She is incredible! I've seen many snipets of her performing this role but unfortunately I'm unconvinced that she's Giselle. It's a shame since her technical prowess is PERFECT for this role, but the overall seems lacking something.
Don't care about any of the criticisms levelled at her: that elevation and ballon is astonshing to see - a rare gift - and she's a wonderful ballerina.
To be honest I do not understand criticism of yours Do you seriously suggest that Natalia, the country darling, must change her dance to satisfy just few like you when she is adored by millions? Are you Marius Petipa? Would you reveal us a name outside Russia that would outdance this girl? I assume you have ideal image that lives just in your head. Then my advice to you: do not go to opera houses, sleep more - enjoy your imaginary perfection and that is free of charge too.
@Buondelmonte123 Neither do I, Buondelmonte.. Haven said that, I believe that Natalia appeals to certain audiences, audiences that are not very picky as far as flawless port-de-bras, disciplined feet and other finer aspects of classical ballet are concerned. . Although Gisele is her better role, haven seen Osipova on stage couple of times, I have no particular desire to see her again in any role.
@MrRight1000 Thank you. There is no doubt that Osipova is very popular and does have a wide appeal. I am of a generation that was able to see Makarova and Kolpakova in Giselle with a few days of each other and people looked at me as though mad when I said that Kolpakova was my preferred Giselle. We live in an age where high extensions and the internet can do a great deal for a ballerina's "Star Status."
I think she's fantastic. It's lovely to see a dancer with such enthusiasm! She is not a bit rigid as a dancer. She would never have that kind of stage presence, if she was even a bit more wooden. She's just throwing herself at the music. It would be pretty impossible to be that fluid, fast & finished - something would have to give. There is a lot of modern, fusion stuff around right now, that's fantastic, but it's nice to see someone let rip in a traditional sense.
@deirdreroseable I think the whole feel for the music can get lost with ballet sometimes - with the formality of it, but she's lost in it. It's obvious that she feels it. Her boundless confidence is also evident. I think her ability to connect so well with the music, is what makes her stand out. It's like she's kicked the shackles off & really gone for it, which is very refreshing.
@deirdreroseable yes, you are right, but she is very much a product of a school that has been debased. What Osipova really needs is to work over an extended period with an experienced coach who can refine both her technique and her interpretative skills.
I'm not denying that she has an excitement about her, and you cannot teach that fearlessness she has onstage, but I want to know that she knows what she is doing onstage.
@palubob Thank you. The strength of the Russian school is, indeed, that passing on of the knowledge and the experience. When Nadezhda Pavlova made her Bolshoi debut as Giselle, three generations of previous interpreters of Giselle were present in the audience, one of whom, Marina Semyonova, had coached Pavlova for her debut.
@MlleOdilette You watch, wait five years from now and see where she is then. I think she'll be another Nadezhda Pavlova, very lovely, very exciting, very very promising and then..? On goes the weight, and it's a fabulous future behind her, thank you very much. Her move to the Mikhailovsky is the beginning of the end. Sadly.
@MlleOdilette What makes you think I hate her? Nothing I've written here is anything other than constructive, objective concern. If you think that is 'hate' then the problem lies with you, not me. I'm always overjoyed to see young talent. Always. But if you have seen the same amount of tragic, burnt-out, talent that has 'no second act' that I have, you'd be worrying too. Please do not ascribe to me words like 'hate' when I am merely expressing a genuine concern.
@Buondelmonte123 sorry, I wasn't referring to you but to the people on youtube who bash popular dancers other than their favorites for no reason. I'll repeat my last question: why do you think she's a "burnt-out talent with no second act"? I'm just asking for clarification, I would like to know your opinion.
