  • Very Very nice Are you useing some gladstone? Really made me feel good!

  • terrible!!!!

you shouldn't write the name of Elvin in this orrible video!!!

  • terrible!!!!

  • nice man

  • Damn...and I thought I was a good drummer. Where did you learn to play like that?

  • well played!

  • Dude where you been at man!!??? Do you have a facebook...we need to link up again!

  • first thing I thought was "where's Elvin?" but next thing I thought was "....wow"

  • everything is perfect here !!!! now not about your play .... get there front coated head and it willl sound totally vintage perfect and authentic ..... wanna hear it with 18" kick .... that must be amazin´

  • very surprised. well friggin done

  • Maybe change the title to 'Elvin Jones tribute solo'. As well as your playing is, it's not correctly titled.

  • @SnapshotsMusic hah, ok.

  • @SnapshotsMusic what a sad comment.... come on he plays so good, and you're watching at the title..

  • @marcoplebs It's a descriptive error. Good player, wrong sentence.

  • sounds more like dave weckl to me

  • dude.......teach me

  • Awesome i hate your camera because it makes your drums sound bad sometimes but i loved the solo sooo legit

  • yes bro, keep the faith.

  • Very impressed......you harnessed the BIG foot of Elvin, definitely....I've seen most of your vids.....you might be the next big drummer to look out for!!!

  • Man that really puts my playing to shame. How long had you been playing by this stage?

  • Six dislikes!!! I don't know why, I think this young dude sounds terrific. Keep up the good work and best wishes to you zmoney99999.

  • I would hazard a geuss and say Jazz drummers who study at music college study shit and transcribe jazz drumming as part of their curriculum - haha I,m just geussing. I can't even remember watching this - pretty good though - keep studying them tabs :)

  • Nice job. Swingin. Dig your R foot. Great L hand.

  • Man! That's a great solo, I can totally see your phrasing being similar to elvin's. And your licks are crisp. Keep it up dude.

  • I dont hear many licks by elvin, but that can be a good thing, its inspired by him and you still have your own voice. Really love the solo, one or two licks i havent heard before.....and i have taken them! Great stuff man, hope all is going well at berklee

  • Very nice

  • when you learn these are you using tabs or pay by ear?? - excellent job by the way

  • @raindogred

lol. Who the hell tabs jazz drummer licks?

  • Also, how do you tune that snare?!

  • Great playing!

  • amazing! cleaner than elvin hahaha

  • Why don't you put a head for the resonant on your bass?

  • This is awesome.

  • awesome, i'm jealous of the skills. what kind of cymbals are they out front?

  • saw this ages ago, then couldn't find it cause I forgot to add in my favs, but this solo and the sound of your kit was burnt into my brain, one of my fav YT drum solos. So glad to find it again. : )

  • nice work son!

  • that was sweet dude

  • i got one of them lying in my garage, a gretsch. an old drummer left it there, and iwas gonna give it away. is that a very fucking stupid idea?

  • CHECK OUT MY DRUM VIDS!

  • Ahh!!! Awesome! What are you doing? Got any tips?

  • yea, i think its time for this guy to give me lessons, like now...

  • :51

no... y-you can't do that. haha. holy SHIT

  • nice

  • how old are you?

  • 22. This video is from over 2 years ago though.

  • great drummer!!

  • Good Good solo man !!!!!

    bravo !!!

  • Hey man

Is that a Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit you're playing there? If so what do you think of them? I'm considering buying one.

  • Not bad mate!!

  • great playing man!! Very good!!!

  • a shame you´re playing that on Gretsch, which takes away all authenticity.

Just kiddin!! Sounds great, you have that pulse underlying the solo.. very nice

  • wow that's great man..

you have a great flow around the set

  • estupendo, esta muy bueno

  • great job man it's quite consistent

  • nice man

  • I wish...ha. Maybe if I got my singles a hundred times faster.

  • @ZMoney99999 I honestly think your playing is more interesting man.

  • @killeroctian

of course not, it doesn't sound like Buddy Rich at all.

