@GratefulVince yeah me too, that was just the thing that popped into my head to say at the time, in defence of my hero, john winston lennon. i suppose a better thing to say wud be you have ta feel what he sang about to get it, and it happens that many people felt what his music was about. and since people exhault musicians who seem to understand and feel their pain, hence the "hero worship about this guy" the person whom i replied to obiously doesnt share the same feelings that lennon fans do.
I saw this the night it was broadcast. I think it was a Monday. (I'm serious). quite electrifying at the time to see him on anything. man, that was a long, long time ago. god bless him.
John was working with Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and members of the Weather Underground. FBI already had him in COINTELPRO. They were banning him out of the US to try and stop his Anti-Vietnam activity here in the states. Two best bands ever- Doors and Beatles
@gamerofmanytrades Dunkin' Donuts in the 80's and 90's had a series where a store owner would wake up in the middle of the night and shuffle off to work murmuring "Time to make the donuts". John Lennon's "Time to make an album" reminded me of that!
no black music? huh? surely even the biggest twat couldn't deny that black people from america ,to jamaica, to brazil and beyond not only invented the very foundations for all modern popular music, but for decades have been its greatest innovators
and war, slavery, exploitation, religious repression, imperialism... yeah, great things. let's all judge "different races" by all their legacies, not just the chosen few, you fucking racist.
At around 8.10, why does the interviewer think that John doesn't understand his story about the woman who wanted a 'filter' to block out the southern states accent? John quite clearly laughed about it. ??
@HRHdianolivier - For me Paul was the best looking, followed by George than John (esp. during his later years) and finally Ringo although they were all good looking.
Interesting view of Lennon. Sharp as ever, John seems somewhat wounded, a little more vulnerable and even humble in this interview. It's nice to see it after all the stuff we've seen focusing on a more bitter side of the man.
It's a good thing for Tom Snyder too, I don't think many stars would be so patient being interrogated by such a cynical and caustic turd as this interviewer could be.
@Stackpot Yeah, he was somewhat pompous. Overall his interviews were entertaining and he had good guests. A side note is that when I was a kid he was a news anchorman on our LA NBC affilite tv station. He died in the early 80's I think.
What a horrible interviewer! If he would just allow Lennon some time to talk, it could have been very interesting. He keeps cutting him off, and you can see that Lennon is put off by it. Dreadful!

@matukonyc Yoko knew John's Achilles heel though - his departed mother. Yoko simply took her place. She referred to herself as "Mother" when speaking to him and it melted John into putty that she could mold and control. John lost his mother tragically at 14 and never really got over it. Yoko knew that and filled the void. John was strong but it was the 14-year-old boy inside that Yoko manipulated.

Do you notice how relaxed John looks when he's being interviewed alone, without Yoko? She always made him jump through hoops. She made him push her agenda and voice her opinions in interviews when she was sitting right there. He looked nervous and afraid to step on her toe. But this interview shows a relaxed, real John.
@migsly , you're right! yoko was a manipulative fucking control freak! I felt so sorry for John. Too bad he had that mother trip he was on. He let yoko fuck over his life. And yes, she was a huge reason the Beatles broke up! If yoko encouraged John to really make a go at it the beatles at least in my opinion would have produced some great stuff. Sad to say this wasn't to be. Truman Capote called John a real sweetheart, and yoko a dragon lady! Capote was nobody's fool! He felt bad for John!
@migsly that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. There are many interviews with Yoko there that John was relaxed. Don't project your dislike of Yoko onto him.
1. John was his own man BEFORE he met Yoko. Then he dwindled into a little vulnerable boy afraid to offend "mommy."
2. John did not choose Yoko. Yoko chose him. Her parasitic persistence + the drugs + John's achilles heel = John & Yoko.
3. He became heavily addicted to cocaine AFTER he met Yoko. It was at its worst at the time of his death. If the bullets hadn't killed him, the drugs would have.
@migsly You see lots of Julian here in this interview. Julian was the man John could never be. I enjoy John without Yoko. Yoko was the cougar, and John was her prey. Do you think John could like ties and coffee mugs in his image, as Yoko has so "lovingly" done?
wow he is sooo smart, when Tom was talking about other groups sending political messages, john finishd his response and then, like, slammed him with "what groups are you talking about?" and he was like...oh shit....think fast think fast......LMAO
HAHAHAAH!!! omg i had to pause the video i was laughing so hard when he said how Paul was the cute one and girls would go 'hoo hooo'!!! thats like the highlight of my LIFE.....lmao!!!
but paul's not the only cute one, i mean, look in the mirror, john.....
my dad told me back when this happened he had a Mark David Chapman and a John Lennon in his town...both with similar characteristcs strangely too...(No Joke dont downgrade me either cuz i really dgaf)
an angry response is natural, but let's aim toward something aka loving and understanding. john could not save the world, and he had his own life to life, including objectives that served his interests (breaking up the beatles, primal therapy, etc). a free society will fail to police, or control, all things, just as it sacrifices some in nature. understanding might be one response to changing nature.
people who overcome discouragement always make it. working class, upper class, it doesn't matter. discouragement is the enemy; its the "I can't" whispering in our ears.
I just wanted to say that I saw the Beatles in concert when was 8 or 9 and it changed my life and rest of the world around me. Nothing to this day comes close to the impact that band had on the world. I don't get to this site all that much, but need to more often I suppose, since it is mine. Love and Pieces of it.
This was back in the pre-cable, pre internet and pre MTV days. A Beatle being interviwed on the TV! I remember watching this when I was in elementary school.
This looks about 1975. He did an interview with WHispering Bob Harris on Whistle test at roughly the same time. He also released his fabulous Rock and Roll album.....PLayed Stand by me and Slipping and Sliding when he appeared on Whistle Test. I remember it well. I was nuts about the man........