@MlleOdilette Thank you. I agree with you about the bashing that goes on here. Most annoying. What so many people who watch Y'tbe don't understand is there is a huge interpretative leeway among talented dancers. Osipova isn't burnt out yet, but I honestly think she needs to take her career just a little more slowly than she does at present and allow her self, and her interpretations, to mature. It is often said that dancers have short careers, but that is very often self-induced.
she lucked like she was flying when she was doing those jumps woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
Respond to this video… Osipova may not be the cleanest and most classical dancer but there’s no denying her aggressively beautiful technique, her arresting impact, and the way everything she does registers so emphatically with her audience - for better or for worse.
@annamicro Osipova stands out amongst the bumper crop of current topflight ballerinas in three ways; her physicality, her amplitiude and her personal stage charisma. Everything Osipova dances looks bigger, grander and more full-scaie. She devours space like no ballerina I’ve ever seen. The physical impact of her dancing is indelible, every movement registers as an arresting visual impact in the mind. And as for her charisma, that ’s a quality that cannot be taught. It’s innate.
she reminds me of the the old ballet legends, theres something kind of raw about her dancing and yet she has the perfect technique of ballerinas now a days..... a rare and perfect combination, especially for giselle!!
personally I think shes to much of a technical dancer for this role. yes Giselle requires great skill from the dancer, but! without the soul of whats being dance, it loses it's meaning. here Giselle is ecstatic that she is no longer confined to her sickly body and is aloud to dance the way she always wanted to, but in the movement of a Willie! so it must be whispi
@pepercat17 Natalia Osipova has her unique style. She is incredible fast in her movement, extremly athletic, although she is ... tiny. I think she is the best Giselle i have ever seen, outstanding this variation. For example, no Prima Ballerina can reach her Kitri or Esmeralda.
@Leirix61 I have not seen her do those variations, but those roles deman a high technical level and not so much as in a "soul" per-say as those were choreographed when the time was to show off the dancers ability and less on the actual feel of the character like the era Giselle was made
@pepercat17 Yes - thank you! That's it exactly! the freed Giselle is recalling the joy in dance she felt as a peasant girl, but as a wili now: that is also what the music is telling us. The earth can hardly hold her down. Her interpretation and that floating spaciousness work completely for me. I just *love* this!
I saw Osipova at Covent Garden this week = her Giselle was amazing - full of dramatic interpretation and her white act was so beautiful - light as a feather
Her high-jump ability makes her perfect for Giselle 2nd act, she looks totally as a ghost and her jumps look very light.
I love her, many used to say she would never handle anything more than Kitri, but here's that proof that that's not true in any single way, she's beautiful in many roles.
Hey everyone! If you love ballet as much as I do, then please go to my page and click the link for my blog that's about anything and everything that has to do with dancing!
I though the music was a bit slow for such a dramatic entrance... Osipova rocked it though! She seemed to manilpulate the music to her speed... Awesome!
since i see osipova in this variation i told my teacher: hey i wanna dance the variation of giselle changing into a willi and she say me but its a little difficult and i say well if i want to become as beautiful and amazing as osipova ill should try no?? even though i dont have the body a person will wish a ballerina to have.
isnt gorgeous that the roles natalia has danced are very different from other interpretations of other ballerinas she gives her own specially touch to her kitri to her giselle to her aspicia to her ramzee she doesnt seem to be the same in all of her interpretations it seems af if you change her in every role but she never forgets her technique and her magnificient stage prescence!! love osipova!!!and yes applause is a little annoying but if i go to watch osipova ill be clapping all the time.
Amazing! She moves with such ethereal grace; and in her jumps she lands silently and springs up again, like her feet never touched the floor. Love it!
So take that amazing power of hers and temper it, culitvate it, harness it...and then you have this totally new level of what a Wili can be!!! Apparently she CAN do it ALL, Fabulous!
Giselle goes towards Myrtha, who touches her with her branch of rosemary; the shroud falls off and Giselle is changed into a Wili. Her wings grow and unfold. Her feet skim the ground. She dances, or rather darts, into the air like her graceful sisters, joyfully recalling and sketching the steps which she danced in the first act, before her death.
