  • are there bits missing?

  • Note that Germany and Russia were allies thru til June 1941.

  • thes cun-triee, is at waah, with Gea-mny ...

  • @odessa146 Oh, I see from your profile that you probably are BNP so I guess not. I will end this conversation therefore by celebrating the fact that there are more of us (White British who love and embrace difference) than there are of you (scared, paranoid haters) I hope you are able to overcome whatever it is that makes you so terrified of change and wish you luck for your long hard journey.

  • @odessa146 If we had lost India during the war we would have struggled more. If we had lost bases in Turkey we would have struggled more. If weren't able to distract Hitler/ the Italians in North Africa we would have struggled more. This series shows the situation was on a constant knife edge and campaigns involving Moslims were crucial to the outcome. Do you now see the point that Jack Straw was making and the importance, in context (BNP claiming WWII heros as theirs), of him making it?

  • @odessa146 Very few "White Christians" are entirely white. Fewer still are in any significant way Christian. I'm not quite sure what your point is old boy, but have you also been counting how many White Christian Nazis were trying to enslave the rest of Europe during the 30s and 40s?

  • @odessa146 "jack straw mp stated on question time about 18 months ago that if it wasnt for the muslim fighters we would all be speaking german now ive seen this series many times but never seen any muslim fighters fighting for the allies."

Minority? Majority? Who cares? Of course the majority of British soldiers were white, though I doubt very much they actually took Jesus as their saviour. Nearly 90,000 Indian troops died in the second world war. 30 received the VC. Many would be Moslim

  • @odessa146 East African campaign; North African Campaign; Operation Compass; Operation Battleaxe; Operation Crusader; First Battle of El Alamein; Second Battle of El Alamein; Anglo-Iraqi War

Syria-Lebanon campaign; Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran; Italian campaign; Battle of Monte Cassino; Battle of Hong Kong; Battle of Malaya; Battle of Singapore; Burma Campaign ; Battle of Kohima; Battle of Imphal . . .

A few HISTORICAL FACTS for you there. I'll leave you to go and read some books.

  • @odessa146 What a shock! That most footage taken from the time (mainly Allied and Nazi war propaganda) shows very English or very German, white men being ever so brave and ever so strong. Who do you think was helping to protect British interests in India? Indian people, of all religions, fighting under the British flag. That's who. Think!

  • i don't understand your episode order and markings

  • this is an excellent series but compromised somewhat in that it was made BEFORE it was possible to speak openly about Bletchley Park and the breaking of the Enigma code. this as well as American industrial might and Russian manpower was critical in the defeat of the Axis.

  • @055697

The producer mentions that in the recently produced extras on the DVD set... "Ultra" was a HUGE resource for the allies. He also mentions that the war in the Pacific was not well covered in the series.

  • @055697 The war was won with British brains, American brawn, and Russian blood.

  • The general thought of the British people on hearing Chamberlain's speech on the wireless; 'Oh no...not again...'

  • "Perfect weather for a holiday, or invading Poland"...Imao. I could've sworn that was his own line....Lawrence Olivier has got to be the greatest Narrator of the 20th Century.

  • @azz578 and the greatest actor, of all time

  • 4.30 mins was a close on

  • Didin't soviet union attacked Poland at the same time as Germany? If so,

why didin't France and Britan declared war on Soviet union?

  • the pact the British signed with the Polish contained a provision stipulating that assistance would only come if they were attacked by Germany, hence the lack of declaration of war on the Soviets.

  • good question though.

  • @razhurs. The Soviets entered east poland as a "military operation" without declaring war & under the pretence of "protecting" the citizens of Ukraine and Belarus under threat from nazi invaded collapsing Poland. We now know there was a pre-agreed secret protocol between Germany and Soviet to carve up Poland. While the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was in place, England & France needed to cling to the hope that at some stage the Soviet Union could be won over to the Allies. Hence, why declare war?

  • Comment removed

  • Why protect Polen...?