    It sounds like Tony/ Elvin

  • @killeroctian

Nothing like Buddy. Buddy never killed flam rolls to my knowledge, they didn't start appearing until the more modern-era younger guys were throwin' down. ;)

  • Sounds sweet more Elvin than Tony but bad ass nun the less

  • Really nice playing, but sounds nothing like Tony or Elvin's feels... Dunno if that's what you were aiming for?

  • nice playing and keep up the good work

  • Killer job man! awesome i really enjoyed watching you shed! keep it up!

  • holy shit man

  • Great playing. You can really throw man!

  • sounds closer to tony to me

  • Wanna make some money? Start writing that stuff down, because a BUNCH of us would pay to learn it! Excellent!

  • This is one of the best examples of a musical drum solo I have heard. Very melodic and fluid. It was so relaxed it drew me in. You do Elvin and Tony proud! Fantastic job! I'll be sharing this with others.

  • the drums sound great, I dunno what the fuss is. can´t anyone tell it´s a beautiful gretsch usa kit? some of the finest around... but check kumu, odery, jaydee, head etc.

  • ballsy posting with "elvin jones"...but you pulled it off damn well brother!

    good shit.

    what kit are you playing?

you need a new one to go along with that skill.

  • Agreed.

  • Very inspiring

  • Man, you're playing isn't done justice by the sound of that snare, imo. Awesome sound.

  • u totally tricked us with the walk to the drumset..usually someone is recording the good drummers but you are exactly that! great job!

  • I first saw you walk to the kit and said to myself, this guy's going to suck the big one. Man, was I wrong! Dude, that was the shit! I've been playing for 25 years now and love to see a guy beat it like he means it...nice finesse!

  • delicious!

  • awesome!!!!!!

  • NICE DUDE!!!

  • ほんま・・・・cool!

  • I honestly think you are emulating these guys SO well.....it takes alot of guts to post a clip with the names "tony" or "elvin" anywhere in it.

    Well done man.

  • someone knows their shit.....well spotted man!

  • Good shit! Nice playing man

  • wtf dude thats just insane. lol.

i want to play like you... :D

  • hang yourself

  • uMM Holmes - not exactly Elvin Jones but you are on you way

  • Nice. How long have you been playing. By the way, the roll from 1:36 - 1:39 was awesome.

  • amaaaaaaaaazing...GREAT SOLO

  • Wow great playing man keep it up!

  • Man, just amazing! Great "feeling"

  • really enjoyed your drumming...nice

  • wow, how old are you?

  • dude you're really good you keep real solid time great technique cool feel... how old are you?

  • that's amazing...the notes are placed so musically. those 1/4-note triplets at 1:06 are crazy! how long have you been working on jazz? i'm just starting to scratch the surface...i really hope to achieve that level of limb-independence someday.

and what rolls are you using around the set? it sounds perfect!

  • @epn10

There's plenty of flam rolls in there.

Basic flam roll: You start with a pick-up note (usually bass drop/ note(s) that begins phrase) then start a flam. You can use different flams but for a beginner just use rL. Start r on tom, L of snare. Then bring your right hand over to snare and begin a double stroke roll since it's the free hand in the phrase after the accented L.

So it could be - b brLrrllrrll

  • Yeeeaaahhhh!

  • Pretty cool sounding!

The drums sound perfect for this style of drumming!

  • very nice playing man. I enjoyed watching.

  • it is great playing, but what is better is the fact that young people have not let this music die. It was an era that is not likely to be repeated, and I wonder if 50 year from now students will be emulating Elvin/Tony W/Buddy, or, a current player from this day. My bet is the former.

  • you play very well.

  • Nice technique, cool drumming - Groovy :)

  • sinigos you're stupid!...he's great

  • he is very good

  • far out i've only seen a few of your videos but you are a really talented and musical guy. this is exactly the kind of thing i want to do.. great! by the way this kit sounds really good too..

