of Manos Hadjidakis that is playing from 0:00 to 0:20 ? Then it cross-fades to

Symphony No.3 (Langsam. Ruhevoll. Empfunden) - Gustav Mahler as the

descriptions says. I searched trough the web but I can't find anything.

    Thanks in advance fellows...

  • 6:39-6:41= The NBC Commentator said: ''You're looking at euros...the god of love''

We all know that EROS was the name of the Greek God of Love

and that EUROS is the actual currency all over Europe, except in the U.K.

Just click on the CC feature, and the closed captioning will be displayed under the image of the video, and will realize of that mistake.

One of the best nation in Europe & in the World. Greece, I like to say thank you for everything in life in which we have. Always keep the Olympics to the future & everyone the that is Greek will know that their country, Greece, will be always special. Go USA at Olympics. Good to know something about Greece. YAY!!!!!!

  • What an incredible performance!!!! A journey into art, history, culture, philosophy, human history and the list is endless. As for you Mr. Dimitri Papaioannou, what can be said? You are amongst the blessed people who have been inspired to create beauty. Let it be said that the beauty of culture can elevate the peoples into higher level of existence, May you always be enthused. Enthusiasm = en theos = In God. (Greek) Peace and friendship to all humanity.

  • The music theme from 0:01 to 00:21 its a classical

version of Manos Hadjidakis' "Northern Star".

Anyone knows where could I find that version?

    Thanks in advance fellows!

  • We remember that ceremony that made us feel proud to be greeks! We often hear the phrases.. "greeks were the first to..." or "..it started thousands years ago in greece..".May all schools in every country teach just some of the ideas Greece brought to the world!

Now,almost 6 years later,we suffer by the oikonomic crisis (both are greek words!) and we try to find ourselves...

Let's say that we recovered from worse situations in the past...so we will make it again...

  • Gracias Grecia and you really wonder how do the know all that stuff... εμείς σας...

  • Best ceremony ever.

  • Wow good job neighbor! I can watch this forever, it just describes the Greece I've been! Love from Turkey!

You just can't be rich while you and or your neighbour is poor-minded...

  • magical

  • 我是中国人我喜欢希腊文化.

I am a Chinese, I like the Greek culture.

  • Impossible not to feel goosebumps while watching this. I applaud Greece for crafting such a beautiful ceremony.

  • oye en español que se significa todo lo que dice

  • this is the real greece....you can't imagine how proud i am to be greek....

  • oh god that cube walk i wouldn't do for ANY offer.

  • I woke with this marble head in my hands;

It exhausts my elbows and I don't know where to put it down.

It was falling into the dream as I was coming out of the dream

So our life became one and it will be very difficult for it to separate again.

    (George Seferis, Mythistorema)

  • Very awesome and thought provoking.

  • wow the commentary is irritating. the woman needs to be quiet. sounds like somebody out of a trailer park.

  • To me, this is the most spectacular, symbolic, and elegant Olympic ceremony. Ever. A Metaphoric interpretation of the Greek place in history - and of all men.

  • Well built comment.

  • what is the title of that classical music? Anyone know?

  • I believe it is from Mahler's third symphony.

  • The info box on the right may be the answer to your question.

  • It's the final movement ("What Love Tells Me") from Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony. Probably the single greatest, most beautiful, and most uplifting piece of music ever written. What better way to express celebration of humanity than this music.

  • Thnx for the culture Greeks, that's the world's most important treasure!!

    Respect!!!

  • Do they have this video somewhere without the commentary? It's really disruptive sometimes.

  • While I agree with everyone about the commentary, most of the networks around the world do this during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. They each get a pamphlet explaining what everything symbolizes. That's why you'll note the Canadian coverage has very similar commentary. Same with BBC. The people at the Ceremonies actually have the pamphlets, or versions of them, that explain everything. The announcers are just trying to make everything clear for the viewers. But yes it's a bit annoying.

  • oh my god why the american have to explain everything....???

  • No need to be racist about it, lol it's annoying in the US too.

  • because they don't know anything......

