  • A total classic - the main solo by Steve Rothery is an absolute masterpiece - one of the all time best in my opinion... very delicate and structured.

  • Only just recognised when he sings part of The Police's Spirits In The Material World. Very cool.

  • To all the guys and grls that `Get it`... You are in the the company of the most superb band.. and THE most superb supporters any band living or dead.. Please... If you just don`t get Marillion, go someplace else!......

  • In the Album TEH STRANGE ENGINE this song time is 15,32 ... now its possible to publish it here ...

Do you have the Album??? it was great to ear this song complete ;)

  • Steve rothery is probebly the best guitarist to come out of england in the last 40 years

  • the sun on the equator... setting like an ember thrown to deep waters

from crimson to black, were coming back

    tomorrow

  • The 2 dislikes were obviously for political reasons because this is the greatest 10 minutes of live music i've ever heard

  • grande steve!!!!!!!!!!!!! grande!!!

  • "immigration - let 'em all in" = left wing shit

  • Beauteous.

  • H...... I thought we won the Second World war though!

I love the music but wish he wouldn't spout all this left wing shit.

  • @chipfire what do you mean with "left wing shit"?

  • Steve for President!

  • I love this song for it that has so much emotion for the fact that so often it is changed climate, such as game Rothery solos simply disarms me. Can someone tell me if this is someone who is these days playing the guitar so well? I am afraid not. This strange ... is one of those songs that Marillion memorable for many years and they still want to listen. I love Marillion:)

  • The solo drive me crazy - positive...

  • Probably the most underrated band in existence........

  • „let them all in...„ I like the best :-)

  • Mr Rothery you are truly magnificent.

  • Steve your solo is just fantastic - your guitar is crying, me to :(

  • Mr. Rothery rules!!!

  • fab .. my fav

  • Rothery makes his guitar sound like David Gilmour - it's not the speed, but the genuine feeling behind each note; such an underrated guitarist.

  • yes beautiful solo ...... but i like best the one on EASTER

  • 6:11 - steve hogarth for president. -

  • @BroadswordTULL Let em all in? How's that gonna work? Be prepared to be overrun.

  • @chipfire

you will never understand h's words.

A pity... but it won't hurt you, so never mind.

  • @BroadswordTULL I fully understand the otherwise wise Hogarth. It suspect it may well hurt my countries prospects.

  • @chipfire

if you'd fully understand the meaning of the words there'd be nothing to suspect.

  • Go ahead and clap one right off the wrist

  • Here I've sunk into my armchair. it's 03.22 in the morning. lights are off and I'm there among the audience.would my wife think I'm crazy if clapped with them? I don't care:)

  • Possibly the most intense and dramatic climax of any song ever...Genius : )

  • ,,what a beauitiful song,,

  • Comment removed

  • best guitar solo on earth.

  • Rothery is a genius. Hogarth too !

  • Inspired Rothery... I can fly w/ this solo. The voice of Roghart do the same. Cool!

  • Rothery's solos transcend godhood.

    there is little greater godhood.

    Feel. Live.

    Join me... in life...death.

  • My My, there is a god at work here, Rothery Rules....

    Amazing

  • now THAT ladies and gentlemen.. is what they refer ot in ROCK circles as.... THROWING DOWN.

  • Out of this world.

  • Blablabla..good, bad, or evil...

by the way...you forget Marbles, just to name one post-TSE album...Maybe the best concept album made by any band ever.

But here we go judging again...

Why don't you just enjoy what you like?

    poor soul!

  • Mysterious music i'm so fascinated this song but this album is not my favourite so i love this song !!!

  • The CD is not my favourite Marillion CD but this song is TOP !!!

  • I think the solo has like a mystic flair to it. ^^

It is so smooth-running and relaxed. Very cool.

  • 7:40- 7:50, wow! Really love this improvising in the middle of the song.. They rock live!

  • he sing a greet to the fans at 2:55.. so nice

i saw marillion live in cologne...

  • just beautiful music.

  • I love this man!

  • Maybe it's better if you didn't compare hogarth with fish. Both periods are great!

    Bleeeeeeeeegh

  • will everybody stop all this H versus fish shit.both of them were good but i prefer H

  • The first Marillion/Hogarth - Song that didn't make me fall asleep. Well, to be true, I woke up around 9:20. The guy can really sing emotional. Why not more often?

  • why not more often? maybe u should wake up BEFORE listening - you might notice that h always sings emotional.

  • right, it is your personal opinion, but not "fact".

  • Yes, my opinion, as I already said before. But if you see the necessity to repat it, go ahead! ;-)

  • u said "fact is", baby.

  • Comment removed

  • that is actually an elevator-opinion.

    :)

  • Maybe. But the elevator is going down. ;-)

  • give "marbles" a try. maybe you'll change your point of view... (?)

  • Like the intelligence of some of these YouTube comments ¬_¬

  • @Shellpink

    I know what you mean.

I had that in the beginning too.

But I see Marillion with Steve Hogart as a different band and they really have hundreds of songs that really are fantastic. You just never must compare them with the songs with Fish. Both are top of the bill for me. Only a different kind of music. Listen to it without looking for the Fish-sound. Then you might enjoy it !

  • only the best

    rothery is fab

  • Totally stunning! :)

  • simply marvellous!

  • Marillion has always knew how to deal with their fans...that's why they're special....

