  • The Cult will never perform the same again as it did with Preston

  • Check out the body-bashing, chicken-dancing, checked-shirt flat-tops at 1:17. Pure 80s. Prolly went from this straight to a Spear Of Destiny gig!

  • what year is it?

  • Look what happens to Ian in between his Native American and Pirate phases. It's like Michael Jackson and My Little Pony had a baby and Insane Clown Posse came out.

  • HOLY CHRIST! this is literallty one of my favorite clips in all of history ever. i got it from a friend in about 91 on a vhs with all sorts of other stuff. and ive seen alot of people upload on here. this is about 20x clearer than any other version i have ever seen. this is beautiful! i would love a copy of this whole performance and the southern death cult on the tube as well.

  • CULT - amazing!

  • Increible!!

  • That man's voice is PERFECT

  • replay button has been raped

  • Didn't quite catch the name of this song...

  • this song has spirit!

  • interesting...just realized they took a lot of imagery from Killing Joke--down to the big hollow body guitar

  • I have hit replay over and over...I think I am having a serious desire to go back to this time in life - great post -I miss the 80's and the music revolution bands like this brought about. I loved this band the most around this time and with the album LOVE.

  • Are U that kind of a boy who makes the girls screaming cos you don`t use a Anti dandruff agent?!

  • I love this

  • This is so good.

  • This is such a good song for a 20 minute jam its giving me a chubby just thinkin about it....would you allow me to send a video response of me n my mates doin this?

  • they didnt decide to go "mainstream", they were grafters on the live circuit, and with the usual crap in the 80's- this lot shone through, love u ian astbury !!

  • Brings back memories. My favourite S/D/C song.

  • reminds me of when i saw them circa 1986, there was a fight in the pit between the skins and the metalheads. good times

  • it's videos like this that make me wish I were alive back then.

    i love the cult(:

  • Ian has such a great stage presence.

  • Astbury doesn't sound too good...he looks cool though !!

  • nervous in the beggining then he was ok for me

  • astbury spoils it -because he was too nervous- duffy is cool as fuck

  • This is my favorite video on you tube right now. The Cult fucking rocks! I could literally watch this over and over and over. What a great performance of this song. Really stirs the blood.

  • What a treat ! The Tube what a great way to start the weekend. Still sounds great today.

  • Perfect great and terrific? Is that enuf?

  • i love you¡¡¡¡¡¡ master Ian Astbury

  • Gretsch Power!

  • The Tube was good TV. People dancing in the audience, cutting edge bands every week. There is nothing like this anymore.

  • @JEREMYGOODBAND if it wasn't for The Tube (and Old Grey and Peely) none of these bands would even exist - that's all we had. And I wish we still had them

  • excellent video, ian has one of the best rock voices ever.

  • so so good do not leave the studio now,saw them at royal testicle hall can not say how bad and sad it was.shed some flesh and be honest ian

  • Billy Duffy...Your cool as fuck dude!

    Indoorsun.

  • first time i saw the Cult they were support to killing joke @ the leadmill, sheffield frigging brilliant . i remember the neighbours complaining because i played them to loud . Play dead then supported them the year after, another good goth group of the eighties.

  • this is the 80es yeahh!! :D <3

  • God I remember watching this before I hit the pub! Class!

  • Jamie looks happy as h*((. Must have been taking some good stuff that night LOL! Ian is too serious and yeah he forgot the lyrics. Love the two bopsie twins with the teased died hair and the tall dude with the mohawk in the crowd. Gotta to have loved the early '80s.

  • I think Jamie was kind of known for being the 'sober' member of the group. It's not surprising that he's an advertising executive at a telecom these days. He managed to survive the 80s, I guess.

  • wot an intro thumbs up great song

  • Spirit walker spirit walker spirit spirit spirit walker waaow spirit walker spirit walker spirit spirit spirit walker

  • i love this song and the cult, but Ian butchered this song in this performance. He doesn't even make an attempt to sing the correct lyrics

  • 2.24 I did this dance for almost a mile when igot caught out needing the toilet !

  • 2.04 The look on Ians face when he can`t remember the lyrics. I still love this performance.

