In those days, did women actually show off their cleavage like in 'The Tudors' and in 'The Other Boleyn Girl' or did they dress more like this? What did they actually wear in real life?
@ItsMoriashkiBitches 'The Tudors' and 'The Other Boleyn Girl' have taken certain liberties with history. These portrayals of this epic period say a great deal more about us than about them. A dose of titillation - and a sexed up story line - is always helpful for the ratings.
As for the dress of the period, think Reformation.
The funny thing is that the original story is far from boring. Today's renditions tend to leave out the parts that would make it truly interesting and exciting.
@videogamer514 it's just like today's context where everybody steered clear when the boss is pissed but unfortunately, back then, monarchs had the power to vent their anger on any poor unwitting soul. So yes, kneel and keep your head low!
@videogamer514 Elizabeth required everyone around her to kneel until she gave them leave to stand. Clearly if she's pissed off she won't do that! She also insisted that everyone stands if she is standing, problem was she used to stand for hours and hours at a time...
@videogamer514 Probably not, but it was a wise action to avoid being bollocked further I imagine... and it has great dramatic effect in this scene. :)
@videogamer514 If you didn't want to lose your head yes. You have to show respect at all times. If your boss is pissed off, what do you do? Tell them off? Nope you stand clear. When a monarch is pissed, back then, if you showed any sign of disrespect it could be considered treason and they had the right to take out their fury as they saw fit.
An anger and temper that you would never want to fan, he should have know not to twist her words for his benefit, totally serves him right. Don't mess with the red head let along a sovereign prince at that.
To see them all fall to their knees like a row of dominoes is just so funny!! She knew her power, and she knew how to use it! The spanish ambassador was so stupid, to think that she would just marry a man because they wanted her to- she sure showed them who wore the pants in the kingdom!
that asshole was asking for it, though. How dare you insist to a queen? I suppose he figured that *surely* she must yield to his masculine sense; after all, she *is* but a *woman*...
She already gave him a warning at 0:46 (He knows how to listen), maybe out of politeness... and then, when he continue to persist & twist her words, that really ticked her off!!! In a way, he was disrespecting her...
I suspect from his POV she is only a 'mere woman' and therefore doesn't know her own mind ... so of course it's his responsibility and duty to tell her what 'her own mind' consists of.
Both of her parents, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, were quite temperamental. Catherine of Aragon (mother of Mary I) was stubborn but not bad tempered, while Jane Seymour (mother of Edward VI) was very accommodating and docile. In this sense, out of all Henry's children, it is not surprising that Elizabeth was regarded as the 'most Tudor". (Mary and Edward took after their mothers more than their father).
That guy is a pain in the ass: apparently cannot hear, or take the lady literally. And Dudley was smug as hell, thinking he had a permanent place in the Queen's boudoir. That was Dudley's own wife, lady in waiting, who stormed off at the end.
Do you think Amy died of her breast cancer, committed suicide, was murdered, or accidentally fell down the stairs? I know Dudley was cleared but one still wonders...
Good question about diagnosis...I know I have read in several accounts (and it's mentioned in the Elizabeth R series) that Amy was suffering from a lump in her breast. I assumed it was cancer, but as you say, how could they officially diagnosis that?

Of course she has no intention of marrying him, come on in this series Philip looks like Santa on steroids!
In 1559 Philip at least looked like a man, couldn't they find a man to play him and not a teddy bear?

Question: Was it a requirement that every time a monarch was pissed off everyone around he or she had to kneel?

Her bark was worse than her bite. Displeasure rarely meant more than a temporary banishment from court, or at worst, a stay in the Tower.
