There is no point in debating this issue. Secretariat was the fastest race horse of all time. Not because of what he did on the track but because he just was. When you run a mile and a half and run each quarter mile faster than the previous quarter, that is all you have to say. Physically, he had no equal.
The Americans believe that outside the U.S. borders there is a huge expanse of lifeless desert. If an American horse wins in USA, it automatically becomes the best in the world. Out of your Truman Show, everyone knows:The best jockey of all time is the Italian FRANKIE DETTORI .The best trotter of all time is the Italian "VARENNE". The best horse of all time (gallop) is the Italian "RIBOT". Secretariat is a great horse, but is not sufficient to make a recod of time to be the best.Read Wikipedia
I love the horse, he is something to see on film, I can't imagine what it was like to see him in real life. But his story combined with his owner is what gives us reason to believe and to hope and have faith. I could watch these races for ever they are kicks! You know God has to show out every once in a while what a creation!
i have always wanted to be a jockey but i always thought that i wouldnt be good at racing. But when i heard about Secretariat i have a great feeling that i would win races. Thank you so much Secretariat, i love you -3
The ignorance and arrogance U.S. is famous. If a horse wins in the U.S.A is automatically become the best in the world, as if outside the USA there was an expanse of lifeless desert. Out your Truman Show ,in the real world everyone knows : the best trotter ever is the italian VARENNE the best horse galloping is the Italian RIBOT the best jockey ever is the italian FRANKIE DETTORI ! Movies are nice, but in reality Secretariat has never participated in only one important race outside the USA !!
@MrItaliano1900 man shut up secretariat holds the record in italy in spain in france even in mars so we say secretariat is the best because he holds alll records in history , secretariat broke ribots race time puting him at the top of all horses so fuck you please
@ferromerocolt44 but what time are you talking about? There is no record of time. In the gallop the time is not important. Because all depends on the terrain, rain, grass, sand etc. etc.. also depends on how many horses are there. If a horse is unable to leave the group will do a bad time. To be the No.1 .... you need to race against other horses around the world , won the most prestigious competitions. You can not run only in the U.S. , make Hollywood movie and think you're the best ...
@MrItaliano1900 US horses do race against the best and WIN, winning 8 of 16 Dubai World Cups. Europeans TRY to race against the best, but have never won a Breeders Cup or Kentucky Derby. Looks like the European horses are the myopic ones who can't win outside of their home turf.
@MrItaliano1900 You dirty filthy wop, did Ribot ever race outside of Europe? Secretariat raced in Canada and won races on DIRT AND GRASS. Did Ribot ever race on dirt, you fucking greaseball? Sec would bury Ribot giving him a 2 length head start on ANY TURF COURSE IN THE WORLD. His jockey said he was even better on grass after he EASILY won the MOW Stakes on turf against older champions, never shown the whip the whole race. He had the biggest stride I have ever seen and would massacre Ribot.
@MrItaliano1900 LOL American horses have won 50% of the Dubai World Cups...an event held literally on the other side of the world..4 of the top 6 finishing times in the DWC are owned by American horses...during that same time frame foreign horses have won 2 of 16 Breeders Cup classics...and both foreign horses are from the Americas (Argentina / Canada). So American horses win 50% of the time in the biggest even outside of the US, yet no Euro horse has won the biggest event in the US
I saw a video interview of Ronnie Turcotte where he said he was looking at the infield clock, not at where the other horses were. He said he scared himself when he saw the time.
that's how pathetic that race is, one of the best in your country (lol!!). And that's how pathetic Phar Lap is who ran there, and Aussie racing in general. Go bury your head in the sand, descendant of a British criminal!
@manikato75 You mean that bloody castrate?! Nah, I'm pretty sure the best US horses like Bid and Sec would have killed that ball-less wonder. Even one of our minor horses, Gallant Sir, beat his time in Mexico(LOL!). By the way, So You Think is New Zealand bred and Caviar hasn't raced anything yet, except her fellow milk horses. Your Melbourne Cup is so damn pathetic, a decent (but not great) horse, Kingston Rule, STILL holds the record!! haaaahahahaha!!! I'm done with you Aussie crap.
@manikato75 Your head is the one that's cracked! Stop with the Phar Lap garbage on this video, backwoods monkey. Your brain must have gone on a walkabout if you are putting that damn gelding who raced mainly donkeys in his career next to Secretariat. Sec didn't carry as much weight because he didn't race past three, but did no nuts ever win a race going every 1/4 faster than the previous one, throughout a 1 1/2 mile race? Only true greats like Nijisnky and Spectacular Bid stand near him.
@manikato75 Sec killed the field in his last two races on grass, you descendant of a criminal! Turcotte said the colt was even better on grass, just from how blasted older turf champions at the MOW Stakes. He proved his 3 losses at 3 were flukes (abscess, illness, last minute sub on slop while preparing for MOW Stakes on grass a WEEK LATER) by killing the field after each loss. By the way according to Tommy Woodcock's diary, Phar Lap's trainer gave the horse tonics that contained...
@manikato75 arsenic, strychnine, belladonna, cocaine and caffeine - all this so castrate can beat those donkeys he ran against. Haaahahaha!! And his times still sucked compared to the true greats! So You Think was born and bred in New Zealand, you fool. He barely beat Workforce, but lost Rewilding (lol!). Now go commit a crime - after all, it's what your ancestor did!
@manikato75 that's how pathetic that race is, one of the best in your country (lol!!). And that's how pathetic Phar Lap is who ran there, and Aussie racing in general. Go bury your hand in the sand, descendant of a British criminal!
