhotoGavin for the tutorial!

  • same with me

  • Just copy/paste from CS3 plugins filter file labeled "Extraction" (if you have it) to CS4. Open it up and it'll be there waiting for ya.

  • I think this is what I need for some of the old photos from the 1940 ts I am trying to restore for a friend. The wand picks the whole photo because of the color fade. Thank you for this video.

  • Brilliant video! Makes it all seem so easy!

  • he's wrong about the undo bit,

    you can go

    Edit>Step Backward

as many times as you like

  • Ctrl+Alt+Z to go back multiple steps!

  • u still get background pixels between hairs or hair gets cut off .

use Vertus Fluid Mask 3.0.10 Plug in

i think its a wonderful plug in and much more better then what photoshop offers you

  • Wonderful! Thank you sooooooooo much!

  • Very nice tutorial. 5/5

  • i dont have the extract button in the filter patch :S

  • Great video.

  • The extract filter was removed cause its useless. You could have done this job the exact same way with the pen tool in half the time and with no redos

  • awesome oO

    thx

  • thanks kolitu123 for you help.i get it

  • Comment removed

  • hey... do u know how to install adobe photoshop?

  • this is wrong place to ask that.. read the manual what comes with it when you purchase the product.

  • obviously...follow the installation?

  • I'm using CS4 Extended, and I have no extract filter...atleast I can't find it. Is it not part of CS4 or am I just a noob? Help please

  • @Lobizzor - the extract filter was apparently removed from CS4 for some crazy reason. However, it is available as a free download from Adobe's web site.

  • great job

  • Thank you so much ! U the best!

  • This will really help me out...I always used the magic wand and magnetic lasso for these tasks, but this seems so much easier! Thanks!

  • Sometimes Magic Wand is better, sometimes Extract is best. It all depends on the image. Hopefully you now have the skills to choose the right tool for the job.

  • You're welcome. Hair is a bit of a nightmare to extract. Next time make your son wear a hat ;-)