  • Poland had the UK and France as "allies". Then the "phony war" ensued. Now Poland is in NATO-but what does that really mean? An EU talk shop if there is real trouble? As strong as the USA is militarily it is time to formulate Plan B for the protection of Poland.

  • Ultimatums are incredibly stupid, no one responds to them be like Hitler (funny enough Israel) by striking fast and real hard immediately.

  • When Germany invaded Poland was it initially about taking the Polish Corridor?

And if people are so angry at Chamberlain for appeasement what did they expect him to do, when Europe WAS SO WEAK-- "powerful" France is humiliated in just months, and Hitler was smart enough to secure agreement with Russia which he was foolish enough to break later.... albeit if not for harsh conditions for his overstretched army he would have been successful.

Invasion of weak nations is what nationalism gets you!

  • The invation of poland was all part of the broad plan for eastward expansion (living space).

Possibly Chambalin should never have made the Munich agreement and stood up to Germany whilst they were relativly weak. But you can't knock a man for doing what ever he can do avoid a major war.

The German failure on the eastern front is due to many factors. One of the major ones was Hitlers increasing involvement in military decisions and Starlins decreasing involvement.

  • I spelt Stalin wrong. and invasion.

  • @ fkgff.....lol we forgive u on the basis of sharing ur enlightenment ;-)

  • Yes, it was ANNNDD the establishment of the

THIRD REICH, and world's greatest power. Give a German a gun he wants to conquer the East lollll. That is why they still have no army to this day.

Chamberlain could not DO ANYTHING TO STOP,

look up Phoney War versus Germany during invasion of Poland- IT WAS FAKE

France and England did nothing because they could not DO ANYTHING. Nobody wanted to fight but the Germans who were so incredibly wronged in WWI

  • German troops on re-occupying the rhineland were under orders to withdraw if the French resisted. In the years leading up to the war Hitler was also testing the waters with England and France. Breaking the versailles limit in army size, the founding of the luftwaffe and the kreigsmarine. Anschluss. The occupation of the sudetenland leading to the Munich agreement. The sebsequent occupation of Czechoslovakia. From the early 30's on there were signs of what was coming and opportunities to act.

  • But I agree with you in principal. The first world war fresh in the minds of the worlds leaders. Nobody is going to jump into a war willingly, Ofcourse diplomacy is the logical option. And the world being in the midst of a global depression I doubt Britain had the funds or war materials for any major military option.

  • do you agree with the fact that the entire war, was of the WESTERN countries doing? A very foolish idea to create nations that NEVER SHOULD HAVE EXISTED. And were subsequently destroyed by Nazis, later dictated by USSR.

A war that liberated France who was stupid enough to declare war in the first place. Because the west left Eastern Europe under a far worse leader with Soviets. But I guess the Soviets are easier to deal with and beat than the leadership of Nazis.

  • stupid fuker war

  • 9:18 - had the HINDENBERG TRAGEDY already happened at this point?

  • So who made you so stupid?

  • My guess is that you have a really ignorant family. I would advise thinking for yourself rather than continue the stupidity. Try and do something with you life that helps humanity, rather than bringing us all down to your hatred. If you don't do something about it in this life, you will go down a notch in the food chain - and by the way - you are pretty low right now.

  • Get a life

  • @spungray,lol I know dont these people realise theyre abit late with it all

  • Ignorance must be a family tradition for you.

  • Hopefully there aren't any Jew Directors in Hell or else you'll spend eternity being pissed after you die

  • @PABLINGAT1972

Sects work like that; if someone is not in the group they must be lying, therefore they may simply be ignored. It's a great way to avoid actually thinking. To protect your beliefs from criticism. If you watch the North Korean state-run media channel you can see this pattern very shamelessly, everything the opponents of that country claim is simply shoved under the heading of enemy's propaganda, and no reference to facts is needed anymore! Very convenient.

  • Perfect weather for a late holiday. Or invading Poland.

  • The world is a sewer for you, because that is what you choose to see it as. I'm sorry that you were abused as a child, but don't project your troubles on all of humanity. If you want life to be good, it will be.