@manicato75 that's how pathetic that race is, one of the best in your country (lol!!). And that's how pathetic Phar Lap is who ran there, and Aussie racing in general. Go bury your head in the sand, descendant of a British criminal!

@manikato75 Racing experts have said that Sec could have carried any weight and won. He was built like a brick wall, and unlike that castrate Phar Lap, Sec was a real, majestic stallion, not a half-horse. How often do three-year-olds get handicapped with heavy weights in this day and age, you misinformed twit? At 4 Sec could have carried a bloody fridge on his back and still win. Even his lesser son (compared to Risen Star and others) Kingston Rule still holds the Melbourne Cup record, cont.
@rcschumann Could of should of but didnt ,Phar Lap was bigger than Sec you monkey American,Sec 16.2 hands Phar Lap 17.1 hands,Sec girth 75 inches Phar Lap 79 inches!!
Kingston Rule does have the best time for the Melbourne Cup but was a crap horse he dosent even rate in the top 50 Melbourne Cup winner, his time means nothing!!
Did Sec win 4 group races in seven days no!
as a four your old did he carry 138 pounds over 2miles and win no!
did he win the Futurity as a 4 year old carrying 143 pds
@manikato75 Hey, Aussie ex-criminal, Sec won twice on turf, including his last race at Woodbine, beating older, more experienced horses by nine lengths in frigid weather with his jockey easing him down before the finish. What do you think he would have done at 4, you stupid monkey? Did half-horse (sorry Phar Lap) ever win a race by accelerating every 1/4 mile from start to finish, like Sec did at KD and Belmont? Of course no balls was raced much more - that bloody castrate couldn't breed.
Just to let you people who think they know a better horse than Secretariat- That if your little favorite horse wins the Triple Crown at three years of age and winning with a record
of 31 lengths in less than three minuets on the last Triple Crown race- well thats when you can brag about all you want by saying how the horse is better than Secretariat.
When you live in the middle of horse country as I did during those years it is hard to explain to people what this meant to the nation. It was something I doubt we will ever see again. Such a magnificent animal. I know the first time I saw him up close I was blown away by his size. After God created Secretariat he broke the mold and threw it away.
Secretariet was the greatest horse that ever lived..And the record books seem to agree with that. Mine that Bird is just a footnote in racing history...sorry
@yourdickis2limp Really? Lets take a look at their times in the Derby: Mine That Bird 2:02:66 Secretariat 1:59:40. Maybe your math skills need to be sharpened up a little. BTW...Did the Bird win the Triple Crown? For those of us who saw him run, there will never be another like Secretariat. I lived in Bourbon County in the years following Secretariat's retirement to Claiborne Farm. I had the priveldge of seeing him twice in person at stud. Its sometimes difficult to watch these videos.
@yourdickis2limp Absolutely idiotic comment. Educate yourself in the filed before making such a fool of yourself. Learn to back up a statement. Oh...you can't.
I just saw the movie and came home to watch videos. Secretariat was a magnificant animal- real perfection -but I couldn't help but think that a horse's legs really don't appear to be sturdy enough for that type of running. I know nothing about horses, but at 1200 lbs, doesn't it seem that their legs are too fragile to move at those speeds for those distances? Their legs look like all bone and no muscle and it looks like they could easily twist their anklese w/those high hoofs. It's unnerving.
You know, back when I was a child, I read a book about Seabiscuit, and I felt so badly when I read how they added weight to his saddles. Five pounds extra! Ten pounds extra! It seemed so unfair... until I grew up and came to a realization. Horses weigh over a thousand pounds. Putting an extra five or ten pounds in their saddle bags would be insignificant compared to their weight and strength. I doubt they notice. The weight issue is in the minds of the bettors, not the horses.
Secretariat was an amazing horse, the perfect horse. But you can't forget Bold Ruler, his sire. That horse was a phenomenal stallion who proved himself time and time again with weights unbelievable and running for a year with a 2 and a half inch bone splinter in one of his legs. Hint of what was to come I guess.
@HattieLovesCattie Yes, that is very odd. Fact is, while visually the Dr. said his heart was large...who really knows if it was 18 poinds or 23 pounds. I beleive that Sec's raw power was much more than his heart. Key To The Mint had a very large heart as did Sham. Their records are respectable, but they are not considered great horses.
@bbmtge I wish the movie had been a box office hit like Seabiscuit was.I did see the Sect movie and enjoyed it.I live near Va and hope the next time we go up to DC, to stop at the Caroline Co Fairgrounds and see the barn where Big Red was born. They moved it across the road there to make room for the state fair.
bon1042 I bought the book 'Secretariat' today. Read to page 49. I did not know that Bold Ruler ran with high weights and won so many times. Just another clue how his son would have handle it Bui I really did not need any clue. I know without a doubt he would have handle weight better than any horse that ever lived. Why, simply because he was such a strong horse with unbelievable stamia.
@rscarbro100 I guess I need to start fm the beginning and learn more important details/info. I read it twice 6 yrs ago when I was learning all this and refer to it all the time. That's a major piece of information. Glad you have the book. I was in WalMart last night, and shld've looked at new edition to read the new preface and any other additions. I have the green/grey/white 2nd edition paperback. They're all over Ebay and Amazon, also both editions on Secretariat website. thanks again
Phar Lap. Thanks to our peculiar tendency to attribute every virtue to those who meet untimely deaths, the surest route to unqualified acclaim is to live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse. In 1932 an Australian racehorse named Phar Lap did just that, setting an American speed record for winning an overblown reputation. It took him only two minutes, two and fourfifths seconds, and he didn’t even do it in America.