  • The people watching don't know anything, so everything have to be explained.

  • @nacht89: Because not everybody understands everything what is shown. I think that's pretty obvious.

  • but why coment on everything.?..it breaks the charm of the all thing.

  • I just commented you on this... like seconds ago. I never saw this comment. d(:

  • y r we discussing politics ,isn't this beautiful enough

Olympics is about being united as one earth we are not separate .

what you are discussing right now is what the people of olympics did not want

  • This is where everything begun in this era.....

  • Could you anyone tell me what the music is...?

I just remember a word "Langsam" seen on TV...

but I can't find this music such as a name of langsam; I think that is just adjective word of Deutsch Symphony.

  • Langsam means slow in German. The music is the final movement ("What Love Tells Me") from Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony.

  • One of the greatest greatest greatest greatest pieces EVER EVER EVER EVER written

  • although he dropped the titles in later

  • You can't understand? If Greeks didn't existed probably internet didn't existed too.Everything r from Maths and Maths= Ancient Greece. Or I am doing a mistake now, Maths= America? I appreciate all the things America did for all the world but you can start to appreciate the other countries too and don't telling everywhere what the Americans r the best. Every country have her history and the better idea is to have admiration for that.

  • i hope many people would not be so obstinates and would speak like you...thx you dont hide and express your true ..feellings ,not like others that hide the truth...HELLAS4EVER

  • Thanks :)

  • @FranGirl44 Yar, plus the Greek boys are hung and sexy :D

  • .and a respect to those magnificent people in those ancient times ,our forfathers, that gave us the right place of ourselves, among the vastness of the universe....if u canot grasp the concept you miss the point completely......do not judge this as a show..... this is a testimony of respect from the modern Greeks to the achievements of their fathers....go along with the magnificense of the Idea ,that gave sciense, art, theatre, philosophy, and so many others....

  • the very first civilization that began ,thinking, as a human characteristic of existence .the general todays society of logic ,that we all live in ,that vanished the "ape" from within us once and for all....so how can you minimise the purpose since it is so universal,so humanistic and so graceful ,with comments around nations, or i like or dislike a show..... this video is a hymn for Human Perception and Logic.....

  • first of all this video and part of the ceremony is adreesing to alla of us .....is showing the magnificense of the human mind.....how ideas evolved to be sciense, how we found proof to prove our theories, how rear but also powerful and glorious is the human mind....... the greek civilization was the first ever to spiritialize the human mind, and find there the meaning and the puropse of life and they were the first to place Gods as equals to us ,with humanistic characteristics.....

  • It's also hilarious reading all these ANTI-American comments on AMERICAN social websites such as youtube, facebook, myspace, tweet! Yeah it's kind of silly!

  • This is the internet, why am I supposed to care what anyone says on the internet? Plus it';s a little silly to be anti-American on the internet, since the internet is an American product, no to mention this AMERICAN website, oh and your computer probably is American, Microsoft Windows? Intel or Oracle probably designed the chip in your computer, not bad for uneducated Americans, but you sure do love your AMERICAN products! Idiots! I

  • you are so suck, all the Physics start from Greece, america???whats is that?? 500years??no history no people!!!

Greece is the Ancient Coutnry in the world, and China too

  • You can't be serious? America is the melting pot of the world. We share the cultures of everyone who comes here. It's a land that has been blessed by Greek history, Chinese innovation, Japanese art, Russian delicacy and so on. But I guess close minded STUPIDITY is something we all have in common.

  • yeah sure and all that in one person= george bush, and just remind me how you treated foreign immigrants at beginnig of 20th century

  • ...You're going to invoke my countries history from a hundred or so years ago? Are you implying that your country is some how immune to human stupidity bigotry? Because if so you are starting to sound a lot like the stereotype being visited upon my country in this thread. And don't expect me to leap to the defense of George Dumb Fuck Bush because I was one of the legions of people that marched in protest against that scum bag. You people need to get your facts from somewhere other than your TV.

  • all world is Agains USA you know that???

