  • What year is this from?

  • Love that version... But question : who died ?

  • I love this bosa nova/ samba style guitar, but it is a genera i'm sadly unfamiliar with, but would like to get more into. can anyone suggest any albums for me to dig into?

  • @Robinsonero Look into Raphael Rabello, Baden Powell, and Joao Bosco. there are all Brasilian Music giants.

  • what a beautiful performance... so smooth and easy :)

  • Steve Race - look you! Great to hear his voice again, post My Music days.

  • A family friend who was a huge fan met Laurindo in an airport. After a brief conversation, he noted that Laurindo seemed "down" to which he told the story that a his original recordings had been stolen by a record company...this friend was a bull-dog attorney and got the originals back (for no charge to Laurindo).

He and my mom visited him in LA and had a blast, introducing them to many jazz greats...at 83, mom still has a blast telling of the wonder of it all.

  • Does anybody know what that is on the side of the guitar?

  • @Leedysgladstones that be a towel

  • @Leedysgladstones For wiping his hands. It gets hot in those recording studios, under lights etc.

  • Dazzling!

  • This is one of the most beautiful things ever to grace my earholes. he has the grace and finesse of a classical player but the swing only a jazz man can bring to the table.

  • @flyawayhome3 , Yes his name was Steve Race [1921-2009] He was a renowned pianist himself and it's a pity he came of as a snob. Out if character, oh well. :)

  • @Flyawayhome3

I care that you care about the announcer, who cares? Everybody! They just dont know...

  • One note samba

  • anyone know what song he is playing at 1:40?

  • @ohbrobig

    One note samba

  • I perform this tune at every gig and I stil can't make it sound like him. What a genuis. Bravo!

    Anne Allman

    USA

  • Bbossanova is the music process that grows by hand with jazz but on its own each as separate movements

  • Where was i that is the first time i see these gem of session so well videotaped

  • cool for its time but as since has been out dated , will look more of his stuff up. but i get the feeling i'm waiting for something

  • the host was a bit sided a the end...

  • @ loaring45 "He made it look so easy. I'd give my right hand to be able to play like that." Many have tried and failed to create a YogiBerra-ism. But you have done it. I tip my beer glass to you, sir.

  • whats that on the side of his guitar?

  • He was the very best there was, very hard to top this guy in any way

  • You can see large mic on his shirt

  • when is this stuff man :)

  • beautiful stuff.

  • Awweeeesoooommmee

  • Incredible!

  • smooooooooooooth.

  • Wow, i wish someday i can play guitar like him... i love guitar, i love music, i love jazz..

  • yes Sir,John lewis -piano,Percy Heath- Bass,Milt Jackson -Vibrafon und Kenny Clarke -Drums,known as Modern Jazz Qwartett

  • Someone know the names on the musicians?

  • This is fantastic. Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • this is amazing. although the announcer does seem to be a bit of a prick...

  • @flyawayhome3 Who gives a shit about the announcer?

  • @dngz0r I do. You don't. Who cares...

  • @flyawayhome3 Maybe he is arrogant. But what is he saying that isn't true??

  • @wlavin well he doesn't say anything is explicitly false because it's all his personal opinion, but all the stuff about how the guitar's been tainted... just because it's not classical or jazz doesn't make it shit.

  • Pure bliss. Genius.

  • Clearly, 15 people were so in carried away by the greatness of this piece, that they hit the dislike button by mistake. Don't worry we understand..

  • so Beautiful. One of the most inspiring on youtube..

  • Absolutely amazingly beautiful musical genius.

  • con quien mas toco?era solista ¡?

  • The music is just marvellous, but oh boy, that pompous announcers comments are dreadfully cheesy.

  • Laurindo, the real creator of Bossa Nova, the best interpreter of Villalobos and a great guy!

  • @A48289 About a decade before Getz/Byrd/Gilberto, Almeida recorded a Brazilian jazz album with Bud Shank. Heavenly stuff.

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • A jazz musician knows thousands of chords and has an audience of three. A rock star knows three chords and has an audience of thousands.

  • @uglyguitarman This statement makes you and thousands of people sound so fucking dumb I can't stand it.

  • @ReverendNovember Why does that make me sound dumb? I like jazz.