I suggest Viktor Frankl's 1956 book "Man's Search for Meaning". It might give you some insight into what a meaningful life is & what is a futile effort to spread the hate that you want to inflict on others.

BTW - you don't have a mind of your own. Read Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer"

  • What a sad idiot you are....i feel sorry for you..!

  • I cant agree any more :P

  • Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Euro.

  • Ein idiot...!

  • Comment removed

  • oh no another conspiracy idiot.... please indeed tell that to my own family members who suffered from the holocaust... they would kill you on the spot for instance my grandfather who was born in a jewish family in Holland and his whoa family killed in front of his eyes and getting his right hand cut off and stepped on.... my grandfather escaped but will never forget the horrors..

  • I feel very bad for the poles. They were the first to suffer the Nazi wrath.(excluding Jews) They lost many people and even when they finally got their country liberated the Russian's took it over.

    God bless Poland!

  • have 2 admit im english and we suffered in ww2 .but poland and there people have suffered more than is humanly possible . ..

  • creepy music.

  • God bless Poland !!!!

  • WTF? Which one is it, retard? They hated one another, you can't pick both sides. One's Fascist the other is Communist..duuur, stupid

  • Poland will not die, as long as we still liveth!

(Great National Anthem, by the way!)

  • The rest is history. We have it behind us and a good sign for future is the fact that I'm going for beer with my German friends this weekend. :) Amazing how life turns.

  • PP stands for people or pee pee? If you would know some history Germans started it - Over thousand years ago. It was German politicians saying that Poles should be wiped completely. (Not to quote Bismark...). Those massacres were VERY SERIOUS look less than 100 people died omg! 5600000 Poles were killed in righteous revenge! Heh you are pathetic, while I sit here in POLISH Stetin, thanks for the city we really deserved it for the massacres.

  • Big shares? It disappeared in first month of war, what kind of big shares could Poland have? Being attacked first? Starting pointless uprisings or having biggest share of its civilians killed?

  • True is that Its "Poland" in English not polen... There was a massacre but two days after war started. Mainly due to confusion in battle. That's what sources say, if you believe otherwise it's your problem.

  • I'm only leaving this guys (I assume that this is a lonely white male) posts up to show that these people are out there - and they will keep working to re-write history - defending the undefendable any way they can.

  • The Holocaust never happened?? Really?? I suppose you also believe the earth is flat and that Santa Clause is real.

I suggest you pick up the book, "Denying history" by Michael Shermer and Alex Grobman. It was written for people like you. However, I suppose that you won't. I have the feeling that you prefer ignorance to the truth; and the false belief that you are right and others are wrong.

Freedom of speech means you can say what you want; but we don't have to listen.

  • Even if your so called facts are true, are they an excuse for what the Nazis did? you sick fuck

  • They didn't want to die for Danzig. They died nevertheless.

  • *Yawn*

  • "don´t belive what you read in schoolbooks because there are only lies "

Yes, only lies.... have you talked with a mental health professional lately? Other posts you deny the holocaust and find a new and creative "history" and now the school books are ALL lies.

Yes, the winners write the history, but the basic facts come through.

By the way - your side LOST.

  • War does not determine who is right, only who is left.

  • what's that polish march at the end?

    8:20

  • Polonaises Op. 40

  • the "brass" version of CHOPIN'S POLONAISE OP.40 NO.1 "MILITARY". It's originally a piano piece. The famous Polish American pianist said it's the symbol of Polish glory, along with Op.53 "Heroic".

  • i really enjoy these war at world docus v interesting LO is a gr8 narrator. There is always going to be if onlys and what ifs etc but the fact of the matter is it was inevitable that war would happen as it was always in the mind of Hitler. The same can be said today of a lot of the worlds leaders as its definatly profitable to conduct war for power and pilage etc

  • i live in ireland and i have to say lawrence olivier who starred in the battle of britain is a fantastic narrator.

He`s that good that i bought the dvd set.

even tom cruise is a big fan.

