Jack is on a totally different planet/plane than Derek or Warren. He's forgotten more about theory and how to play than both of those guys put together know.
And I love both Warren and Derek. But to compare them to Jack as players? I mean, get serious.
It's not a competition. Having a discussion about who is better is a waste of time. Some will prefer Derek...others will prefer Jack. The important thing is we're listening to good music. I really think that's what it's all about. (oh...I like Jack.) ;)
@mclrk626 Probably whatever came on the guitar. He doesn't need special this or that to make a guitar sound like a million bucks. Just his hands. He does like a smaller, more contoured neck, but I've never heard him mention special pickups.
dandamagetoo and rowdyjax, the bass player is the late (and great) Charles Dungy. Charles was jazz player from the 50s and 60s. He played with Monk and a few others. He is/was by far, Jack's favorite bass player, including Elizabeth. Charles best compliment for Jack was: " Jack, you turn every place we play into a joint." Sadly, there is little or no recordings of Charles' work other than this.
hey rowdyjax, the bass player is most likely Jack's wife Elizabeth. she is mighty awsome in her on right. I can't think of anybody that can just sit down and out play either of them. oops not Liz in this one...my bad

@Chromatype you obviously haven't listened to much Derek if you think his jazz vocabulary is limited. listen to mahjoun/greensleeves off songlines live or one of his 10 minute "my favorite things"
@johnjohnson510 I don't believe he said that Derek's vocabulary was limited, but rather that Jack's vocabulary is vast. Derek will get there eventually, but Jack will always have twenty years on Derek.
Today I first discovered Jack Pearson. And I consider myself a "guitarhead". I obviously have a lot of catching up to do with this cat. I sense it will be quite enjoyable.
Absolutely stunning ! Jack is the equal of any really isnt he .. I heard Scofield on a liveversion of I dont need no doctor that I thought maybe the greatest thing I've ever heard .. love to hear them together .. imagine!
I saw him this weekend at the Gibson Summer Jam 07 in Nashville and he was incredible Friday night at the big jam session and then Saturday afternoon at a one hour clinic. Put on an awesome blues demo, starting in Bf and moving up 4 half tones at the end of each riff with a multitude of styles and phrasing and winding up back in Bf. I'll never forget it.
I really don't know how many times I just hit the replay on this. Damn these two are great together. That dude on bass was on it. Guitar guy has chops I'd die for. I'm so impressed with both of them.

Why is it always a competition? No Derek does NOT have Jack's vocalbulary with the Blues, let alone Jazz.

He's probably too tasteful for younger players to appreciate.

I know he is much older than Derek...but Derek can't play at his level yet...not that he won't...but Jack's jazz vocabulary is really vast.

I beleive that's Charles Dungy on the bass, who told me once that, "it's all in the stroke". Indeed, God rest your soul.