  • @uglyguitarman Because most jazz musicians probably don't actually know thousands of chords. Hundreds maybe if you count each and every variation of a few basic ones. And 'rock stars' know more than three chords again depending on how you count. Those are just chiches that make a nice youtube comment but really have no bearing on reality at all. And why is one a musician and one a star? Are there no rock musicians? Or Jazz stars?

  • @ReverendNovember Well yea. It's definitely a hyperbole. Nobody is expected to take that seriously. It's just a saying.

  • @uglyguitarman I was just highlighting the hidden truth of what you're saying. Most people have tastes of limited sophistication. Yes, it was hyperbole. And so was my statement. But notice this as well: The shittiest music is often played the loudest.

  • @uglyguitarman A rock "star" 's goal is celebrity. A musicians goal is music.

  • @uglyguitarman The amount of chords a musician knows is no better a measure of their worth than the amount of fans they have.

  • @joshisanonymous Dude. It's just an expression.

  • @uglyguitarman And it's a bad one that you, and those who gave you a thumbs up, must believe, at least to some extent, since you're quoting it here.

  • @uglyguitarman

"A jazz musician knows thousands of chords and has an audience of three. A rock star knows three chords and has an audience of thousands."

As someone who plays both rock and jazz I can vouch for the accuracy of that statement - it is much nearer the mark than many would realise :-o

It doesn't mean the jazz musicians are superior to the rock musicians, it is more a sad reflection on audiences, maybe - Perhaps replace 'knows' with 'plays' and it is spot on.

  • @uglyguitarman I'm ok for ACDC, but you CAN'T say that rock stars as Jimmy Page or Mark Knopfler knows three chords ;) But I know that you were speaking about these Sum 41 and others... fake rock.

  • @HeTheo Very true. There are obviously exceptions.

  • @uglyguitarman I'd disagree with that. Because I can't really think that Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, or Jimmi Hendrix only know three chords. I love some Jazz, but this piece sounded like elevator music

  • @monday4002 There are exceptions. It's just a joke.

  • @uglyguitarman . and the three blind mice have an audience of of one angry farmers wife//

  • @uglyguitarman : I had never thought in that big idea. Thats right!!!

  • @uglyguitarman Are you implying that just because they play three chords, that's all they know? They use three chords because it sounds good.

More complex does not mean better.

  • @JeremyxFisher Good point. It's just a saying that I find funny.

  • @uglyguitarman thats sort of a force...

  • @uglyguitarman Jazz and Punk are both wonderful forms of expression, while I understand the humor in your observation, don't shrug off simpler, yet equally powerful, forms of music.

  • oh wow . best live performance ive seen on youtube in a while !

  • Mais saborosas. I was very fortunate to hear and see this master musician in concert in The San Fernando Valley in the '90s. What a special treat. I frequently revisit his recordings, especially Duets with Spanish Guitar. Thank you for posting this video.

It is a lesson in what can happen when everyone listens to each other.

  • Yeah Man!!!!!!!

  • YouTube doesn't tell us the date on this black and white video - but I'd say it's in the '60s - and still in excellent condition. Almeida's playing is so smooth - it looks as if it's easy to do.

  • This is beautiful.

I seem to have vague memories of it. Although I was very young the genius and beauty of it made it's mark. I remember being uncomfortable with the presenter's off colour remarks. I rmember how bossa nova was beautiful subtle and funky but seemed to be a guilty pleasure - and how the audience were just so emotionally repressed. Although I did not possess the language to express how I felt, it made it's mark.

  • im 13 years old and this almost made me cry its beutiful

  • @BitsOfYourFriendsOnU you have an open feeling heart, bless you

  • He made it look so easy. I'd give my right hand to be able to play like that.

  • @loaring45 you can make music with just your left hand on the guitar, but it is somewhat limiting. there are other appendages you can surrender, one of which will let you sing with the beegees

  • favoloso

  • Great, zecalouro, and thanks a lot for this gem. May I suggest you include the name of the song in the title of the video (One Note Samba or Samba de Uma Nota Só, by Tom Jobim.)

  • This makes me want to get trapped in an elevator.

  • Absolute perfection!

  • a que genial (8)

  • The key change from the intro to the ensemble section is brilliant. Then they modulate again for the vibes solo. This kind of jazz stands out because they have an arrangement. Esta ė legal.