  • If only Chamberlin had a spine World war 2 might never of happened.Giving up the Sudeten land at Munich only furhter convinced Hitler that the allies were spineless

  • Hindsight is always an advantage. To think that Germany would have backed down or held to their post WW I borders is not reasonable.

I don't think that marching around within their borders was a possibility at that point.

The rest of the world was not ready for war. The "appeasement" gave Britain time to build to strength.

Like Clint Eastwood said - you've got to know your limitations. George W Bush was declaring that he was going to bring democracy to the entire Middle East 4+ years ago.

  • A really good source of information regarding the Munich conference can be found in the book "entitled the rise and fall of Nazi Germany".The German general staff was prepared to overthrow Hitler in the event he carried out his threat to invade Czechoslovakia. Thanks to Chamberlin that never happened and the rest is history.

  • As I said, in hindsight...

So what prevented one of those German Generals from communicating that to Chamberlain and the West?

We are always smarter in hindsight. Where was the groundswell of popular opinion in England to go over and engage in a war with Germany - 20 years after "The War To End All Wars"?

Those who see Churchill as that voice of wisdom, forget that he had been the architect of the Gallipoli disaster 20 years before.

War is $ell. The winners are always the arms makers.

  • Probably loss of nerve at the key moment when the Czechs announced their mobilization plans for their armed forces.Cases green I believe it was called for the plan to destroy Czechoslovakia. The Czech's had the fortifications along the border as well as 32 well trained infantry and Armored divisions.I think the German general staff understood what they were up against but vacillated just long enough for the arrival of Chamberlin to let them off the hook.Cowardice on both sides I guess

  • who's the music called at 8:20?

  • Bloody Polish, all that death and we have them here in droves now :(

  • twat

  • 5:11 is crazy footage...

  • "The victor will not be asked whether he told the truth"

Thanks for this great quotation! So true in the whole course of history. It was put in fewer words, 2200 years earlier, when the Gauls took Rome: "Vae victis!"

  • I will provide a propagandistic casus belli. Its credibility doesn't matter.

"The victor will not be asked whether he told the truth"

    Adolf Hitler 22 August 1939

  • What's the primary source for that quote?

  • Think you can even find it on Wiki, otherwise type the quote on google and you will surely find something...

  • From the Gleiwitz Incident Wiki: The Gleiwitz incident was only a part of a larger operation, carried out by Abwehr and SS forces.[3] At the same time as the Gleiwitz attack there were other incidents orchestrated by Germany along the Polish-German border, such as house torching in the Polish Corridor and spurious propaganda output. The entire project, dubbed Operation Himmler and comprising 21 incidents in all,[6] was intended to give the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany.[5]...

  • For months prior to the 1939 invasion German newspapers and politicians like Adolf Hitler accused Polish authorities of organizing or tolerating violent ethnic cleansing of ethnic Germans living in Poland.[6][7]

On the day following the Gleiwitz attack, 1 September 1939, Germany launched the Fall Weiss operation — the invasion of Poland — initiating World War II in Europe...

  • On the same day, in a speech in the Reichstag, Adolf Hitler cited the 21 border incidents, with three of them called very serious, as justification for Germany's "defensive" action against Poland.[6] Just a few days earlier, on 22 August, he told his generals "I shall give a propaganda reason for starting the war; whether it is plausible or not. The victor will not be asked whether he told the truth."[3][5]

    References for the quote:

"The victor will not be asked whether he told the truth"

  • Ehh yes indeed... but as you know for sure, a Casus belli is in other words (latin) an excuse or reason for war!

  • Okay so you really don't know what the source is, and if it is authentic.

  • It is authentic...

Like i said you can find it if you look for it (apperently you didnt)...

To give ya a hint, France and England only declared war on Germany while the Soviets did the very same thing as Germany (invading Poland), today that fact is mocked away and seems all normall you know why?

Becaus the victors wont be asked if they told the truth......

  • You don't know that it's authentic because you can't cite a primary source. I have looked for the original source of that quote even before I asked you. All that I have found are uses of the alleged quote that cite no primary source.