  • No the entire world isn't against the US, don't be silly. I will say that all the US haters on Youtube (An American web service) is pretty united though lol.

  • most countries just dislike u ,not hate u(the us policy, not the people)but its rational if u consider the damage u caused to the world in order to further ur interests(7 bases in colombia, wars in iraq, serbia, even the georgia war was incited by u)

  • i dont say that u approved this action of usa but ur representatives(bush administration was a disaster for the world)is who decide for u,and their plans are annoying for the rest of the world.its not u to blame for,the us police,i want to make myself clear

  • you are little.....

  • LOL, I am little??

  • @nuculearbazooka No, I'm pretty sure the majority of the world hates America. You cause wars based on lies, you cause recessions, you create animosity everywhere you go.

  • Why MissRainbowHeels. You sound like an American.

  • i think this conversation is meaningless....people should be unitied.excuse some attacks against usa,but greece has suffered from usa policy and interests.u are a powerful country that wants to impose its will to the rest of the world.its logic this 'hatred' towards u

  • Well I gotta agree with you on the value of this conversation, it is kind of a waste of time. People seem to forget that we're still in our adolescence, it's not an excuse, but every country in the world has had a period where they were the total bastards. It seems hypocritical to me to pass judgment on my nation when no country is immune- not that this is an excuse for our crappy foreign policy or anything. I'm pretty sure the world wasn't fond of Alexander the Great when he conquered them.

  • alexander indeed killid people but he is the only conqueror that was 'loved'and in the countries of asia they proudly say alexander passed from here.u are not adolescents,u are very powerful (despite ur weak economy nowadays)and u mess up in the affairs of other countries

  • I have to keep this short because of word count: We are adolescent, we're only 229 years old. We hardly have a comparable time to countries like England and Greece. I can't and won't defend Bush, the United States finally pulled its head out of its ass and elected Obama (hopefully it's not to late). And I can't find anything logical about hatred. I love world cultures and I think it's a damn shame when countries enforce barriers against each other (mine included). I just hope we fix things.

  • do u think obama will change the us policy?we dont think so....anyway,i also support the unity of the world, but the big countries have other plans.........

  • @nuculearbazooka if your leaders thought the same you would be an empire worth of global respect.there would be no terrorists no wars and we'd be drinking margaritas on Mars by now!

  • @TheKazanokefalos

    RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

  • @nuculearbazooka And it's funny what greatness Alexander did for the rest of the world. Without people like his spreading his knowledge as well as conquering. Do you really think #America would exist?

  • M'kay, I was going to engage you because I thought you might be something of a leveled headed person who could yield an interesting cultural debate...buuuut you're just another hater aren't you. Oh well. In closing, if you want to split hairs, Africa is considered the birth place of civilization. So lets go back even further! Greece wouldn't exist with out Africa. Lets keep going! America wouldn't exist with out the formation of the solar system. You. Are. A Jackass.

  • @nuculearbazooka Don't insult me please, by calling me an American. Look, Do you really think America would exist without the knowledge Greece gace the rest of the world? If you don't acknowledge that, then I'm sorry but you are a VERY ignorant person. Well, you are American aren't you. :]

  • I don't have to insult you Rainbow. The classless uneducated biased you display paints you in ways no insults I could throw at you could. Greece's contributions to the world can not be denied. And normally I would enjoy discussing those with someone...probably not on a youtube thread but otherwise yes. But you, you are a testament to the failure of the high calling of the Games. It's sad you display such animosity towards ANY country on a thread about the Olympics.

  • In closing, since you seem to very proud to wave the dick of Greece in the face of someone who already appreciate the country and it's remarkable contributions, I would remind you that with out the Allied forces during World War II, of which the United States played a key role, the games would have been held in New Germany. But continue your shit talking. I know how popular it is to slander America. My two Greece friends assure me you're just some random ass hat. I tend to agree.

  • as i have told u again, alexander did conquer , was an imperialist, but he was the only conqueror loved by the conquering people, i hope u cant deny that...everywhere in asia they are proud of alexander-who indeed killed people.

