What really sucks is when you have to chain the whole drillstring out of the hole by hand as when there's a fishing tool on the end, (old school). Some of you know what I mean..
hey can someone tell me what the difference between a roughneck and a iron roughneck is. and what is a kelly? and why do companies insist on two pairs of tongs??
a roughneck is drilling rig worker...or also a handy laundry bin found at walmart.....
an iron roughneck is a piece of equipment that ...makes up and breaks out pipe....instead of using tongs....(depending on what kinda iron roughneckk you got) a kelly...is well i dont know how to explain it..its a bushing that fits in the rotary table and rotates, and makes hole..the opposite of a kelly would be a topdrive....but hell dont listen to me... i dont even work on a rig.
You need two tongs when the drill string (all of the pipes connected and run into the ground) weighs less than a certain amount.
You need two because one acts as a back up and the other acts as the break out/make up tong. If you only had one tong, when the driller pulled on your chain/cable to loosen/tighten the connection, the entire string would spin and it would not thread/unthread.
After you get past a certain weight the chainhand can lock the floor instead of using his tongs.
Sometimes the company man will insist on two tongs for different tasks in order to properly tighten something or to protect the equipment being put downhole.
im sorry to hear about that , from NJ thats why but how is the employment so far?I mean, is it still possible to get a job after i graduate with a petroleum engineer degree?
@eguiat maybe not.... maybe yes... but one things for sure...when you do get a job with that degree..for that time you hold that job youll be makin the big big bucks!
(i work on a rig but want to get a pet. eng degree like yourself.....good move on your part)
Yeah because every1 has worked harder, bigger rigs bigger tongs, man some people talk shit, we all do the same job, some have smaller rigs and some have it easier so the fuck what, we all brothers of the iron man fuck that shit talkin crap. good work to all
Really is that what you think jealous listen here you little shit the fact is im a real roughneck i dont need none of that shit from you i know im fucking good and i get payed more then enough i just still hold true to what the true meaning of roughneck is rough
to all the guys out there not like these guys and know what roughnecking actually is can we say these guys are not roughnecks but only softnecks throw some tongs you wimps
Dam i thot this video was going to actually show something worth watching..until i saw three worms stabbing heavy weight and the other two hands over there not paying attention to whats going on showin off for the camera..wow...five guys on the floor..one driller and the derrick man..all those hands and they still use those power tongs..
Thats retarded. Five guys on the rig floor. There should be three and it's even worse that they use an iron roughneck. You could have 3, 145 pound 16 year olds doing that.
buddy i worked at NABORS DRILLING USA for 2 straight years in the n. tx division...i could care less if ur a safety man, im good friends with alot of safety people, there no dif. from any other hand ive met...are u suspost to be special?
Pipe racking systems are quicker if used right. you can trip up to 60 stands per minute with Varco PRS. The part that take all the time is running the blocks. While TIH, the PRS and Iron Roughneck will pick up a stand, stab it, screw it in and torque it before the elevators get to the top!
On the service double I worked on (a Ideco) We could trip right at 2.5 stands a min. But that was crazy fast and crazy dangerous. With 2 7/8ths production pipe. So baby pipe more or less..I could trip 3.5 inch drill pipe pretty fast tho.
They have racking arms, hydraulically operated, but they are mostly used on offshore rigs. They're nice when they work, just like "iron roughnecks" however they always seem to be broken.
yeah but. The direction the oilfield is going (hell even us in the rig up departments know this) Eventually we're just going to have our hands held by some 'college educated' dimwit who doesnt know shit about how things work, while we try to do our jobs.

if they had robots to do all the work, us folks that work in the patch wouldnt have jobs :) Nice vid bud

Is there any robot that can do all this for you? I think there is and why I don't see it in any drilling videos?
OddLooking 4 years ago
There are many different aspects of drilling that can be automated, but for land rigs - they would probably cost ineffective.
krobusek 4 years ago
@krobusek unless you work on a super single then its 85% done