@migsly I don't see that at all. Nobody ever told John Lennon what to do. his personality wouldn't stand for it.

@migsly are you kdding me?-give it a rest already

@migsly that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. There are many interviews with Yoko there that John was relaxed. Don't project your dislike of Yoko onto him.
Unclecookoo 1 year ago 2
@migsly
That's why the "Let It Be' sessions were hell.
She made him unnessecarely hung up about the 'moptop'years,yet these days 'appreciates' those 'lesser' years.
Conned John into believing he could walk the streets of N Y without protection,which was deemed uncool and unnessecary."They all love us here"
Still...hats off to to most successful groupie in the history of the world.
PAULLONDEN 1 year ago
@migsly John was John Lennon decades before he met Yoko... don't underestimate him. He was always in complete control.

@migsly
Rubbish..John was his own man, and he chose Yoko and needed her...he nearly died as a junkie before they got together...
jdw1980 1 year ago
@jdw1980
If the bullets hadn't killed him, the drugs would have.
migsly 1 year ago
@migsly I think that's only because she challenged him. Fact, you would not be hearing John Lennon speaking like this if it was not for her.
the80ees 1 year ago
@the80ees Challenged him?? She destroyed him.
What you see in this interview is the real John Lennon. What you see in interviews with Yoko with him is NOT the real John Lennon.
migsly 1 year ago
@migsly You see lots of Julian here in this interview. Julian was the man John could never be. I enjoy John without Yoko. Yoko was the cougar, and John was her prey. Do you think John could like ties and coffee mugs in his image, as Yoko has so "lovingly" done?

subliminal messages?
MDC said that voices in the btls music told him to kill lennon,hmmmm?
lennon was playing with a force that he could not control,and that had no loyalty or love for him.may his end be according to his works.

This interview was recorded in 1975 according to wikipedia entry on Tom Synder. BTW He died in 2007

wow he is sooo smart, when Tom was talking about other groups sending political messages, john finishd his response and then, like, slammed him with "what groups are you talking about?" and he was like...oh shit....think fast think fast......LMAO

@mvp91593 ...MDC was a mind-controlled assassin. Hate the people and the process and the agenda behind that.
Then when you've stopped steaming, remember John's words:
"Love is the answer -- and you know that, for sure.

@mvp91593 .....don't even mention that fucks name my man .....thats why the monster murdered John , to attain his fame !
mazyrun09 1 year ago
@mvp91593
an angry response is natural, but let's aim toward something aka loving and understanding. john could not save the world, and he had his own life to life, including objectives that served his interests (breaking up the beatles, primal therapy, etc). a free society will fail to police, or control, all things, just as it sacrifices some in nature. understanding might be one response to changing nature.

people who overcome discouragement always make it. working class, upper class, it doesn't matter. discouragement is the enemy; its the "I can't" whispering in our ears.

No. It HAS to be 1970 or later. Probably '70, '71. Why on earth would you say 67 or 68?

This looks about 1975. He did an interview with WHispering Bob Harris on Whistle test at roughly the same time. He also released his fabulous Rock and Roll album.....PLayed Stand by me and Slipping and Sliding when he appeared on Whistle Test. I remember it well. I was nuts about the man........
