I've been playing guitar for years now and a lot of people can't sweep only because they don't take the time to practice it. Mainly because t is really hard. Everything like tapping and tremolo picking can be learned in like a day. But I just started actually practicing sweep picking last week. It is very hard to learn but when you finally learn its all worth the hours of practicing. It took my friend 5 months to be really good at it.

Take the lesson for what it is worth. Most of you theory nuts are so caught up in theory that it limits your creative ability. So what he doesn't know his theory. He is better because he actually has the balls to play outside of the box. Throwing chromatic notes in an a minor scale makes that scale your own not some generic scale you would hear in every song. Some constructive criticism for you. Plan the "lesson" out and make it more formal. Practice hard!

You definitely got some talent, but I notice something about your picking technique that will probably make you struggle at speeds in excess of 160 bpm. This is due to the way you hold your pick with the outer part of your thumb. If you hold it further back and with the support under with the index finger base, and not the tip, you will be able to eliminate upward picking hangups at higher speeds. A good trick to know, it takes some getting used to but increases your range.