  • So beautiful, you'll never see talent like this again..

  • god

  • Wow-(again !!) Simply the very very best, notice how revered he was by The MJQ ? They loved his absolute skills.-david

  • This is exquisite,

but another track on the MJQ album with Laurindo Almeida, "Concierto de Aranjuez," is one of the absolute BEST of all time . . .

    Do you have that?

  • Great!

  • when is this video from?

  • <love the intro by the late Steve Race. His brother was my solicitor in Lincoln UK But this Almeida / MJQ cut is just fabulous Fantastic blend Thanks Zacalouro-david

  • "i don't think any instrument has received quite such maltreatment in recent years, or perhaps ever, as the guitar."

setting it on fire and smashing it is maltreatment? i thought that was considered affection.

  • com certeza, Laurindo toca muito...

    Mas disso eu jah sabia

  • What year was this recorded? About 1961?

  • @betelorg closer to 1967.

  • Get it' Jazz Quarters.

  • Agreed - what a blowhard! Laurindo and the MJQ entirely wiped out this set. the audience must have had just had electro convulsive therapy. They're dead.... I don't think I could have stayed in my chair.

  • @oogaachaka Right?!

  • Esta musica nos hace revivir!

  • Incedible ! Great class!!!!!!!

  • I have always loved this tune since I was a child. If music were a mood drug I would be high all day listening to this type of music.

  • Olha... Muito Bom! Obrigada!!!

  • What a unique intro to the song. Beautiful stuff by all.

  • magic

  • La meilleure interprétation instrumentale de

Samba de uma nota so !!!

    JFM.

  • Now how can he play like that without making any stupid faces nor looking like he's about to have a baby. he must not feel the music Huh? heh ...heh heh. One of the true accomplished greats and most heard but not seen on soundtracks of movies television. Now dig Erroll Garners One Note Samba as well. Another totally different angle still with incredible class

  • Beautiful. Thanks for this.

  • I think the music is great but like the rest of you I don't like Steve Race's comments. Would be better without them.

  • The truth doesn't have to be liked.

Steve Race is right about Laurindo as well, he is magnificent. (as is Erroll, who numbered Steve Race among his many fans).

  • who on earth is steve race?

  • That introduction seemed a little snarky to me--guess overweening hosts were considered "cool" back in the 60s. But no denying the talent. 5 stars.

  • Totally agreed. Wouldn't say it otherwise myself.

  • Yes indeed. So much better than this new young person's "pop" music (gear, fab, daddy-o) As for those "Beatles" well they'll be forgotten by 1967. Any chance of editing that man's comments out as they don't deserve to be remembered. Great clip though.

  • DANG

  • One of the best comments I've seen on youtube.

  • The man was brilliant. Brazil is a breeding ground for great music. Try to find a clip of his playing Kenton's Artistry in Rhythm. It is as amazing as this piece. Let's hear it for Milt Jackson - no slouch there. As far as formal training and even reading music is concerned, Errol Garner allegedly was self taught and couldn't read - didn't seem to hurt him any.

  • One Word!

    SUPERB!!

  • Great piece of music but the commentator is a pompous ass.

  • guitar intro and cross to 1 note samba is magnificent, guitar part is much more complex then on Jobim's part. superb! thanks for sharing.

  • Superb! I sure am glad the host knows the "correct way to play the guitar." Yeesh!

  • thats not a guitar its a piano and a xylaphone thing

  • GO BAGS

  • Almeida's name is woefully left out in discussions of the pantheon of great guitarists. The 2 "Brazilliance" records he made with Bud Shank are not too be missed.

  • His 1953 "Brazilliance" album puts him ahead of Jobim and other founders of Bosa Nova. Check out laurindo-almeida.blogspot (dot com) which has a nice history.

  • Alucinante el maestro como siempre ....... uffffff

  • You know what I find funny? How snobbishness increases exponentially when coupled with a British accent.

  • yeah i know the host of that show is a douche...i think i just found my favorite jazz guitarist :)

  • Is it just me or does the guy rubbing the commentary seem like a self-righteous nit. "...which is the right way to play the guitar?" It's nice to see that we as a society have grown enough to understand that there can be more than one "right" way to do something...especially something as abstract as music.

