Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art has an adjustable device on display that does this with a lever so you can adjust the repeating track on the fly. Weird, but it could make somebody happy.
PS: It was the highpoint of the exhibit; the rest was even weirder and less interesting.
wouldnt this ruin the record grooves by cutting into the wall, reminds me of a movie i saw on the sci fi channel this guy was sitting in a bar and Achy Breaky Heart by billy ray cyrus was playing on the jukebox and it was skipping on: "My Achy Breaky heart" and it kept playing that part over and over again and the guy kicked the jukebox and the bartender i think took his car keys and kicked him out
creepy! Wouldnt a strip of tape be quicker and easier to apply and remove? Either way, This vid gives me the creeps. Not sure why. In a sense this is an earyl form of ;'sampling', but the record 'pop' makes it sound so great.
Tape or stickers work well but give a much more stable loop. For me the its the occasional random changes that happen as the wire stretches that make it..

This video could easily be the beginning of a French art film - creates a great atmosphere.

'Mechanical sampling' perhaps?

'mechanical sempling'. I love it.
Good point as well on the wire vs tape. Thanks for the reply, and the sub. Good stuff.