--including jockey Eddie Arcaro, New York State Steward Francis Dunne and Marshall Cassidy, who succeeded his father as dean of American racing officials--
as the greatest thoroughbred ever to race on the American continent. What is more striking, the horse concerned gained his lofty stature in exactly 2 minutes 2 4/5 seconds. Phar Lap.
you got that right. It's the mickey mouse league or the funnyfarm league.Secretariat was the best ever you will never see another horse like him.Comes once every 500 years
cont. 3 Or does it say that if the two red powerhouses ran against each other Secretariat would have beaten ManO'War by 6 lengths? What it tells me is that given that set of circumstances Secretariat would have beaten them all. So who is the superior racehorse here?
cont. 2 Now lets assume that Secretariat ran the same 1-¼ mile distance against Riva Ridge, and Sham. At the finish it was Secretariat winning with a time of 1:59 2/5. Does ManO'War get the nod as a superior horse because he beat a higher level of competition but ran a slower time to Secretariat?
cont. Let’s assume for a minute that ManO'War, Citation, and Count Fleet were all in their prime and ran a race that was 1-¼ miles in distance. At the finish line it was Man-o-war by 2 lengths over Citation with Count Fleet third by a nose. The winning time was 2:00 4/5. This means that as a rule of thumb (1/5 equals a length) Citation’s time was 2:01 1/5.
This is fm the angelfire site by the guy who set it up: In the old west where the Great Plains Indians once thrived, it was said that a tribes greatness was determined by how mighty his enemy was. Well is it true that the level of competition determines a racehorse’s greatness? cont.
Secretariat worked in blazing sprint fractions over the first six furlongs, going out in 45 2-5 seconds and clocking 1:09 1-5 for the first six panels. And all this on a track rated "sloppy."
@rscarbro100 Further, Phar Lap lost 9 of his first 10 races and was out of the money in 8 of those losses. As stated. the weights carried in those losses were embarassing.
who raced against the clock, and Pluck shared the previous best for a mile at Saratoga with a 1:34 4-5 clocking. But Secretariat wasn't through. With Turcotte pulling back on the reins, the big 3-year-old colt, galloped out 1 1/8 miles in 1:47 4-5 to establish another Saratoga mark. Stupendous ran that distance in 1967 in 1:48 1-5. Cont.
"The amazing Secretariat, who only yesterday was put in a match race against his stablemate Riva ridge, set two track records while working in the slop at Saratoga Friday as he prepped for the Whitney Stakes here on August 4. The Triple Crown winner from the Meadow Stable sizzled a mile in 1:34 flat with jockey Ron Turcotte in the saddle to lower the old mark by 4-5 of a second. Roamer,Cont.
Here is the offical World records on dirt from 1 3/16 to 1 5/8 mile. 1:52 2/5, 1:57 4/5, 2:12 2/5, 2:24, 2:38 1/5.Secretariat passing the 1 3/16 post in M.C. 1:51 4/5. Pullin Up in M.C.1 1/4 post in 1:57 4/5. Passed the 1 3/8 mark in Belmont race in 2:11 2/5, 2:24 Flat the 1 1/2 mile still offical record. Clocked passing the 1 5/8 post in 1:37 4/5 'Pullin Up'. Fastest horse from 1 3/16 to 1 5/8 distance in horse racing history. Bring on the "Turtle" Phar Lap Manikato. Need I say more?
@hilocomtoot a deep wide chest housing those lungs, plus that 21-22 lb heart, highly muscled (Charles Hatton said "Secretariat has muscles in his eyebrows) and another said "Secretariat doesn't walk he waddles." Combine it all and as Turcotte said, a smooth ride, like steering a jet plane. His canon bone was a little shorter than average 8" in, good control, less chance of fractures. Sec was thought to have perfect conformation.
They should definitely make a movie on Native Diver also! He broke records way beyond a 2-year-old. His story is incredible. He loved to race, is a Hall of Famer, and buried at the finish line at Hollywood Park. When he died, all mourned. What a beauty.
carlykaiser ... Thanks so much for your posts of Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed. I am not a horse racing "expert" but I do appreciate the beauty of their runs and accomplishments. Such awesome power and talent! (I have to admit, Secretariat is my favorite.) Thanks again!
Umm Secretariat is and always will be in a League of his own. Untouchable and absolutely LETHAL from any position on the track at every distance and any surface. Only Lucien Laurin's mismanagement prevented the greatest racehorse ever from being undefeated.
Secretariat's trainer, said this quote to the press "As God as my witness, she may even be better than Secretariat." Ruffian was undefeated in her first ten races, covering distances from 5.5 furlongs (1.1 km) to 1.5 miles (2.4 km) with an average winning margin of 8 1/3 lengths. She won her maiden race in record time and by 15 lengths
@kenderova yes, Lucien said that after Ruffian's Spinaway I think. She was very fast. She was huge for a filly, magnificent. But, first of all, Lucien was impressed with her time as he shld've been, and the operative word is MAY. Bill Nack, S's biographer said on Talking Horses blog, Blood Horse website that she possibly cld've beaten him going a mile, but with that big engine and his size and power she cldn't have beat him beyond that. Also, Lucien backed off that statement a bit later.
@bon1042 Bon...........I have never understood the kock on Sec with respect to shorter distances e.g. 1 mile. I think the Belmont and Marlboro Cup show he was capable of WR time at that distance. MHO.
@bbmtge I know, but Nack wasn't invoking the Bold Ruler jinx miler myth. He was just saying that it was POSSIBLE Ruffian cld've beaten Sec going a mile, but over distance.... wld never happen.