I do so love this recording. ::sigh::

  • if you heard some of the people at my school play, youd know theres a "wrong" way to play guitar.

and trust me, there is. oh god there is.

  • @smartguyreviews im 16 all i play nowadays is this kind of music. its butter to my ears

  • does music get any better than those first three chords, from :55 to 1:00? i mean, i like jazz, i like vibraphones, i like a whole bunch of other genres of music as well, but those three chords pretty much say everything i need to hear.

  • Milt Jackson is no slouch on vibes either!

  • Wonderful playing--a master at work. The presenter must go down in history as one of the worst musical snobs ever. Hilarious!

  • Worst musical snob ever - I agree with that! I've loved Laurindo's playing for decades. And likewise, some of those plectrum-using, three-chord types equally as much.

  • smooth

  • I bought the LP (remember LP's?...lol) when it first came out...memorized every note on it for trumpet/flugal reference...the MJQ and Almeida ave always been great influences in mu playing...they are the epitome of class and style,,,,such great style

  • I was privileged to actually hear Almeida live in Detroit many years ago.

He played in a local club. I treasure that, because I know how lucky I am.

    sanjosemike

  • i'm loving that intro, OMG!!!!! i forgot how the song went for a sec ;)

  • que suavidad!! can we have postings of the grat music of laurindo almeida´s band called LA 4 ? that was probably the best bossa nova I have ever heard and i miss it so here! is there anyone out there who has some music to insert here by LA 4 ? thanks in advance !

  • when was thi recorded?

  • I'm speechless! There are no words to describe how good Laurindo is. It's as if the guitar was a part of his body... so natural... so beautiful. I'm really proud to be born in this wonderful country called Brazil.

  • WHAT?!

  • What is the name of this song... is it One Note Samba?

  • Yes, indeed, Antonio Carlos Jobim's "One Note Samba"

  • I bought this wonderful album (Colaboration)some 40 years ago in a small music shop in the Bronx and have not stopped listening to it since then. Laurindo was a true master and his 'collaborating' with MJQ is the best of all worlds. What a treat for us!

  • Do you have any idea where I can buy this album today? (Colaboration). Their rendition of 'Concerto de Aranguez' (sp) is the best I've ever heard.

  • Second only to Segovia (if even that)

  • I wonder what he thought of Hendrix.

  • Muito bom Laurindo! Just killer here.

Such a warm sound. Love the intro dig on teenagers and what they've done to the "once-noble" guitar. XD

  • he dissed the guitar so bad lol

  • no he didn't - he dissed the way young kids were playing the guitar at the time.

  • The bass line is setting the tempo beautifully...and man, those magic fingers of Almeida! :-)

    Aaaah music...so good!

  • the first part is amazing but i have another one in audio where vibraphone solo and the piano solo are different. indeed, the audio version( that i have)sounds better for me because of the vibpne. and piano solo and the last part of the guitar. greetings!

  • Ooh, Steve Race gets in a dig about nasty smelly rockers there. Niiiice.

  • Beautiful Music.

  • Almeida *WITH* Quartet = 1 + 4 = 5

  • Almeida is a guest of the MJQ he is not a member of the group

  • For anyone who likes Laurindo Almeida, get the Stan Getz/Laurindo Almeida CD from 1963. Absolutely CLASSIC tunes which really ROCK...er...SAMBA!!!

  • WOW! I really love this. I lost track of time for 5 minutes there..

    Thanks for showing!!

    Per-Olov

  • This is just fucken Gorgeous!

  • A real classic!

  • Now, that's the way a guitar should be played! What a pleasure just to listen to a real musician. Thank you, thank you for posting. I had nevrr heard him before, but I certainly won't forget this! . . . jenny6664

  • that´s what I say too. Only few guitar players master a similar style, Charlie Byrd or Luis Bonfa maybe or Bola Sete !

  • jenny6664-Get Presti-Lagoya as well. Or Los Indios Tabajaros. You will love them all,and they are the very best.

  • Mr. Almeida was my main introduction to classical music when I was a child. I get choked up whenever I hear him play. Thank you for this wonderful, rare post!

  • he played for the great stan kenton band in the 1950s what a great player .

  • vaya convinacion¡¡

  • even if he hit the micro at 2:09 he is realy amaizing
