I love this bosa nova/ samba style guitar, but it is a genera i'm sadly unfamiliar with, but would like to get more into. can anyone suggest any albums for me to dig into?
A family friend who was a huge fan met Laurindo in an airport. After a brief conversation, he noted that Laurindo seemed "down" to which he told the story that a his original recordings had been stolen by a record company...this friend was a bull-dog attorney and got the originals back (for no charge to Laurindo).
He and my mom visited him in LA and had a blast, introducing them to many jazz greats...at 83, mom still has a blast telling of the wonder of it all.
This is one of the most beautiful things ever to grace my earholes. he has the grace and finesse of a classical player but the swing only a jazz man can bring to the table.
@flyawayhome3 , Yes his name was Steve Race [1921-2009] He was a renowned pianist himself and it's a pity he came of as a snob. Out if character, oh well. :)

@wlavin well he doesn't say anything is explicitly false because it's all his personal opinion, but all the stuff about how the guitar's been tainted... just because it's not classical or jazz doesn't make it shit.

@uglyguitarman Because most jazz musicians probably don't actually know thousands of chords. Hundreds maybe if you count each and every variation of a few basic ones. And 'rock stars' know more than three chords again depending on how you count. Those are just chiches that make a nice youtube comment but really have no bearing on reality at all. And why is one a musician and one a star? Are there no rock musicians? Or Jazz stars?
@uglyguitarman I was just highlighting the hidden truth of what you're saying. Most people have tastes of limited sophistication. Yes, it was hyperbole. And so was my statement. But notice this as well: The shittiest music is often played the loudest.
"A jazz musician knows thousands of chords and has an audience of three. A rock star knows three chords and has an audience of thousands."
As someone who plays both rock and jazz I can vouch for the accuracy of that statement - it is much nearer the mark than many would realise :-o
It doesn't mean the jazz musicians are superior to the rock musicians, it is more a sad reflection on audiences, maybe - Perhaps replace 'knows' with 'plays' and it is spot on.
@uglyguitarman I'm ok for ACDC, but you CAN'T say that rock stars as Jimmy Page or Mark Knopfler knows three chords ;) But I know that you were speaking about these Sum 41 and others... fake rock.
@uglyguitarman I'd disagree with that. Because I can't really think that Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, or Jimmi Hendrix only know three chords. I love some Jazz, but this piece sounded like elevator music

Great, zecalouro, and thanks a lot for this gem. May I suggest you include the name of the song in the title of the video (One Note Samba or Samba de Uma Nota Só, by Tom Jobim.)
The key change from the intro to the ensemble section is brilliant. Then they modulate again for the vibes solo. This kind of jazz stands out because they have an arrangement. Esta ė legal.
<love the intro by the late Steve Race. His brother was my solicitor in Lincoln UK But this Almeida / MJQ cut is just fabulous Fantastic blend Thanks Zacalouro-david
Agreed - what a blowhard! Laurindo and the MJQ entirely wiped out this set. the audience must have had just had electro convulsive therapy. They're dead.... I don't think I could have stayed in my chair.

Yes indeed. So much better than this new young person's "pop" music (gear, fab, daddy-o) As for those "Beatles" well they'll be forgotten by 1967. Any chance of editing that man's comments out as they don't deserve to be remembered. Great clip though.
The man was brilliant. Brazil is a breeding ground for great music. Try to find a clip of his playing Kenton's Artistry in Rhythm. It is as amazing as this piece. Let's hear it for Milt Jackson - no slouch there. As far as formal training and even reading music is concerned, Errol Garner allegedly was self taught and couldn't read - didn't seem to hurt him any.
Almeida's name is woefully left out in discussions of the pantheon of great guitarists. The 2 "Brazilliance" records he made with Bud Shank are not too be missed.
His 1953 "Brazilliance" album puts him ahead of Jobim and other founders of Bosa Nova. Check out laurindo-almeida.blogspot (dot com) which has a nice history.
Is it just me or does the guy rubbing the commentary seem like a self-righteous nit. "...which is the right way to play the guitar?" It's nice to see that we as a society have grown enough to understand that there can be more than one "right" way to do something...especially something as abstract as music.
does music get any better than those first three chords, from :55 to 1:00? i mean, i like jazz, i like vibraphones, i like a whole bunch of other genres of music as well, but those three chords pretty much say everything i need to hear.

que suavidad!! can we have postings of the grat music of laurindo almeida´s band called LA 4 ? that was probably the best bossa nova I have ever heard and i miss it so here! is there anyone out there who has some music to insert here by LA 4 ? thanks in advance !
I'm speechless! There are no words to describe how good Laurindo is. It's as if the guitar was a part of his body... so natural... so beautiful. I'm really proud to be born in this wonderful country called Brazil.
I bought this wonderful album (Colaboration)some 40 years ago in a small music shop in the Bronx and have not stopped listening to it since then. Laurindo was a true master and his 'collaborating' with MJQ is the best of all worlds. What a treat for us!
the first part is amazing but i have another one in audio where vibraphone solo and the piano solo are different. indeed, the audio version( that i have)sounds better for me because of the vibpne. and piano solo and the last part of the guitar. greetings!
Now, that's the way a guitar should be played! What a pleasure just to listen to a real musician. Thank you, thank you for posting. I had nevrr heard him before, but I certainly won't forget this! . . . jenny6664
Mr. Almeida was my main introduction to classical music when I was a child. I get choked up whenever I hear him play. Thank you for this wonderful, rare post!

Do you have any idea where I can buy this album today? (Colaboration). Their rendition of 'Concerto de Aranguez' (sp) is the best I've ever heard.

Muito bom Laurindo! Just killer here.
Such a warm sound. Love the intro dig on teenagers and what they've done to the "once-noble" guitar. XD

he dissed the guitar so bad lol
yuckyteeth 3 years ago
no he didn't - he dissed the way young kids were playing the guitar at the time.

The bass line is setting the tempo beautifully...and man, those magic fingers of Almeida! :-)
Aaaah music...so good!

the first part is amazing but i have another one in audio where vibraphone solo and the piano solo are different. indeed, the audio version( that i have)sounds better for me because of the vibpne. and piano solo and the last part of the guitar. greetings!

Now, that's the way a guitar should be played! What a pleasure just to listen to a real musician. Thank you, thank you for posting. I had nevrr heard him before, but I certainly won't forget this! . . . jenny6664

that´s what I say too. Only few guitar players master a similar style, Charlie Byrd or Luis Bonfa maybe or Bola Sete !

jenny6664-Get Presti-Lagoya as well. Or Los Indios Tabajaros. You will love them all,and they are the very best.

Mr. Almeida was my main introduction to classical music when I was a child. I get choked up whenever I hear him play. Thank you for this wonderful, rare post!

Чудесный чистый интеллигентный джаз.
Как здорово слышать хитро вплетённые в джаз босса-новы Жобима.