  • real nice. i like the sound of the ride

  • What kit is thath?:D

  • An old Gretsch

  • It was inspired by him, which doesn't necessarily mean that I was trying to imitate him lick for lick.

  • @ZMoney99999 more like it means you wanted to benefit from his name by getting a load of views

  • sound great man really impressed u got the feel and the sound chops u got it all

  • what kind of kit is that?

  • dude kick ass solo! old school is the way to go

  • Dig it ! Kickin it old school

  • jeez man that is beautiful !! you make that kit sing !! Top playing bud

  • Killer. Really fine playing. Like to hear ya with a band.

  • Wow, man - WAY impressive! The soundwas so friggin' authentic and the time never wavered once. I just got back from playing the North Texas Jazz Festival, and the whole time I was there, I only maybe a saw a few cats who could hold a candle to you. This was a great video - thanks for sharing it, man!

  • hey fella, saw ur chris dave stuff then found this!! Excellent playing, great touch, sound, technique, ears.....all good. Any idea where I might find some elvin solo transcriptions? Any chris dave stuff you were doing (on paper) would be a bonus too!!! G-U.K.

  • Nice playing, nice feel, man!

  • one word...sick!

  • man you're one of the very few serious drummers on youtube. great video

  • Hey man. Great stuff. I always though about transcribing an Elvin solo, but never knew where to begin. The sound quality of his drums on most of his records is pretty poor since microphone technology wasn't so great back in the day. This just makes it hard to make out exactly what he's playing.

By the way, what kind of rolls are you using?

  • Sooo, what's you're background? How long did you study snare before getting to it? Did you work a ton on each limb and together and it all added up or are you just a mad man? Anything you found to be particularly helpful? Did you spend 5 years in a hole? Awesome playing!

  • Haha thanks alot man. I don't know I just listen alot and I think I'm pretty keen on picking up stuff from just listening. I really don't have much formal training. I started off playing the kit right way without any rudimental training on the snare drum, which is something I regret actually.

  • that was pretty solid dude. certainly serving Elvin justice. do you go to berklee?

  • Nah but I'm thinking of going to Berklee for a semester.

  • this is swinging. Do you use any particular books or are you studying at a conservatory?

  • Neither actually I go to a liberal arts college. I think I just listen alot I don't know really hah.

  • Hey man, just wanted to let you know that this video has inspired me to expand my playing with this as a reference point. Already it's made my sound and approach so much fresher. Thanks.

  • Thanks alot man, it's very flattering to know that I'm inspiring you to expand your playing.

  • What did you do to become so fluid and solid in the jazz vein, man?

  • Wow. I want to be as good as you. :D

  • It's not fair how good the cymbals and drums sound.

Do you practice in a different studio each time or something? The kits change like every video.

  • I have two drumkits at home, sometimes I practice with this one which is more for jazz and then I have a pearl masters custom for harder stuff, and some videos are at my college either in the drum studio or in the recital hall.

  • wow man you are really something

  • You're very good. I hear more Elvin than Tony. But your good enough to do your own thing. Be free...

  • Let all the little experts be jealous if they must, but this is something beautiful. The idea of free rhythm in structure is an important artistic development that needs to be continuously elaborated on, and this is doing it.

  • Thanks alot for the comment man. That's exactly what I'm trying to do.

  • awesome!

  • great stuff!

i liked the first 20 seconds the most though

  • Man, you suck at not playing the drums. Geeez... how much do you practice man?

  • bravissimooooooooooo

  • thats an amazing job bro you should be proud

  • Very Nice, You left the video response for me, GREAT!! We need more guys like you and less Travis Barker SUCK drummers on here: )

  • Like a breath of fresh air dude. Goodjob

  • What is that ride btw? Thanks

  • Great swing to it! I'd love to see you with a band, or just a bassist!

  • wow

    excelent!

    thats called play drums!

  • Fantastic chops man!

  • man u retarded great playing man

  • Great playing, man.... Great Vid!

Do you have any vids of you playing with a band? I'd love to see that! 5 stars....
