everything is perfect here !!!! now not about your play .... get there front coated head and it willl sound totally vintage perfect and authentic ..... wanna hear it with 18" kick .... that must be amazin´
Very impressed......you harnessed the BIG foot of Elvin, definitely....I've seen most of your vids.....you might be the next big drummer to look out for!!!
I would hazard a geuss and say Jazz drummers who study at music college study shit and transcribe jazz drumming as part of their curriculum - haha I,m just geussing. I can't even remember watching this - pretty good though - keep studying them tabs :)
I dont hear many licks by elvin, but that can be a good thing, its inspired by him and you still have your own voice. Really love the solo, one or two licks i havent heard before.....and i have taken them! Great stuff man, hope all is going well at berklee
saw this ages ago, then couldn't find it cause I forgot to add in my favs, but this solo and the sound of your kit was burnt into my brain, one of my fav YT drum solos. So glad to find it again. : )
Nothing like Buddy. Buddy never killed flam rolls to my knowledge, they didn't start appearing until the more modern-era younger guys were throwin' down. ;)
This is one of the best examples of a musical drum solo I have heard. Very melodic and fluid. It was so relaxed it drew me in. You do Elvin and Tony proud! Fantastic job! I'll be sharing this with others.
the drums sound great, I dunno what the fuss is. can´t anyone tell it´s a beautiful gretsch usa kit? some of the finest around... but check kumu, odery, jaydee, head etc.
I first saw you walk to the kit and said to myself, this guy's going to suck the big one. Man, was I wrong! Dude, that was the shit! I've been playing for 25 years now and love to see a guy beat it like he means it...nice finesse!
that's amazing...the notes are placed so musically. those 1/4-note triplets at 1:06 are crazy! how long have you been working on jazz? i'm just starting to scratch the surface...i really hope to achieve that level of limb-independence someday.
and what rolls are you using around the set? it sounds perfect!
Basic flam roll: You start with a pick-up note (usually bass drop/ note(s) that begins phrase) then start a flam. You can use different flams but for a beginner just use rL. Start r on tom, L of snare. Then bring your right hand over to snare and begin a double stroke roll since it's the free hand in the phrase after the accented L.
it is great playing, but what is better is the fact that young people have not let this music die. It was an era that is not likely to be repeated, and I wonder if 50 year from now students will be emulating Elvin/Tony W/Buddy, or, a current player from this day. My bet is the former.
far out i've only seen a few of your videos but you are a really talented and musical guy. this is exactly the kind of thing i want to do.. great! by the way this kit sounds really good too..
Wow, man - WAY impressive! The soundwas so friggin' authentic and the time never wavered once. I just got back from playing the North Texas Jazz Festival, and the whole time I was there, I only maybe a saw a few cats who could hold a candle to you. This was a great video - thanks for sharing it, man!
hey fella, saw ur chris dave stuff then found this!! Excellent playing, great touch, sound, technique, ears.....all good. Any idea where I might find some elvin solo transcriptions? Any chris dave stuff you were doing (on paper) would be a bonus too!!! G-U.K.
Hey man. Great stuff. I always though about transcribing an Elvin solo, but never knew where to begin. The sound quality of his drums on most of his records is pretty poor since microphone technology wasn't so great back in the day. This just makes it hard to make out exactly what he's playing.
Sooo, what's you're background? How long did you study snare before getting to it? Did you work a ton on each limb and together and it all added up or are you just a mad man? Anything you found to be particularly helpful? Did you spend 5 years in a hole? Awesome playing!
Haha thanks alot man. I don't know I just listen alot and I think I'm pretty keen on picking up stuff from just listening. I really don't have much formal training. I started off playing the kit right way without any rudimental training on the snare drum, which is something I regret actually.