  • assassinated??this isnt fractious historical evidence???when i read about alexander, i always read that he was adored..i think u can see this wherever u read about alexander...

  • @billsiad7, no not the only one. Don't forget about Cyrus the Great, who not only didn't plunder and pillage, but also paid respect to the sites he conquered.

  • I so agree

  • A 2000+ year old wooden box with metal gears inside that with an external crank, it would read out all the dates of the past Olympic games. The first hard drive. Till that Jesus fellow moved in and abolished them. d(: AND say.... that white house looks alot like something we would build 5,000 years ago, or our cohort roman pals 4,000 years later. d(:

  • Yeah, Ebonypride, I'm not sure trumpeting yourself on the internet as an uncultured moron is such a good idea...

  • To Ebonypride09 all these stones you telling are boring to u for us are very considerably and remember what from these stones you have knowledge now, ok? And try to learn some history, to learn about what we done until now for all the world and we save some things. Now have a nice day.

  • It is very natural that you find it boring. You are uneducated! You come from USA! You have no history!

  • While as an American, I resent that comment...

    Good day.

  • Now heres a lesson to everybody.

The comment of the above person is why the world is going from bad to worse.

People cant appreciate the philosophy and the meaning behind things anymore. All people care about are fireworks and shows.

Keep that in mind everybody and dont be like the above person! Keep searching for the hidden and deeper meanings behind what you see in your life. That way your actions will be more careful and just!

  • man if you dont care about internet than dont watch it? you understand? its too "high" for you if you know what I mean, and you are black and you are proud to be "american" I hate those blacks instaead of searching your roots tha americnas made you slaves and you are proud to be american, I have many black friend even a black girlfriedn but they are all africans and they know their culture

  • BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing it ;)

  • I disagree with your charming statement. Greek culture is ancient and has greatly influenced the philosophy etc of many Western countries. With regards to China, with notable exception of Indian (and Tibetan) Buddhism there has been very few outside influences.

  • you a fukn moron greece made u waht u r 2day malaka

  • viva greece

  • Some of my posts were strong, because they were REPLIES to attacks about 2008 which I thought were unjustified, insulting, subjective and stereotype. Unfortunately, a lot of these attacks were thumbed out (there are a lot of Chinese!) so my posts now seem out of context.

I always thought 2004 was beautiful - you know I know you know I know that. 2008 was different to 2004 as a big Chinese banquet is different to a serene Greek statue. Two great peoples should not trade insults.

  • ok yes, if I have to admit, the olympics opening was a little showy - I think it was meant to. Have you seen the opening to the paralympics? Go on have a look. You will see the 'human' and 'emotional' side. Seriously.

  • beijing paralympics were great(as athens paralympics)but these games are emotional by their nature!beijing olympics were great,i dont try to make u believe that ours were the best.for me athens were the best, for u it was beijing one the best!(u irritated me a bit cause u justified ur preference by attacking to greece)

  • yes yes. You invented the Olympics. Thanks for sharing etc. (btw we invented our own sports you know...) And I didn't say this b4 given your population, you had to work 100 as hard as the Chinese did to stage 2004. So basically you did the impossible.

Sorry, I was pressing your buttons (making you angry on purpose) because you guys seem to forget that the Chinese moved heaven and earth for 2008 (literally) - we had a terrible 20th century and this is our party to say we are ok now...

  • 1)i dont compare the two cultures that are proved to be the most influencial ones to the west and east accordingly.2)greece isnt so poor country as u think.not only big countries can host olympics..3)greeks never attacked to chinese as the other western societies did..we respect the chinese and i know that chinese respect greeks

  • remember it! Greece IS a small country and to achieve a spectacular 2004, with increased security costs due to 9/11 and having to dig carefully through eons of archaeology required a Herculean effort. People who ignore this and revert to the Mediterranean stereotype (cant build anything on time, on budget etc) are guilty of racism.

And Britain is also great (ok a little less great now) so isnt it a wonderful coincidence that 3 consecutive Olympics are being hosted by 3 great empires?

