As far as I can see, both players are using all fingers most of the time. Not sure that a vibraphone player would naturally play piano with only two fingers and as Hampton played piano (and drums) prior to specialising in the vibraphone, it is likely he played the piano as a piano player.
Of course I could be wrong .... there is always a first time !
The gentleman seated next to Hamp, one Milton Buckner, is a keyboard legend in his own right. Milt invented the "locked-hand" block chord approach to jazz piano later embraced by George Shearing and Dave Brubeck. Milt was also, along with Jimmy Smith and Wild Bill Davis, an early proponent of the Hammond B-3 organ and accompanied yet another Hampton alumnus, tenor great Illinois Jacquet, in a trio while kicking wild bass with his left foot. Jo Jones was usually the resident drummer in this trio.
Somewhere along my family line lionel hampton is god father to someone in my family. This is my first time listening to him and he's amazing.