  • @boxxichampion he didn't forget they lyrics in this video...you're thinkin' of the live at the lyceum video...hahaha did you even watch this..hahaha

  • Aha, haa. Aha ,aaa.Aha ,aha.Aha, aaa. Let it be beautiful when i sing the last song. I will give you even my body Spiritwalker.Let all the children kiss the sun before they sing their last song.I will give you even my body Spiritwalker.

  • Aaa aaa aaa. Aaa aaa aaa.

  • Spiritwalker Spiritwalker Spiritwalker. Let all the children kiss the sun before they sing their last song. Let allm the children kiss the sun before they sing their last song. I will have the whole world to make music with me.

  • Spiritwalker Spiritwalker. Aaa aaa aaa. Spiritwalker Spiritwalker Spiritwalker Spiritwalker. Aaa aaa aaa.

  • Starwalker Starwalker Spiritwalker Spiritwalker Windwalker. Aaa aaa aaa. Starwalker Starwalker Windwalker Windwalker Windwalker. Aaa aaa aaa

  • Spirit, spirit , spirit, spirit. Aaa aaa aaa. Spirit spirit spirit spirit. Aaa aaa aaa. Spirit spirit spirit spirit aaa aaa aaa

  • He did forget the lyrics. I`m not knocking him . I`ve posted the lyrics for you to cross reference

  • great song but his vocals sound really off key throughout this

  • I love this song! I can't wait to see them on Saturday at the Club Nokia.

  • i've heard the Pre-Rubin mix of Electric (The Peace Album), and while I think over all, it is better then Rubin's Electric, I think if it would have been released back in the 80s, it wouldn't have been as successful. Like it or not, Rubin's Electric brought the Cult out of the UK and to the world.

  • & back with a phoney American accent. For a Northener it was sadly incredible that he could be so fickle.

  • Fuckin great song/performance from before they decided to be more accessible.

  • I ve never tired hear this song. I ve got one great version live at pompano beach in my viideos

  • im gonna see them this oct :D

  • nice astbury suit :D

  • It's perfect and raw! This was what made early Cult great. Oh and by the way, they're still great. CFFC!

  • hey tommy, can you hear me, this is Jan (Friday) 13th 1984, A slow slippery slide down to revolution and then rick ruben ruined it all. Oh the yankie dollar must have felt good. And its called progress

  • I like all Cult even Electric and Sonic Temple and the 90's. But the early stuff going back to Southern Death Cult was awesome. They were YEARS ahead of their time. I mean who was doing what they were doing in '83 and '84 with their overall flare, songs about Native American heritage (from a Brit band no doubt!), and Duffy's guitar style and sound focusing on delay?

  • Oh what is wrong about Americans and money! LOL! I am half joking when I write that as I am American and still think over here it's the closest thing to the land of opportunity unless the global socialists take over the world (their winning the war unfortunately right now but that might change).

Anyway screw the politics! Rubin did not ruin the Cult. The Cult's incarnations are great from Death Cult to Born into This. I respect their diversity in musical styles and overall artistry.

  • I have complaints. Billy's White Falcon guitar doesn't sound PERFECT enough..

    I need more perfect..

  • the start of the demise unfortunately . this was their finest moment as The Cult .

  • jees.. what did ian do with his face!!

damn.. how old is this vid.. '84..? '85..?

  • Pretty sure it's '84.

Ian's face still looks beautiful... though I prefer the Love-Electric looks better

  • shit

  • They have so much style!

  • Listening to this, I just think how similar they are with The Gun Club. Both great bands around the same time.

  • grandes carajoooooooooooooooooo

  • saw em at Aylesbury civic hall 85 -kin great

    black elvis2000 supported

  • saw Bauhaus there in '83 - kick-ass brilliant

  • PLUS REVERB dont FORGET THE REVERB ohhh and a GOOD PICKING HAND a GOOD PICKING HAND

  • i wonder what effect does it takes to reach this guitar sound - chorus only?