  • now u speak logically...cause in ur posts u were critical against greece...(a third world country, dependent to eu.)of cource u can like the olympics u want!but athens olympics isnt comparable to other ones cause we speak about olympics that came home!

  • Greece is not a third world country dear!

  • read my comment more carefully pls...i didnt say this, sb else did and i just repeated this...

  • u have posted in other also videos attacking to greece...anyway athens olympics were artistic ,emotional ,having human on the centre..it was olympics adressed to heart, not the eye!beijings one was spectacular.

  • I have both Chinese and UK background. The Chinese worked really really hard for 2008 and I challenge unfair subjective attacks of those games. I am proud of my country just like you guys I said thing rashly, which caused offence so I apologise. But as the originators of democracy you Greeks surely can handle people with different opinions?

For the record, I am not an idiot. I do know the Greek civilisation is a corner stone of humanity. I even have pi in my profile name so I can

  • uk offered to the world usa, canada etc..?omg...totally hilarious...uk offered the elgin marbles?whats that?perhaps u mean the marbles of PARTHENON stolen by elgin.....

  • most people hate usa(not the people, the usa policy)industrial revolution caused the destruction of the environment.the channel bbc is a contribution to what?

  • haha....i would like to learn what ur country has offered (uk according to ur profile..)to the world?if u are british,i wonder why each year thousands of british people visit a 'third tier country'?as concerns the ceremony,i dont expect from british (that sent beckam to beijing ceremony)to understand the athens ceremony!

  • Was really good actually till the commentators ruined it. I mean besides being so ignorant how hard is it to actually read your script!!

  • Yeah ....I agree......and Greeks sould ask for forgivness right now for daring having aesthetically the best ever opening ceremony till today .

  • far better than china's!!!!

  • i wish the commentators could just shut the fuck up

  • I don't care if Athens 2004 was better than Beijing 2008. i just care of how to explain my feelings, my emotions after what i saw in Athens ceremony. So while i can't find the wright words, i just cry.. i feel & i cry.. How Poetic OMG Athens 04 was just wow....

  • " And you really have to wonder, how do they know all that stuff?" .... think, read, listen, wonder, dream! Stop sitting on your couch watching Oprah all day long and materialize the magnificent gift of being able to do advanced thought processes. Start acting like a true human instead of a well oiled stupid android. Become the man that people like Da Vinci, Euclides and many more talked about. Or at least try...

  • Nothing can compite western civilization!!!

  • What an idiot you are!!!

  • i hate when the comentarist talk and talk while during the ceremony.. is sooo anoying, makes me wanna mute the tv.

    let me hear!

  • I like more this stadium!!!! this one is more.... more... open to the sky, to the atmosphere, "to the world"....I mean if youre seated at the birds nest you´re like locked....i was in the athens olympic stadium and i felt like more free....at the birds nest i felt locked....

  • did someone in the world know something about the opening ceremony of london 2012???? some fact???? some preview???? something???? i wanna know xD.... I hope it gonna be a opening ceremony of rock!!!!! woo......jimmy page lighting the cauldron with guitar of fire wooo yeaaah!!!!!

  • what a ridiculous opening ceremony it would be with jimmy page

  • Achilles last stand.

  • Yeah, i feel that this ceremony was more beautiful than the Beijing OC, this one have more meaning

  • Yeah despite Greece being such a small country with small population, China is the opposite, but Greece produces quality.

  • lol its like their mass assembly line productions...quantity yes, but not much quality

  • :D yeah, I hope the UK one is good, we USED to produce quality!lol

  • Athens ceremony had more meaning & Heart !!

  • I think it's not about greek civilization nor chinese.......

It's about director's ideias and concepts...

And I say, Athens were better than beijing....

  • There can be no comparison between the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and those held in other countries, including China. Human history is tied to Greek history. Western civilization was born in Greece. All that can be considered the best of human accomplishments in the arts, sciences, literature and philosophy was born in Greece. The world celebrates the accomplishments and gifts of the Greeks to the rest of us, including China. We may not live in Greece, but we are all Greeks. Thanks for posting!