@manikato75 You always define yourself through your asinine so-called writings. Now that you have lost the debate, you have nothing left except to try and agitate. Does not work here. Good luck in prison.
no one can be compared to Secretariat. not man o' war, affirmed, seattle slew, or any human athlete. i mean Secretariat was an athlete in a WAY different league then anyone! i mean its Secretariat! come one people! dont compare him its not fair to the other athlete.
I'm tellin ya folks. This race was a walk in the park for this horse. He went through the 1 mile marker in 1:34 1/5 time & thats slower than his workouts.
He ran an exact average of 12 seconds a furlong in this race. Was less than that at the 1 1/4 mile mark at !:59 flat. Anyone with common sense would know if he was asked too he would have ran that race is less than 2:24 flat. What time could he run it in his prime as a 4 year old??
@rscarbro100 Yes, that is the perenniel question. Nack said he wld've run as a 4 yr old w/the proverbial refrigerator on his back. Imagine how much stronger he wld've been, assuming full health and nothing wrong. Even Citation's owner/trainer saw him 1st time waiting for infamous Wd Mml to start and said he looked the size of a 4 yr old.
@bon1042 manikato is not mature enough to understand my good lady. He thinks if a Australian track & field guy wins 100 straight times running the 100 meter dash & never ran it under 10 flat could somehow beat Usian Bolt who ran a 100 meter in 9.58. Is this 'KID' living in the land of OZ or what?? He never fails to amaze me. He also thinks if a horse carries 150 lbs in a 2 mile race is great even though he loses coming in 8th place or riding a ship12,000 miles. He makes up his own rules.
@rscarbro100 Just proves two old bats like you 2 dribbling about a sport that u have no idea about,,only a super horse can carry 138 pounds at 4 years over 2 miles ,only a super horse carry 143 in mud last on the turn and still smash his rivals, only a super horse can win at any distance 1200m to 3600m,only a super horse can travel 1200 miles with top weight, cracked hoof, race on dirt for the 1st time, worst ride and still whip yr monkey horses, only a super horse THE RED TERROR
@manikato75 At 4 Sec "wld've run w/proverbial refrigerator on his back." (Bill Nack). Said syndicate greedy to get S to breeding shed, racing needed S, kids were excited, new generation of fans, a shame. Yr sarcasm is offensive, Ms Chenery's father wasted away 5 yrs w/Alzheimer's then died Feb '73 before S's 3 yr old season, needed money for estate taxes.
@bon1042 ,Not the point , Bonny, excuse ,more like it was that sec lost 2 of his last 3 races on dirt was on the way down and the owners didn't want to lose stud value,
Kids getting excited is when they run into the melbourne museum, the first thing they run to is the RED TERROR, and its 70 years later
@manikato75 I've seen you make that remark before that Sec was "on his way down." shows your ignorance of Sec and WHY he lost the 3 races. You're a man who says a loss is a loss, black and white. If you knew what heppened which I have explained in detail you cldn't help but see the light. But you can't and won't. He won his last race 1 5/8mi in 30 deg weather, headwind rain and flurries in deep Canadian grass beating the best 3 and 4 yr olds in Europe and America. Just go away.
@bon1042 If a loss is a loss, someone explain to me why Phar Lap was 1 and 9 in his first 10 races...8 times out of the omney and carrying pathetically light weights.
@bbmtge Manikato is like BigCy And others that hate Secretariat. Their horses excuse were legite for losing no matter how weird it was But Big Red had no reason why he lost And was not that good. Even when he got revenge on Angel Light in the Derby And Onion in the M.C. it makes no difference with them. They won't even acknowledge it. Slew103 over at MOW vs. Secretariat is another one of these diehard Secretariat haters. He & BigCy won't acknowlege Eddie Arcaro Statement Big Red was the best.
@rscarbro100 old man yr 2 old for the internet go play lawn bowls of sumthing, all u do is dribble at home and post dribble remarks,Sec was a champ but greatly overrated
@bbmtge I believe BigCy and Slew103 are one and the same person. Both cannot produce any proof of what they say. They get chilled to the bone when we back-up what we say. Even then they cut down the old time track experts claiming they know more than they do. Everyone knows they are a bunch of chumps trying to defend their favorite horse. If Citation And Phar Lap ran times like Big Red did they would jump off the Empire State building telling about it.
@rscarbro100 I am sure you are correct. As we jave always stated, we have the facts on our side. They are further supported by the fact that we take our time and do research.
There is just one thing in that Belmont I am mad as "H" at. That is Turcotte did not get his rear into gear. If he did the time no doubt would have been 2:22 flat.(smile) Agreed??
Secretariat is the greatest creature to ever be born. God's horse. We will never see anything again on this level. I think of Christ as just another man. Secretariat was the miracle. Man is too vain to think that God would make a horse supernatural and perfect...physically, genetically, temperment, personality, power, confidence and with breathtaking perfect beauty. That's the flaw of man's thinking. A horse that made an entire nation cry watching him race & still watch him 37 yrs. later....
Mine That Bird in the same league as Secretariat? Get real!!! In 2 years it's gonna be Mine That Who?? Secretariat could have wiped up the track with Mine That Bird in his sleep and 3 legs tied behind his back.
this video still has the best showing of this race. You can hear announcer clearly and roar of crowd building, and the fans running onto outside track. Announcere's comments are thrilling as Secretariat rounds the last turn w/steam blasting fm his nostrils... "they're standing and they're cheering because this is his last race, he's in the stretch in a blaze of glory... Secretariat, ladies and gentlemen he's ALL yours... and he's coming to the wire !!!...
