Ummmm, that isn't a loving gesture. The Caucasian shepherd is asserting its dominance over the other dog. You'll notice that the other dog (Shepherd mix?) is baring its teeth, not in defense or aggression, but in submission. These dogs have established a pecking order. Not my place to judge, but some behaviorists/trainers (Cesar Millan, one famous example) feels that owners should take the lead and discourage dogs from choosing their own roles and ranks in the "pack."

@MarrilandSAB Yuo possibly saw one from the post-soviet breeds, have I right? Quiet a few generations of thees are masively used for dogfighting officialy to "test it's working qualities" (wich I see as a ruin of a collective-working dog breed), noting special it is dominant upon other dogs.

@GrigoriZhukov I dunno, isn't his whole mantra, "Animal first, then species, then breed, then individual" or whatever? So, he'd be pooping on his whole philosophy by picking and choosing which breeds he will and won't work with. Anyhow, I suppose if it's true, someone will bring evidence of it to the surface sooner or later. Must admit, I'm a fan of the show, but I try to take everything with a grain of salt.

I am on my second Caucasian mountain dog, I love them, great guard dogs, but very, very powerful animals, NEVER get one of these dogs unless you know what your about. But they are the best with the family.

@EXYQ well, you could not be more wrong :) whats not petting, thats caucasian showing his dominance. This is good example how people think dogs are human-like, this is the reason behind most dog problems like "bad" behavior, thou its actualy bad owner behavior. I must say it realy looks like he is petting that pup tho... :)