  • Yes, and a hollow body guitar played out of marshall tube amp :)

  • ;) that's right. Hollow body, preferably a Gretsch :)

  • This is what it was all about back in the day. All this vampire crap was just that....crap. If you went about saying you wanted to be a vampire then that was enough to get you marginalised. I t was more sort of tribal.

  • Ian, te pareces a la "loka" de la Marilyn Manson con ese Make-up ! Cute..though :)

    I love your Music.

  • Best live song....the single was crap in comparison

  • The best song, from the band

  • Just awesome !!!!

  • would you look at that makeup, those clothes, those hairdos and those feathers...boy...the sign of times, indeed...

  • Yeah, it had some fucking life in it, a bit of individuality.

  • Fuck me ,this takes me back, superb!!

  • If you like early Cult, check out tracks like "Spiritwalker" & "Horse Nation" & "Peacedog"

Have a wonder about what the songs refer to in context of the musical and lyrical content.

    Cheers Guv, all the best

  • well done CGSdog!...but one day take your heart to Wounded Knee, will also help you to understand the difference between good & great, good medicine and bad, we are forever in THEIR debt for what we stole

  • ok you comment is a month old, but i can't help but wonder what you were on ,mate?

  • ian ur a god god bless u mate for helping me to grow up and understand the diffrence between good and great music cheeers 4ever in ur debt

  • Wow, great to see again the Southern Death Cult, in their cold wave/punk/goth days. I like them as Rock band, but I must admit still having a thing for their early records.

  • Hey, Jamie and Billy were already part of the band, so this is NOT Southern Death Cult. Just The Cult. Also like the early days! Cheeeers.

  • Wow, great to see again the Southern Death Cult, in their cold wave/punk/goth days. I like them as Rock band, but I must admit still having a thing for their early records.

  • bravi i CULT. Vi amo!

  • complimenti a Ian per il look! grandi!!!!!

  • I love them and am going to see them at The Forum ( 22nd and 23rd of feb.)

Find me at the bar people - im buying!

  • Great song, remember watching it at my mates house with a couple of beers. Happy times.

  • best cult song ever...they sound AMAZING here

  • The Cult , U2 and the Cure shared alot of the same elements that can be heard here or what do ya think ?

Obviously The Cult had the most COHONES-sound in their music though. That powerful feeling in their music+their precence makes you easily hooked on it and addicted... Fan for life.

  • billy duffy ...theatre of hate ... give it a go troll ..excellent band

  • That shirt Jamie is wearing is crazy. I want one.

  • Billy and Ian get lots of props but listen to Jamie Stewart on bass. He was great!

  • I finally got to see them play live last year 21 years after I bought my first album of theirs.

Well worth the wait as they were amazing!

  • Was after this song that every Hard Rocker back then, knew was going to make this band their favorite band... Believe me....I did.....

  • Hmm... This must be early the Cult... sounds very post punk.

  • This was early (May??)1984, less than a year after Death Cult formed. The band actually dropped the "Death" from the name before the show, to become just The Cult. Certainly one of the best live bands at the time.

  • This a great song! No matter what they did it was always cool. This might be considered 80's new wave, but for me it was just the cult maximising the sound's of the time with what they were doing. They were so ahead of themselves.

  • Não ouvia isto desde 1987!VIVA OS CULT

  • I remember this - superb! Great band (despite Ian's ego)until this point.

  • wht an awesome fucking awesome song, i like alot the obscure The cult songs......... like this one.

  • this song is awesome

imo, the cult is one of the best rock band of history

  • looks a little like elvis of the 80's

  • i remember this from the tube show! went to see them in glasgow barrowlands what a gig?

  • Aguante The Cult!!!

  • thanx for posting.i was there.used to follow them.great days.

  • This Live Version sounds better than the Album version,Fucking top band.BRING BACK THE TUBE...

  • Love the early stuff.Amazing that people with such stupid hair could make good music.

  • good old slammin days . shame they went downhill

  • Ian looks and sounds freaking phenomenal. Thanks for sharing it!

  • HEY all you CULT fans did you know that Ians birthday is MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.Because Ido.

  • Big whoop fool-io...tell us CULT fans something we don't know!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The audience...