Mine That Bird lost the West Virginia Derby. The WEST VIRGINIA DERBY!! What the hell is that? Some nags running at Mountaineer Park. Mine That Bird came in 3rd. Mine That Bird a Secretariat? Get Real.
Secretariat is my god...too supernatural for humans to understand this miracle horse. Most magnificent creature ever born on this Earth...the perfect "10". His greatness will never be matched again. History is proving that.
I saw a picture of the "test mare" appy and baby and drew a charcoal of him and still have it. I thought they named him Speedy but that could have been his barn name. I have often wondered what happened to that colt.
They said that when Secretariat died, that when they did the traditional cutting out of the heart to bury, that his was 2x the size of a normal horse.
My favorite horse, and athlete, of all time...his wins in the Triple Crown were the most emotionally memorable moments ever recorded. A true legendary horse...still holding world records 35 years later...and two races won from last position and still set the records! And the only one he gave the other horses a running start...he beat them all by 31 lengths...incredible! And no other horse can beat 2 of those records and has only tied the third! He was God's gift to man:-) LOVE Secretariat!!
Pls dont draw comparisons. Phar Laps racing prowess in WFA & Handicap was phenomenal (incomparable to todays standards). 1930 Cup Week, he raced & won all 4 major WFA or Handicap races setting either a race or track record for each. He covered a staggering 5.5 miles that week including the Melbourne Cup (2 miles) carrying 62.5 kg. He won against some of Americas best in the ACH, racing on dirt for the 1st time to set a track record while carrying a hoof injury & 58.5 kg.
@swanningaround Ruffian !Secretariat's trainer, said this quote to the press "As God as my witness, she may even be better than Secretariat." @manikato75 I don't agree. However, for me, the greatest horse of recent times was Colin. Unlike Phar Lap and Secretariat, no horse could beat him. For me, th best horse of the 20th century was Dan Patch, but he was not a thoroughbred.
@swanningaround ,i think Ribot was the same no one could beat him,not sure if u know the Phar Lap story,he was that good that they were forced to change the rules and handicapp him even on wfa races, which in turn forced Phar lap's owner to race him in the northern Hemiphere
@manikato75 I'm sure that Phar Lap was good. But you have to remember that Australians tend to oversell their horses. Take Manikato that you are named after. He wasa good horse, but you have to remember that people sent out Rancher as a very hot favorite against him. I know. I was there on the day and back him at 6/1 when I was cleaned out by Kingston Town in the previous race. I saw Kelso race in the US. He was a far better horse than Manikato or Kingston Town. He was also far more popular.
@manikato75 The issue comes down to performance. Key words "would of". Secretariat has the performances, the fractions and the out of sight record times. So "would of" becomes no more than speculation. It's ok to have passion for a horse, but your comment is "over the top".
@bbmtge yeah i agree with u,it comes to key perfomances, which is not done over over 3 or 4 races, key performances is throughout a career not just a 5 week period, looking at USA horses Spectacular Bid is the greatest, even though he lost to Affimed, look at BId's 4 year old ,year !!
not sure if u know the Phar Lap story,he was that good that they were forced to change the rules and handicapp him even on wfa races, which in turn forced Phar lap's owner to race him in the northern Hemiphere
@manikato75 With respect to the Bid; yes, he was one of the greats, but I do not believe he was the greatest. The best 4YO produced in the States was Dr. Fager, hands down. No other horse is close. I disagree with your take on the US TC. There is a reason that only 11 horses have ever won it. In addition, more than a few have had their career ruined or ended by it. History does not judge Sec soley by his TC, though it is easily the greatest series ever run.
@bbmtge ,Bid was undefeated as a 4 year old, pretty hard to be better than that,Bid ran the fastest mile and a half on dirt, going by yr rules his the greatest!!
tc was fantasticby Sec,but 3 races dosent make a career,in football if u have 2 great seasons does that make u the greatest??no,greatest is judged over the career,Its strange that Sec didnt reach the same form after his tc wins, losing 2 of his last 3 races on dirt??
@manikato75 Where did I say anything about a record by Bid? Further, you obviously are not willing to actually discuss the subject and continue with this odd TC line when it has been pointed out that Sec is judged my a lot more than that. If you are stuck on wins and losses, you lose that also. Those who cannot match Sec's times and improvised BSR's say what you say...time doesn't matter. You really need an education in horseracing with the comments you make.
@manikato75 Also, I'm glad you made the comment about Sec's form after the TC. Now you really show your ignorance, and your prejudice. The racing time in the Whitney showed that something was wrong with Sec. As is turned out, he was viral. It was thought, at the time, that his career was over. I guess we are touching on another point you know nothing about. Horses die from these things. Slew almost died from his and I don't think he was ever the same again. So...comes the Marlboro Cup...
@manikato75 Funny, I have your type on here a hundred times or more. Yours is a singular approach, not objective, where you attempt to proclaim Phar Lap as the greatest soley on a portion of his record. When confronted with facts, you play dodgeball or make utterly stupid remarks such as times are "irrelevant". Of course they become irrelevant when the horse you claim is the greatest couldn't run them. So what you wind up with, buried in a thousand useless words is...nothing. But you go...
@manikato75 (con) go a step further and attempt to isolate a portion of Sec record and, agina, ignore the facts presented. I have seen this so many times that it would not surprise me if you have multiple accounts on youtube and simply say the same thing ad nauseam. What you present is carefully comprised contrast, not comparison. An actual direct comparison, if you even understand the word is what each horse did at 2 and 3YO. That is the age both ran. Correct me if I am wrong...
