Not so much dire commercials, but a gullible population! Years before this ad came out, I pondered to myself the idea of marketing "tomato soup with reduced ascorbic acid" (presumably to those few who get too much) without telling people what it is, and I predicted within a few years a scurvy epidemic--people would be baffled why all of those "good for ya" high vitamin C foods also seem to contain "nasty" ascorbic acid. This ad expresses the same idea, less sarcastically, and hilariously!
