This was the last good Marillion album....after this they created that Racket crap...and lost the magic and creativity...I never saw them live again after this tour
The first Marillion/Hogarth - Song that didn't make me fall asleep. Well, to be true, I woke up around 9:20. The guy can really sing emotional. Why not more often?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I AM awake, when I listen. Fact is, that - compared to the Fish - aera - most of the newer stuff from Marillion is boring. To me, that is. Hogarth is a good singer for sure and the other guys are still the same, but I miss a certain "craziness factor", which the band had, during the Fish - aera.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And several other things like "to me, that is". I'm not alone with that opinion as you can read all over youtube, but after all, it's all a matter of taste. So, after Fish left, Marillion went straight from being THE prog rock band of the 80s to making elevator music. You like it - fine. I'm bored.
But I see Marillion with Steve Hogart as a different band and they really have hundreds of songs that really are fantastic. You just never must compare them with the songs with Fish. Both are top of the bill for me. Only a different kind of music. Listen to it without looking for the Fish-sound. Then you might enjoy it !
I always find it so fantastic seeing the Greatest British Band Ever perform live. The first time I saw this (my all time favourite song with my all time second favourite guitar break - only Andy Latimer's 'Ice' is better in my view) performed live at Manchester Academy is probably the first time I ever made a fool of myself when sober. But hey, who cares as long as the music is this good.
Ken5244...You are a right-wing, homophobic, narrow-minded bigot and you can rightly go
fuck yourself with the biggest dildo in your closet. Marillion's wonderful music is not meant for an ignorant cunt like you. Insane Clown Posse would be more your speed...
Well, now we're getting down to it, aren't we? The real source of your venom is that you're a homosexual and resented my earlier comment? I figured that and have been waiting for you to tip your (limp) hand.
Right wing? Sorta, but not the way you're implying. Homophobic? No. That dishonest term implies that all people who disapprove of homosexuality do so because they're afraid of it. My disapproval has nothing to do with fear (or hatred), and I resent your dishonest accusation.
You can always tell a hardcore leftist a mile away. You can't engage in a civil conversation and succesfully debate a subject with facts or reason, so you resort to personal attacks and profanity. You ought to be really proud of yourself -- you're obviously a sophisticated thinker and a highly-advanced human being. *rolls eyes*
The irony here is that you don't even realize how much you're embarrassing yourself. As the expression goes, give some people enough rope & they'll hang themselves.
Re your other question about the meaning of the song: The "strange engine" is the human heart, and this song is Steve's autobiographical account of his own life. The boy who "wore a red coat and walked a bulldog, and saw his reflection in the mirror of the lake" is him. The lyrics progress chronologically throughout his early life.
I love the song; it's just the free-form musings in this live version that I disagree with. But as I said, I know his heart is in the right place.
Thank you Ken5244 for your very elaborating comments. I'm about to be convinced about H's naivity when it comes to worldaffairs - which unfortunately goes for a lot of musicians and artists. But H is still a fantastic song and lyric writer.
No problem. I didn't have enough space before to elaborate further about H's statements, but it's just been a series of disappointing views that he's expressed over the last several years that I've disagreed with. He's very anti-American, he believes homosexuality if fine, he's against incarcerating criminals, he apparently believes in open borders, and in general is a "one-world" guy.
But like you say, a lot of artists have similar views. And like you, I still admire his talent (a lot).
Steve H's free-form musings in the middle of the song are a bit disappointing. "No such thing as a winnable war"? Sorry, but that's just stunningly naive. Luckily for him, his parents' generation did WIN World War II against the Nazi's or he wouldn't even have been here to sing this song. What was the alternative? "Choose peace" by refusing to defend themselves, and be exterminated?
That said, a brilliant song by a band and a guy who I know mean well and have good intentions. :-)
Hey Ken5244 - take it easy. H is being ironic. I don't recognize that specific text but I suppose that H was singing lyrics from other artists songs, like the Police ("there is no policitcal solution"). But when we are at it - I never really understood the message in the song This Strange Engine - any comments?
Yes, you're spot on. He was singing a Police lyric in there as well: a few lines from "Spirits in the Material World."
As for him being ironic, if you know Steve, I don't think that's it. He's a very idealistic (and IMHO, naive) person when it comes to world affairs and humanity in general. Also in the free-form section, he mentions "immigration" and says to "let 'em all in." These aren't lines from some other songs -- these are his musings.
"There's no such thing as a winnable war" is a Sting line too. It's from his solo song "Russians"...........and by the way Ken5244, you are an absolute dick. Go listen to somebody else's music.
I did not know that line was from a Sting song (and artist H dislikes, ironically), so I stand corrected. Regardless of who came up with it first, the viewpoint is still ignorant and naive and represents typical leftist claptrap. History is replete with wars started by evil regimes (Nazi's, Communists, etc.) that were won by honorable, peaceful people (the U.S., Britian, etc.). Dishonest denial of that fact doesn't change its veracity.
Ditto that. Great band! One of my favorites and this song is probably my fav. But they are NOT gods, they are NOT ifallible, and they are NOT any more or less human that you or I. I do thank the REAL God for their existence though... ;-)
redlabel : exacly, they do fail, and through relating their faults on their songs can they show us we don't all have to be "perfect" people, like whatever the corporate image is of a "normal human being".
As for the "speak for yourself" Jadehand, I do hope you don't see yourself as a bug... If so, stop reading Kafka :D