@manikato75 ...Sec lost 5 races at 2 and 3YO...his 2 losses as a 2YO had nothing to do with the horse. Phar Lap lost 11 races as a 2 and 3YO including muliptle consecutive losses. You see, that is an actual comparison. That is where your attempt at logic is thrown back in your face. So...I am finished...keep on with inconsequential remarks, denigrating the TC, world records, etc. Hell, you have even made such a fool of yourself that you said the Belmont wasn't even a race. Too funny...
@bbmtge One more thing...the more I read over your comments, the more you simply repeat the same thing. Again and again and gain. Its' like when given the credibility of the field in the MC and the WR in that race after you claim Sec lost his form after the TC. You just ignore it all and repeat yourself. That is how one loses a debate. Congratulations.
@bbmtge touchy touchy, someone is very defensive,Phar Lap was slow to mature as a 3year old (like you),once he matured he was that dominant that racing officals were forced to handicap him in wfa races, as Phar Lap had won 31 of his last 34 races, his last race in Australia a grade 1, 2mile race PL was force to carry 150 pounds and finish 8th,hence PL owners were fed up with this, and decide to race in the USA, at Agua where he whipped the field in the worlds richest race
@bbmtge ,Phar lap was slow to mature, once he did he was nearly unbeatable,at one stage winning 14 in a row from 6/8 of a mile to 2miles,the 2 mile carrying 138 pounds as a four year,At Agua Phar Lap sailed 12000 miles in his winter coat,to race on dirt for the 1st time, with a cracked hoof and the worst ride ever(watch it),and win easing up with a track record, not only did he conqueror the southern hemisphere but the north as well
@manikato75 I must have missed this post. Conquerred the Northern Hemisphere...lol. Let's see..the idiot states that by winning one race in Mexico he conquers the Northern Hemisphere. As always, you make the most follishc and idiotic statements simply be cuase you hail from the same country as the horse. Phar Lap carried absurdly light weights at 2 and 3 and often was beloew scale at 4 and 5. These are facts. He ran against nobody, has no records, ran slow times. Grade 1 races in...
@bbmtge well he only raced once in the world's richest race in the Nth.Hemisphere and whipped them,i guess u dont know anything about the RED TERROR,his won 32 of his last 35 starts,Sec lost 3 of his last 10,he was that good bookies refused to take bets on him, racing officals changed the rules to try stop him from winning,in WFA races he was forced to carry extra weight when all weights should be the same
Hence how many horses do u know bookies refused bets and rules changes were made??
@manikato75 Sec carried more weight at 2 and 3 than Phar Lap in totality. I will use your logic against you in that you are always slighting Sec with respect to losses. Phar Lap lost 4 consecutive at both 2 and 3 while carrying NOTHING. Face it, you know nothing about horseracing at all. Sec ran against cream of the crop competition, something Phar Lap NEVER did.
@bbmtge how dumb are u ,the most Sec carried as a 3 year old was 126 pounds,Phar Lap 131 pounds !!i know yr stupid but not dumb aswell?!?!?! do u know what WFA is,when all horses carry equal weight according to their age, well the rules were changed so Phar Lap would have to carry extra weight to try stop his dominance, not only did Phar Lap whip every1 in Australia he travelled to the world richest race on dirt at Agua Caliente and whipped them to,did Sec every travel outside North America??
@manikato75 Actually, how STUPID are you. You are fascinated with weight and that idea is taking you down. I have listed the weights carried at 2 by both horses. Soon...I will ist the weights carried at 3 by both hroses and you will learn that in the majority of his races at 3YO, ALSO, Phar Lap carried nothing.
@bbmtge NOT AS STUPID AS U THATS FORSURE,SO DID sec win over 2miles, carry weight over 60 kgs,win outside of Nth.America, did bookies refuse to take bets on sec,or did racing officals change the rules cause of him???
No to all of the above!!!
go learn sumthing about racing u monkey, sec the most overrated horse.

@MrItaliano1900 man shut up secretariat holds the record in italy in spain in france even in mars so we say secretariat is the best because he holds alll records in history , secretariat broke ribots race time puting him at the top of all horses so fuck you please
ferromerocolt44 4 months ago
@ferromerocolt44 but what time are you talking about? There is no record of time. In the gallop the time is not important. Because all depends on the terrain, rain, grass, sand etc. etc.. also depends on how many horses are there. If a horse is unable to leave the group will do a bad time. To be the No.1 .... you need to race against other horses around the world , won the most prestigious competitions. You can not run only in the U.S. , make Hollywood movie and think you're the best ...
MrItaliano1900 4 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 US horses do race against the best and WIN, winning 8 of 16 Dubai World Cups. Europeans TRY to race against the best, but have never won a Breeders Cup or Kentucky Derby. Looks like the European horses are the myopic ones who can't win outside of their home turf.

@haldeman20 the best horses in history are Italian: Ribot and Varenne, I do not care about europe. But the American races are ridiculous.

SECby31 3 months ago

Racehorse
BY LAURA HILLENBRAND
Most Overrated Racehorse:
It took him only two minutes, two and fourfifths seconds, and he didn’t even do it in America.
rscarbro100 1 year ago
@rscarbro100 There appeared in the West
an enormous gelding considered by many experts
--including jockey Eddie Arcaro, New York State Steward Francis Dunne and Marshall Cassidy, who succeeded his father as dean of American racing officials--
as the greatest thoroughbred ever to race on the American continent. What is more striking, the horse concerned gained his lofty stature in exactly 2 minutes 2 4/5 seconds. Phar Lap.