  • right...:S

Then it doesnt excist for you, fine with me.

I doubt anybody can "really" confirm those words today.

  • All I am asking for is a primary source. That could be one of Hitler's books, or a speech, or a book that somebody else wrote claiming that they heard him say it. It is quite feasible to provide such a source if the quote is genuine, and perhaps even if it is not.

  • its real, we have it on the History channel here in the UK, it's called World at War and its the same man speaking as here

  • The fact that you heard it too doesn't make it real. I have found the source of the alleged quote and its authenticity is disputed..... The narrator is actor Sir Lawrence Olivier.

  • Now you have Bush and his amerikan missiles on your land..

Do you think you are safer??

    Has history taught you nothing.?

You'll be first to go in a crisis..

  • It was all for nothing...Nothing

Great heroes fell,, blood and soil,,

    All for Gordon the moron...

  • wow, these are some great programs...

Documetries on the TV now are Garbage... they just put one sicko after another up there that aspouts garbage...

I have never seen a WWII documentry as good as this in my life... and i am a amatur historian... i love the archive film... you NEVER see that any more... all they show now is a few homosexuals talking about thier opinion... i hate the history channel now...

  • Chamberlain was fucking coward.

  • I don't think it was cowardice so much as it was misplaced values. By Chamberlain's reasoning, nothing was worse than war. By Churchill's more logical reasoning, several things were worse than war. Slavery was worse than war, he said. Dishonor was worse than war. Churchill never wanted war, but he at least correctly perceived when war was worth the cost.

  • Intelligently and beautifully put. Thank you.

  • I also disagree with chamberlains lack of action, although i would not have put it so colourfully. However, it is important to note that chamberlaind had seen the atrocities of WW1, and had no desire to start a second world war. Despite this, i still strongly disagree with Chamberlainds Appeasment Policy. All it takes for evil to prevail, is for good men to do nothing.

  • I love this series. I own it on DVD, it's the best all around documentry on WWII I have ever seen.

  • Yes lead the charge to free Pomerania,Silesia, and East Prussia from Polish BARBARISM!

  • historic programme

  • ciulstwo pokazuja zjebanych szfabów

  • Hey now. Lets all get along here Pols and Anglos. We're all allies, must keep up the united front.

     :-P

  • The British Film Institute describes Thames as having "served the capital and the network with a long-running, broad-based and extensive series of programmes, several of which either continue or are well-remembered today."[1]

Thames covered a broad spectrum of commercial public-service television, with a strong mix of drama, current affairs and comedy. The company's logo remains widely recognisable and was accompanied by a fanfare called "Salute To Thames", composed by Johnny Hawksworth.

  • That is all very interesting information archiebunkerville. But, I have to wonder how much Thames is paying you?

  • *LOL*GET REAL!... they OWN it and can have it pulled off anytime they want - so if it were a rep... Don't you think that Jeremy Isaacs and Thames Television deserve it? Imagine if they had not invested the time and money to create this in the 70's - how many of the people interviewed are still alive?

  • cant you post more???

  • FYI - THE BEST way to see if you want to buy the whole series is to rent them from Netflix/blockbuster. Netflix has the entire series, and with a cheap one month membership - or even free trial, you can see them all! Most good library systems also have the full 26 hour series on VHS or DVD & "Making of" DVD

  • thanks for posting this

  • My honor to do so. I hope that Ken Burns' "The War" will motivate more people to watch "The World At War" There is a lot in it that people need to re-learn.

  • thanks brit for thames productions ;D

  • It still operates today, although as an independent producer and on a much smaller scale. Following a merger by its owner FremantleMedia with Talkback Productions it is now known as Talkback Thames.

  • Thames Television was a franchise holder of the British ITV television network, serving London on weekdays between 1968 and 1992. It was both a broadcaster and a producer of television programmes, making shows both for the local region it covered and for networking nationally across the ITV regions.

  • This is a brilliantly in-depth and candid series. Thanks for posting them. Shame they'll never get as many hits as a Britney Spears video.
