On our score, this was not labeled, "Russian Folk Music",,,,it was called, Slavonic Folk Suite-Children's Carol. I played French Horn 2. My other favorite of that era: "Sonus Ventorum"--both difficult pieces to play as they involved a lot of control otherwise they sounded sharp or flat.
my advice for the horn section...well the first horn lol the last little bit where we do E down to an A (i think at least..well i know its an A),...GO FOR THE UPPER OCTAVE. more triumphant and glorious. (plus it makes you feel awesome!) fantastic song and im a little bias being first horn..epic parts!
now that youtube allows videos to exceed 15:00 you should repost the song in its entirety :) that would make this classic song even more awesome without the horrid break right in the middle (thanks youtube)
We played this when I was a Senior in HS @ Symphonic Band Competition. The last part always gave me chills and even now, I can still remember how proud we were that we played this--Love the chimes and tympani at the end---AWESOME!
@1955marfa We played this as well in HS, in marching band. It was our end piece and the crowd would always stand and applaud. By the way, is that "marfa" as in Marfa, Texas. If so, we used to live very close to each other.
@Mikey5406 Hello there! Yes, I am from Marfa. You know the band directors in TX got their approved music list from the UIL and a lot of schools would perform the same pieces--we could hear them at marching and concert contests in Odessa. Sadly, bands nowadays don't march like we used to--"Military Style". It's all about how many swirls they can do during their shows and they get to a position and stop and then they play. We would have to play the whole show marching up and down the field.
In high school, we performed this piece under the guidance of Gene Davis. As tympanist... I confess this piece completely blew me away. Our performance completely blew the audience away as well. Listening to it not moves me to tears...
youre absolutly right, vefanturs. the only version that counts! very good intonation. but where`s the power gone?? russian bears??haha! dont know how to listen to it - but there`s a version from "stadtmusikkapelle Landeck" it`s so awsome powerfulls -. never heard something like that! look for them!!
youre right, vefanturs! this is teh only version in ´wich the tempis are correct. intonation is ok. but on the end its a little powerless. i only heard once a realy good version - badly its not on youtube. maybe - if your interessted, you can contact the "stadtmusikkapelle Landeck" in austria. the played a live-version. in my opinion its the "real" version. actually its played by an amatuerorchestra. you wont believe it if you hear it!!
Who performed this? This is one of the best versions I've ever heard. The last 2 minutes moved me to tears AGAIN!!! There's just something about this piece that is so emotional. Maybe because I played it twice?
omg i'm such a simp!! i marched this song in my freshman yr and we rocked ever mach we attended, got high music and all...i've been looking for this song since 2003 and here it is, y am i a simp? because i'm crying my ass off!! thank you so flippin much for posting this!!!
This entire song gives me chills every time I listen to it! I never even notice it's length I get so absorbed in the beauty of it! I played it in a concert a few hours ago, and it was definitely the best piece I think I've played in a long time!
my highschool's playing this next week for a concert... im first chair horn. makes my embouchure hurt just thinking about those triple forte high gs and As... oucch
We played this for my symphonic band concert today at Elizabethtown College, and I've totally fallen in love with it. I love the bass drum rolls I get during the climax and the end.
Well I hope you think it's decent becuase it's the Tokyo Kosei Wind Ochestra haha. Next to the Dallas Symphony, they are one of the finest concert bands in the world.
I have been searching for a good Russian Christmas Music version for a good 30 minutes now and this is the only one that does it justice! Thank you for posting this.

It is the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. One of the most famous wind ensembles in the world. They did a lot of recording projects with Alfred Reed.