cont. 3 Or does it say that if the two red powerhouses ran against each other Secretariat would have beaten ManO'War by 6 lengths? What it tells me is that given that set of circumstances Secretariat would have beaten them all. So who is the superior racehorse here?
bon1042 1 year ago
cont. 2 Now lets assume that Secretariat ran the same 1-¼ mile distance against Riva Ridge, and Sham. At the finish it was Secretariat winning with a time of 1:59 2/5. Does ManO'War get the nod as a superior horse because he beat a higher level of competition but ran a slower time to Secretariat?
bon1042 1 year ago

Umm Secretariat is and always will be in a League of his own. Untouchable and absolutely LETHAL from any position on the track at every distance and any surface. Only Lucien Laurin's mismanagement prevented the greatest racehorse ever from being undefeated.
RAV52 1 year ago 3
Secretariat's trainer, said this quote to the press "As God as my witness, she may even be better than Secretariat." Ruffian was undefeated in her first ten races, covering distances from 5.5 furlongs (1.1 km) to 1.5 miles (2.4 km) with an average winning margin of 8 1/3 lengths. She won her maiden race in record time and by 15 lengths
kenderova 1 year ago

What time could he run it in his prime as a 4 year old??
rscarbro100 2 years ago
@rscarbro100 Yes, that is the perenniel question. Nack said he wld've run as a 4 yr old w/the proverbial refrigerator on his back. Imagine how much stronger he wld've been, assuming full health and nothing wrong. Even Citation's owner/trainer saw him 1st time waiting for infamous Wd Mml to start and said he looked the size of a 4 yr old.

@manikato75 what is your point?? Is there one.
bon1042 1 year ago
@bon1042 manikato is not mature enough to understand my good lady. He thinks if a Australian track & field guy wins 100 straight times running the 100 meter dash & never ran it under 10 flat could somehow beat Usian Bolt who ran a 100 meter in 9.58. Is this 'KID' living in the land of OZ or what?? He never fails to amaze me. He also thinks if a horse carries 150 lbs in a 2 mile race is great even though he loses coming in 8th place or riding a ship12,000 miles. He makes up his own rules.
rscarbro100 1 year ago

@bon1042 ,Not the point , Bonny, excuse ,more like it was that sec lost 2 of his last 3 races on dirt was on the way down and the owners didn't want to lose stud value,
Kids getting excited is when they run into the melbourne museum, the first thing they run to is the RED TERROR, and its 70 years later
manikato75 1 year ago

A horse that made an entire nation cry watching him race & still watch him 37 yrs. later....

@swanningaround Ruffian !Secretariat's trainer, said this quote to the press "As God as my witness, she may even be better than Secretariat." Ruffian was undefeated in her first ten races, covering distances from 5.5 furlongs (1.1 km) to 1.5 miles (2.4 km) with an average winning margin of 8 1/3 lengths. She won her maiden race in record time and by 15 lengths

manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 I don't agree. However, for me, the greatest horse of recent times was Colin. Unlike Phar Lap and Secretariat, no horse could beat him. For me, th best horse of the 20th century was Dan Patch, but he was not a thoroughbred.
swanningaround 1 year ago
@swanningaround ,i think Ribot was the same no one could beat him,not sure if u know the Phar Lap story,he was that good that they were forced to change the rules and handicapp him even on wfa races, which in turn forced Phar lap's owner to race him in the northern Hemiphere
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 I'm sure that Phar Lap was good. But you have to remember that Australians tend to oversell their horses. Take Manikato that you are named after. He wasa good horse, but you have to remember that people sent out Rancher as a very hot favorite against him. I know. I was there on the day and back him at 6/1 when I was cleaned out by Kingston Town in the previous race. I saw Kelso race in the US. He was a far better horse than Manikato or Kingston Town. He was also far more popular.
swanningaround 1 year ago
@manikato75 The issue comes down to performance. Key words "would of". Secretariat has the performances, the fractions and the out of sight record times. So "would of" becomes no more than speculation. It's ok to have passion for a horse, but your comment is "over the top".
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge well said....
bon1042 1 year ago
@bbmtge yeah i agree with u,it comes to key perfomances, which is not done over over 3 or 4 races, key performances is throughout a career not just a 5 week period, looking at USA horses Spectacular Bid is the greatest, even though he lost to Affimed, look at BId's 4 year old ,year !!
not sure if u know the Phar Lap story,he was that good that they were forced to change the rules and handicapp him even on wfa races, which in turn forced Phar lap's owner to race him in the northern Hemiphere
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 With respect to the Bid; yes, he was one of the greats, but I do not believe he was the greatest. The best 4YO produced in the States was Dr. Fager, hands down. No other horse is close. I disagree with your take on the US TC. There is a reason that only 11 horses have ever won it. In addition, more than a few have had their career ruined or ended by it. History does not judge Sec soley by his TC, though it is easily the greatest series ever run.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge ,Bid was undefeated as a 4 year old, pretty hard to be better than that,Bid ran the fastest mile and a half on dirt, going by yr rules his the greatest!!
tc was fantasticby Sec,but 3 races dosent make a career,in football if u have 2 great seasons does that make u the greatest??no,greatest is judged over the career,Its strange that Sec didnt reach the same form after his tc wins, losing 2 of his last 3 races on dirt??
manikato75 1 year ago
@bbmtge sorry Bid's world record on dirt was at 1 1/4 mile not 1 1/2
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Where did I say anything about a record by Bid? Further, you obviously are not willing to actually discuss the subject and continue with this odd TC line when it has been pointed out that Sec is judged my a lot more than that. If you are stuck on wins and losses, you lose that also. Those who cannot match Sec's times and improvised BSR's say what you say...time doesn't matter. You really need an education in horseracing with the comments you make.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@manikato75 Also, I'm glad you made the comment about Sec's form after the TC. Now you really show your ignorance, and your prejudice. The racing time in the Whitney showed that something was wrong with Sec. As is turned out, he was viral. It was thought, at the time, that his career was over. I guess we are touching on another point you know nothing about. Horses die from these things. Slew almost died from his and I don't think he was ever the same again. So...comes the Marlboro Cup...