There aren't words enough to say how great this performance was...

  • I always find it so fantastic seeing the Greatest British Band Ever perform live. The first time I saw this (my all time favourite song with my all time second favourite guitar break - only Andy Latimer's 'Ice' is better in my view) performed live at Manchester Academy is probably the first time I ever made a fool of myself when sober. But hey, who cares as long as the music is this good.

  • all time great

  • Fab song one of my favs

  • Ken5244...You are a right-wing, homophobic, narrow-minded bigot and you can rightly go

fuck yourself with the biggest dildo in your closet. Marillion's wonderful music is not meant for an ignorant cunt like you. Insane Clown Posse would be more your speed...

  • Well, now we're getting down to it, aren't we? The real source of your venom is that you're a homosexual and resented my earlier comment? I figured that and have been waiting for you to tip your (limp) hand.

Right wing? Sorta, but not the way you're implying. Homophobic? No. That dishonest term implies that all people who disapprove of homosexuality do so because they're afraid of it. My disapproval has nothing to do with fear (or hatred), and I resent your dishonest accusation.

  • My personal attack on you was sweet, Kunt5244.

  • You can always tell a hardcore leftist a mile away. You can't engage in a civil conversation and succesfully debate a subject with facts or reason, so you resort to personal attacks and profanity. You ought to be really proud of yourself -- you're obviously a sophisticated thinker and a highly-advanced human being. *rolls eyes*

The irony here is that you don't even realize how much you're embarrassing yourself. As the expression goes, give some people enough rope & they'll hang themselves.

  • Re your other question about the meaning of the song: The "strange engine" is the human heart, and this song is Steve's autobiographical account of his own life. The boy who "wore a red coat and walked a bulldog, and saw his reflection in the mirror of the lake" is him. The lyrics progress chronologically throughout his early life.

I love the song; it's just the free-form musings in this live version that I disagree with. But as I said, I know his heart is in the right place.

  • Thank you Ken5244 for your very elaborating comments. I'm about to be convinced about H's naivity when it comes to worldaffairs - which unfortunately goes for a lot of musicians and artists. But H is still a fantastic song and lyric writer.

  • No problem. I didn't have enough space before to elaborate further about H's statements, but it's just been a series of disappointing views that he's expressed over the last several years that I've disagreed with. He's very anti-American, he believes homosexuality if fine, he's against incarcerating criminals, he apparently believes in open borders, and in general is a "one-world" guy.

But like you say, a lot of artists have similar views. And like you, I still admire his talent (a lot).

  • Ooops ... typo: In the third sentence of my previous post, the word "if" should have been "is."

  • Steve H's free-form musings in the middle of the song are a bit disappointing. "No such thing as a winnable war"? Sorry, but that's just stunningly naive. Luckily for him, his parents' generation did WIN World War II against the Nazi's or he wouldn't even have been here to sing this song. What was the alternative? "Choose peace" by refusing to defend themselves, and be exterminated?

That said, a brilliant song by a band and a guy who I know mean well and have good intentions. :-)

  • Hey Ken5244 - take it easy. H is being ironic. I don't recognize that specific text but I suppose that H was singing lyrics from other artists songs, like the Police ("there is no policitcal solution"). But when we are at it - I never really understood the message in the song This Strange Engine - any comments?

  • Hi, gloggolyt,

Yes, you're spot on. He was singing a Police lyric in there as well: a few lines from "Spirits in the Material World."

As for him being ironic, if you know Steve, I don't think that's it. He's a very idealistic (and IMHO, naive) person when it comes to world affairs and humanity in general. Also in the free-form section, he mentions "immigration" and says to "let 'em all in." These aren't lines from some other songs -- these are his musings.

  • "There's no such thing as a winnable war" is a Sting line too. It's from his solo song "Russians"...........and by the way Ken5244, you are an absolute dick. Go listen to somebody else's music.

  • I did not know that line was from a Sting song (and artist H dislikes, ironically), so I stand corrected. Regardless of who came up with it first, the viewpoint is still ignorant and naive and represents typical leftist claptrap. History is replete with wars started by evil regimes (Nazi's, Communists, etc.) that were won by honorable, peaceful people (the U.S., Britian, etc.). Dishonest denial of that fact doesn't change its veracity.

As for your personal attack on me, back at 'ya.

  • Their bassist and guitarist are amazing. I NEED to listen to these guys more.

  • Pure brilliance, love this band more and more!

  • Damn, he really sounds like Dave.

  • Saw them last saturday in cologne.

The played this song and it was so great.

    **Marillion forever!!**

  • To good to be true! Excellent!

  • wonderful, absolutely moving!!!

  • Don't get any better than this! do check out part 1

  • Gods among insects

  • speak for yourself. they are good musicians, with huge sensitivity and touch deep inside. but they are just as normal as you and me, not gods...

  • Ditto that. Great band! One of my favorites and this song is probably my fav. But they are NOT gods, they are NOT ifallible, and they are NOT any more or less human that you or I. I do thank the REAL God for their existence though... ;-)

  • redlabel : exacly, they do fail, and through relating their faults on their songs can they show us we don't all have to be "perfect" people, like whatever the corporate image is of a "normal human being".

As for the "speak for yourself" Jadehand, I do hope you don't see yourself as a bug... If so, stop reading Kafka :D

  • best band ever