    Viva The Cult

  • this is the absolute best quality i have ever seen this clip in.

and though i am a SDcult fan far more than the cult, this has to be the coolest ian ever looked.i have always wanted a poster from this show.

  • Ian astbury is one of the best vocalists in rock.

  • SPIRIT WAAALKEEEEEEERR!!! :D

  • it wasn't death cult, it was the first concert with their name the cult :p

  • Jools holand intruduced it with, " for the first time ever the cult"

  • Actually, this is their first appearance as simply "The Cult". They had just dropped the "Death" from their name just before this video. This video is on their DVD anthology

  • You're right, I keep forgetting to change the titles.

  • This is one of the few Death Cult one to appear on Pure Cult (For rockers ravers lovers and Sinners) bloody legendary track, but i prefer the Later version, its more refined

  • Agree 100%

  • Great song great era along with Siouxsie they created their own souned and image.

  • Ian Astbury!!! Billy Duffy!!! son los dioses del mundo!!! nadie nadie nadie sabe hacer mejor Gothic Rock que ellos.

  • FUCK ME that voice is sick!it's the best I've fucking heard, he's fantastic!

  • who are the 2 chicks , one blonde and the other red ?

  • great track great album great band

  • Good stuff. You can really see that Astbury was channeling some of the Morrison mojo even then. You can also hear echoes of "She Sells Sanctuary" in the main riff. Cool look at the early Cult.

  • Oh yes, better than sex!!!

  • Or WITH sex...Yessssssssssssssssss!

  • not listened to this for a dogs age thanks

  • This song is possibly the best song to ever exist! Its amazing. This is a pure Earth Song.

  • They were awseome as Southern Death Cult. Death Cult started the wind down, Cult was commercial shite, then Les Emu Warner joined and the rest is history :-)

Great band live at Nightmoves in Glasgow 1980's.

    Elektrapunk

  • hey! i went to nightmoves in the 80s too. what a club - top bands ( eg ausgang supporting sex gang) and beautiful people. ahem, well, mostly. ah, the memories...

  • Oh what , I've been to nightmoves . Did you know the regulars there ?

  • loving it....only have 2 discs missing from my Cult collection after Electric...if anyone can help I am looking for Moya 7" and Gods Zoo 7"...would be most grateful and willing to pay a reasonable price.

  • Hi Dalmaik, Might have Moya but collection at my parents so will need to rummage. Will let you know. Sheena

  • That would be great. Thanks Sheena.

  • love them forever and ever!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is so great to see! I love it. thank you. and i miss having The Tube on tv.

  • THEY DROPPED DEATH FROM THEIR NAME FOR COMMERCIAL REASONS...lightweights!

  • it worked didn't it? lmao. and The Cult is a brilliant name.

  • I remember seeing this on Tube and thinking "that is the greatest thing I've ever heard"

What a tosser I was, lol

  • thanks for posting bro..rare rare look at early cult..

  • I dindn't know Spiritwalker was already written when they were still Death Cult, so i guess this song is even older than i thought. It's still great

  • kk thx for the info :D

  • i fucking hate the cult. they're such complete and utter bastards. They suck, alot.

  • and your reasons for saying this are based on what?

    whatever, I love them.

  • Big Whoop to you too. I don't think that anyone here really cares about your stupid mindless insults. You're probably just a 'youtube instigator' anyway.

  • I checked out your profile-you have no taste obviously. Don't like the Cult-then go to another site asshole.

  • umm, i checked out your profile...you have videos by the pussycat dolls, queen and evanescence in your favorites, and you say i have no taste? you should be extremely embarrassed right now.

  • Monkey see monkey fucking do--come up with your own line of attack shit for brains. Try to remember that it was your stupid negativity that invited the attack. Got nothing positive to contribute, stay in your room and pretend to have a life.

  • aren't them the cult?! wtf is the death cult?

  • They were originally the Southern Death Cult, then after a lineup change they became Death Cult, then finally The Cult. Most of Death Cults record was changed a bit and released as The Cult - Dreamtime.

  • fuck yea!!

  • still got 2 more to upload, I hope to have them up tonight.

  • Awesome video.

  • I still have some more death cult videos to upload tonight.
