No, I don't think it was mistranslated... actually, Holy WAS having the opposite effect. It's like when antibodies can't fight the disease, but they keep trying and build up and kill you. Meteor was beyond stopping, but the overkill effort Holy was putting in was not only useless, it was destroying Midgar (at least, that's what I read somewhere...)

I hate this ending because it basically admits that the game was pointless. Holy didn't do anything, the party didn't do anything to help save the planet--the planet saves itself. Besides being a huge Deus Ex Machina, it means that the characters could have stayed at home drinking coffee and playing board games, and it would have turned out just the same. Great storytelling (sarcasm).

@laserwolf65 But it seems the purpose of the characters wasn't so much to save the planet anyways. Wasn't that what they said in the highwind? That as much as they would like to say it was for the planet then they primarily had personal reasons. You know, feel special, save friends and families, save Aeris who maybe had a hand in the lifestream coming out, revenge and what not. And then all the small sidequests in which they helped people and released shinra's hold of the planet.

holy was helping the meteor. holy is like the parent of the planet, it only wants whats best for it. by destroying midgar/humanity it would keep the planet alive longer. the most geographical damage the meteor could do was cause a big meteor (like in northern crater). the planet however didnt want that to happen because it knew the value of life, (plus the lifestream was made of life).

If your life was threatened wouldn't you attempt a last ditch effort to save yourself. Planet=Living being in this game that is. So it uses the lifestream to save itself.

The line with Holy having the opposite effect is not a mistranslation. It's not quite clear even in the Japanese dialogue, but it means that Meteor is too close to the planet and Holy is actually harming the planet with its destructive power instead of helping. When the Lifestream comes out of the planet it probably bounces Meteor away and lets Holy take care of it from a safe distance.

I think the last battle was in fact the REAL Sephiroth in body and mind, as you can see when you saw Sephiroth "Sleeping" in the Crater earlier in the game, he did not have any coat on him, so this was the same Sephiroth "Sleeping" in the crater, meaning it could've been the real Sephi, bodified!

As it said earlier, the planet is in danger and cannot help. Hence the weapons.
