Nope! you have a duty of care, a duty of care if you are the MD or a lowly paid sales assistant. You are catering for people of all abilities (or lack of ability) you must have fluffed a gear change at some point yourself in your cycling "career" and got a bit of a wobble on, someone with not enough skill, natural balance or mechanical sympathy might not be able to deal with the problems that would arise.
It is indefensible and you sir are a fool. (which possibly, is why you work at Halfords)
I bought a cheap cycle computer from Halfords and installed in myself.
It wouldn't work so i went back to ask for help.
They wouldn't look at it unless I paid a £4 set-up fee even though I'd already set it up.
So I said I would have to return it as faulty. They had to ensure it was faulty before i could get a refund. Turns out it needed some very minor tweaking... (for free, thankfully!)
To compete with cheaper stuff off e bay, they have to be more willing to offer help and support.
Sorry but I work in Halfords to say you wouldn't trust "Halfords" with your bike is one thing but how people come to the conclusion that people working there don't no nothing I don't no, I personally ride Bmx fixie and DH and occasional roadie's I built all my bikes chose all the parts individually and built them from ground up I service each one regularly and there all perfect for my riding would you say I no nothing? And I'm not even a mechanic in my branch, the amount of people we give advic
@BSambo90 Why would anyone ask the cleaner/shop assistant/IT guy (Delete as appropriate) for advice on bikes? It makes as much sense as going into the pet shop and asking for advice on washing machines!
I've had tyres that cost more than Halfords bikes. Still, if you're up for a laugh, nothing better than taking an Apollo MTB round your local Downhill Track to see how long it takes for the Head Tube to snap, bottom bracket to crack or the wheels to buckle :).
As a former bike technician for Halfords, I can say this does happen. Product quality is questionable at times, and so is the training. Most staff get no training other than being shown the ropes by current staff (who often have no real training either). I wouldn't ever buy anything from the Apollo range, nor would I ever recommend one. I remember a child ending up in a wall after his breaks failed. We removed the model from sale but Halfords took no action apart from to pay the parents off.
Just because you've heard rumours about people's bikes falling apart from Halfords, doesn't mean anything about the bikes. I work in Halfords and I can safely say that anyone who walks away with a decent bike is completely fine. It's only people that think spending under £300 on a brand new bikes is OK that ever come back. If you want someone to blame, blame the people that make the bikes, not those who put them together.

Defend that numbnuts (personal attack in response to yours!)
Just move on and stop sticking up for a crap company, of course not everyone that works for Halfords is poorly trained and hard of thinking, when I was doing my training with ATG there was a Halfords employee on the course, he was paying for it out of his own pocket, could be the only good wrench wkg for Halfords!
@boltysan Course I'll defend that! A gear change on the front causes her to 'lose her balance.' Sounds plausible! I'm not defending the company, just the people that work here
@TheMadHattersley Im with you, I work at halfords too and I can assure you that every bike that has left that store since I have worked there (even the £85 Trax bikes) have been safe to ride. If you abuse your bike, or worse choose to build it yourself to save yourself money and dont know what your doing, you are asking for trouble.
But like TheMadHattersley said, many of the issue are down to the manufactures....I mean cmon, plastic brake levers.......
@chalenger42 Your argument might carry weight if you were a qualified mechanic or if you could prove your competence, as it is you cannot prove that you have skills over and above those of someone who has experience of building flatpack furniture from Ikea.
There is no way that Halfords would pay for you to do the training required to pass the examination.
Don't stick up for an employer that is only interested in the bottom line and will (at best) pay as little as is possible.
After buying a bike from Halfords, cycling it for a few days, having the breaks fail, getting a double compound fracture in my arm, taking them to court and winning, I love this.
this advert is a fcucking joke halfords dont know shit about bikes there fcucking usless never let them touch build or setup your bike the end part was funny though
My neighbours son got a job at Halfords and was expected to learn as and the jobs came in. He then got a disciplinary for setting a kids front brake up to powerfully ! How are the staff expected to be 'experts' as the adverts imply when they get no pre job training ?
hahha thats great

Don't buy a bike from this retailer... Go to your local family bike shop for professional advice and friendly help. Happy Christmas.

@TheMadHattersley So you'd be happy enough building up a bike that you know is a BSO? You'd actually sign it off as ready for sale?
Jobs are scarce and you may feel like you have to do things that you're not proud of but coming on here and defending them is amazing!
