First off, he is alive and well in Deep Gap, NC, USA. Secondly, how does he do it? He is one of the best flat-pickers ever. I think of Doc as the Louis Armstrong of flat-picking guitar. There are faster players, more innovative players (maybe), more technically astute player (but that can never be by much, but he is the best. Simply the best. I selfishly wish he was more active (he's retired) and played more gigs.
Saw DOc and Merle once and Doc and Michael Coleman once; both shows absolutely astounding. Met both Doc and Merle during breaks, absolutely nice people. They will leave a rather large hole in music when Doc goes to his reward.
I first saw Doc in 1962/63 on a tv show called Hottenanny and he played Deep River Blues. He absolutely changed the way I look at guitar playing and players.
Check out the swedish acoustic group Piedmont Project. They keep the East Coast blues alive and have a great fingerpicker! Doc is their main inspiration!

This guitar is Doc's first Gallagher, "Ole Hoss" and I have played it! Not like Doc, but played it nonetheless.

There aren't too many flattop pickers out there today who can touch ole Doc. He's so smooth with his runs even at 90!
