I used to ride this when I was younger. I remember that because they had operators the ride was always different each time. Some operators were careful and wouldn't let the train gain too much speed, while others were maybe a bit too careless ;P It's a fun ride.
@PutBoy - Yes, that's is why it is such a classic ride, and such a shame there are so few of these gems left. Fun and a slightly different experience each time.
@WorldPilot - Not any more...the trains at Bakken have no longer got a brakeman...in fact I believe on the track at bakken a ridge on the wheels does act as an underwheel, but I agree you do get a lot of good airtime (well, you did with the old trains...I understand the ride is not as good now with the new trains, with less speed and airtime)
The reason for having a conductor/brakeman on the train is that the train is not locked to the track. If you look closely at the track, you will see there is no way to employ the three-wheel "claw" arrangement present on modern-day roller coasters. When I visited, the conductors would allow the train to take one of the last turns before a dip a mite too fast, so that as the train accelerated out of the turn, the last car would lift off the track an inch or so. ...continued...
You are correct, there are no brakeman-operated scenic railways in USA anymore, and there are only about 8 operating in the World, most of them in Europe.
It isn't...it is the 3rd oldest in the world. Leap the Dips (Lakemont Park) is the oldest (1902) followed by the Scenic Railway in Luna Park, Australia (1912).
I'd love to ride a old side friction coaster with a brake man on board unfortunately, we don't have one in the US. We do have a side friction coaster here called Leap the Dips in Altoona, PA which happens to be the worlds oldest as it was built in 1902. But it only has one car trains and not much for speed either.
I have ridden Leap the Dips in both 2001 and 2006. UK had one of those and two years ago it got bulldozed. Leap the Dips is the only example of that type of coaster remaining...please look after it! Scenic Railways with brakemen are very rare, with only 8 operating worldwide. They are good fun.
The one at Bakken in Denmark is even quicker! Scandinavia is a real treat for coaster lovers, especially the scenic railways. The parks have excellent fun houses too.
Well, they are both in Denmark. I think the Bakken one is the more intense, but riding them both last year the Tivoli one was a nicer ride. We rode the Tivoli one at 1 o'clock in the morning!
As far as I know it was always like that. All the scenic railways in Scandinavia have fast cable lifts. The one at Bakken is really fast. Old technology eh!
this is not denmarks from the first place, this is from the amusement park in malmoe but the amusement park was shut down in the year 1921 so it moved to copenhagen denmark and now it stands there :)
I don't think your facts are incorrect...the coaster has been at Tivoli Gardens since 1914 or 1915, but it was indeed at Baltic Fair in Malmo in 1914.
yeah, a brakeman rides the last seat, flying/flailing. crazy job! no track brakes - he pulls a handle in the car. see the other train up ahead when the pov pulls into the station? they use (used?) spacing signals to run 2 trains safely at once. but how would you ever stop one on those hills? cool at night, too.
you are rght about leap the dips. it was build in 1912 and is operating today, but t was closed over many season because of laking maintenece. rutschebanen has never bbin closed over a single season.
aww man I remember that one ^_^ ... we drove it ont he middle of the night didn't we? O.o or was that the next morning? hmm anyways, it was pretty good ^_^
Linnanmäki in Helsinki still has brakemen in this kind of coaster :)
