Actually, that's Ryuk you're thinking about (originally going to have Ryuk look like a handsome rock star type, but didn't want Ryuk's looks to distract people from Light, so they changed it to something more monster like).

However, L's initial design is shown in Death Note Vol. 13, and To be honest, I definitely prefer the way he is now. It's just so weird seeing him without his big eyes and very dark eyebags! XD