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge ,form after tc,Sec lost 2 of his last 3 races on dirt,Phar Lap lost 3 of his last 34????
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Funny, I have your type on here a hundred times or more. Yours is a singular approach, not objective, where you attempt to proclaim Phar Lap as the greatest soley on a portion of his record. When confronted with facts, you play dodgeball or make utterly stupid remarks such as times are "irrelevant". Of course they become irrelevant when the horse you claim is the greatest couldn't run them. So what you wind up with, buried in a thousand useless words is...nothing. But you go...
bbmtge 1 year ago
@manikato75 (con) go a step further and attempt to isolate a portion of Sec record and, agina, ignore the facts presented. I have seen this so many times that it would not surprise me if you have multiple accounts on youtube and simply say the same thing ad nauseam. What you present is carefully comprised contrast, not comparison. An actual direct comparison, if you even understand the word is what each horse did at 2 and 3YO. That is the age both ran. Correct me if I am wrong...
bbmtge 1 year ago
@manikato75 ...Sec lost 5 races at 2 and 3YO...his 2 losses as a 2YO had nothing to do with the horse. Phar Lap lost 11 races as a 2 and 3YO including muliptle consecutive losses. You see, that is an actual comparison. That is where your attempt at logic is thrown back in your face. So...I am finished...keep on with inconsequential remarks, denigrating the TC, world records, etc. Hell, you have even made such a fool of yourself that you said the Belmont wasn't even a race. Too funny...
bbmtge 1 year ago
@manikato75 So...have fun. Stay with contrast, twisiting and illogic. It suits someone like you; of very limited mentality.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge One more thing...the more I read over your comments, the more you simply repeat the same thing. Again and again and gain. Its' like when given the credibility of the field in the MC and the WR in that race after you claim Sec lost his form after the TC. You just ignore it all and repeat yourself. That is how one loses a debate. Congratulations.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge touchy touchy, someone is very defensive,Phar Lap was slow to mature as a 3year old (like you),once he matured he was that dominant that racing officals were forced to handicap him in wfa races, as Phar Lap had won 31 of his last 34 races, his last race in Australia a grade 1, 2mile race PL was force to carry 150 pounds and finish 8th,hence PL owners were fed up with this, and decide to race in the USA, at Agua where he whipped the field in the worlds richest race
go learn sumthing!!
manikato75 1 year ago
@bbmtge ,Phar lap was slow to mature, once he did he was nearly unbeatable,at one stage winning 14 in a row from 6/8 of a mile to 2miles,the 2 mile carrying 138 pounds as a four year,At Agua Phar Lap sailed 12000 miles in his winter coat,to race on dirt for the 1st time, with a cracked hoof and the worst ride ever(watch it),and win easing up with a track record, not only did he conqueror the southern hemisphere but the north as well
go learn sumthing about horse racing!!
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 I must have missed this post. Conquerred the Northern Hemisphere...lol. Let's see..the idiot states that by winning one race in Mexico he conquers the Northern Hemisphere. As always, you make the most follishc and idiotic statements simply be cuase you hail from the same country as the horse. Phar Lap carried absurdly light weights at 2 and 3 and often was beloew scale at 4 and 5. These are facts. He ran against nobody, has no records, ran slow times. Grade 1 races in...
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge well he only raced once in the world's richest race in the Nth.Hemisphere and whipped them,i guess u dont know anything about the RED TERROR,his won 32 of his last 35 starts,Sec lost 3 of his last 10,he was that good bookies refused to take bets on him, racing officals changed the rules to try stop him from winning,in WFA races he was forced to carry extra weight when all weights should be the same
Hence how many horses do u know bookies refused bets and rules changes were made??
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Sec carried more weight at 2 and 3 than Phar Lap in totality. I will use your logic against you in that you are always slighting Sec with respect to losses. Phar Lap lost 4 consecutive at both 2 and 3 while carrying NOTHING. Face it, you know nothing about horseracing at all. Sec ran against cream of the crop competition, something Phar Lap NEVER did.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge how dumb are u ,the most Sec carried as a 3 year old was 126 pounds,Phar Lap 131 pounds !!i know yr stupid but not dumb aswell?!?!?! do u know what WFA is,when all horses carry equal weight according to their age, well the rules were changed so Phar Lap would have to carry extra weight to try stop his dominance, not only did Phar Lap whip every1 in Australia he travelled to the world richest race on dirt at Agua Caliente and whipped them to,did Sec every travel outside North America??
manikato75 1 year ago
@manikato75 Actually, how STUPID are you. You are fascinated with weight and that idea is taking you down. I have listed the weights carried at 2 by both horses. Soon...I will ist the weights carried at 3 by both hroses and you will learn that in the majority of his races at 3YO, ALSO, Phar Lap carried nothing.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge NOT AS STUPID AS U THATS FORSURE,SO DID sec win over 2miles, carry weight over 60 kgs,win outside of Nth.America, did bookies refuse to take bets on sec,or did racing officals change the rules cause of him???
