  • I love the pics in the foreground.

  • Satch you always do it best brother

  • This is in my opinion the most difficult guitar solo Eddie has done.

  • i call flawless!

  • nice playing

  • haha true man the plexi gets low gain i have no clue how eddie got his live tone out of it. well he did always have his amp cranked all the fucking way up and the frankys body was a very thick heavy wood and the neck maple u already know this probably i babble alot. i think an over drive pedal is what u want if the gain is cuttin back on ya the classic remake ibanez tube screamer has good reviews u shud try it

  • @frankenstrat25 my plexi does not lack gain haha It has been modified by a brown sound expert :)

  • @satchbooggy Suprisingly Eddie's had little to no mods except for the Variac and Eddie's thrown up smoke screens for years saying either it was turned down (75-90 volts) or turned up (120-140 volts), so even there, you have to risk blowing up your tubes to get "that sound". John Suhr examined Ed's amp as had a few others and said it was a typical, bone stock Super Lead from the 12xxx serial number production.

"Brown sound" comes from the heart and fingers.

  • @DarthKazi I agree his tone is 90% fingers. He could make any amp sound amazing, but the new amps are just too much. Lost all of that old school clarity. I personally think VH II was the best tone on record. Then WACF. I also find it very hard to believe his amp wasnt modified in some way....but hell who will ever know?

  • @satchbooggy I can't post links I guess, so Google, "Woody Tone The Final Word About EVH’s Super Lead?" and you'll get the article. John Suhr worked on Ed's "holy grail" and revealed it was stock from what he could tell. “The bottom line for me is when I saw it the amp was 100% untouched [no mods] except for filter caps and one added part...a very minor addition...giving it a slight bit more bass in the treble channel"

  • @DarthKazi i think he biased them really really hot also. When I learned how to bias (which is not hard), I used to push the top tolerance all the time. It sounds so fucking great....BUT..tubes will blow pretty quickly. Eddie could do it because he was in the big show and could switch to another head. I guess the way for us mere mortals is to have our heads modified.

  • @headlesssoldier He also used the "big bottle" 6CA7 tubes which were pentode "EL34" types but had more of a 6L6 response and tone.... which probably was why he eventually switched to 6L6 amps. Luckily JJ (Tesla) makes a GOOD 6CA7 tube, so those "tone chasers" can get that sound out of their Marshall with less effort. I'm thinking of getting a set for my Crate VC60 which is essentially a Marshall 1987 circuit with one extra preamp tube.

  • @satchbooggy Mr. Bray? :)

  • @frankenstrat25 He used an echoplex which ads gain and his MXR phaser was modded by Jose Arrandando (his amp guy) to give more gain and treble (and less noise) for leads.

After they "made it", he stopped using the old Plexi live and used regular, modern (for the time) Marshalls live which had a bit more balls.

  • @DarthKazi my marshall has tons of gain but its a bit too bitey. not sure if its my pickups or cab or both etc. I need to really warm it up some how for the VH II tone. The VH I tone is incredible but i prefer the darker warmer VH II tone.

  • @satchbooggy dude u want warm tone get a PAF pickup its all eddie used on the first albums i think

  • @frankenstrat25 I've read that he would use the variac to lower his voltage to 90% then he would go out of the amp to his effects then into an H&H power amp then into his speakers all the knobs dimed on his amp. Killer Tone! Nice job on my favorite Van Halen song BTW!

  • good stuff man the last dood is a fuck stick man you sound absalutly brilliant 10 out of 10 cheers from down under wally

  • This makes me sad. Why, in the early 80s was EVH running like a madman all over teh neck, tapping across all 6 strings like a maniac and yet now (and for a looooong time now) has barely managed to muster enough effort to tap beyond the top two strings.

Multi string tapping, tap slides, scalr/position shifts - he was on fire with tapping long before the LA crowd supposedly took tapping further - by playing the exact kinda stuff whilst EVH regressed into one or two string tapping.

  • Nice job on the solo! Pretty damn close to EV himself!

  • at around 0:07 how the hell did you make that squeak noise?

  • whats the tuning?

  • they have nothin to do besides tour and let their former band mates release new albums (chickenfoot) they released 2 greatest hits albums they released a demos CD but theres still enough for 12 albums idk why ed wont release them. its really amazing

  • i mean he really fucks up sometimes like once he played the little dreamer solo in an entirely different key i mean sounded like shit im fine with him doin a lil fiddly diddly bullshit in between the versus and stuff but he fucks up so bad. who wud have ever thought sober eddie is worse than wasted eddie

  • i might be fucked up in the head but usually the ONLY way i like Halen is true to the original..i like the songs exactly the way they were recorded. No improv can improve on those old songs in most cases (imo).. he probably gets bored as fuck playing them but still. I wish he would re-record and release all the old unreleased originals. that would make him a fortune

  • @frankenstrat25 There are numerous former alcoholics (Clapton, Page, Jimmy Vaughn and Eddie) who have said it's hard to play sober when you've been playing drunk your whole life. Eddie learned to play sitting on his bed drinking "Schlitz Malt Talls" when he was a teenager. Take away the beer and the brain has to readjust. It's not an excuse. It's biochemistry. I'm sure Eddie will be back on track. My only concern is his arthritis.

  • @DarthKazi right on bro. u know what im talkin about and yes i hope his arthritis gets better too and i also hope he stops using the wah

  • @frankenstrat25 Oh I don't know. When players who can actually play use a Wah, like Hendrix, Satch and Eddie, it sounds so much better. These guys don't hide behind it to cover up bad technique. Wah can be a very cool addition to a solo as long as it's tasteful and Eddie does use it sparingly as of the FUCK album. I don't care what effects he uses... as long as he releases another record before I'm dead. ;)

  • @DarthKazi nah eddie doesnt use the wah for solos and stuff anymore he turns it on puts it all the way down and leaves it like that it kills his tone i just hate it

  • @frankenstrat25 i agree his newer tone sucks. its way to distorted and riddled with useless effects. effects are for chumps like me that need to mask their shitty playing. eddie NEEDS to go back to 5150 and blow the dust off an old marshall and just let the tapes roll. He would sell millions to go back to the OLD formula everyone wants and loves !

  • @satchbooggy ya the 5150 3 is an amp built by eddie but hes a tone chaser. but if u also look at most of the guys who own a 51503 are EVH fanatics and heavy metal guitarists. ill take a marshall plexi or a 1960 lead over a 5150 any day

  • @frankenstrat25 ive had all 3 variations of the 5150 and the 5150 II sounds the best. Its better than the III when dialed in. Im using a plexi/1960 now and its even better but it is very unforgiving...it showcases my shitty playing haha

  • @satchbooggy Eh, I'd say 5150/OU812 were crappola tone and way too distorted and had his harmonizer too widely tuned, plus he was using those awful active pickups on the Steinberger tunes. But I think FUCK had amazingly clean, sustaining tones and he was using a Soldano SLO-100 and a Suhr custom made preamp. But I just heard "Ballot or the Bullet" from III on my iTunes mix and I have to say the tone is pretty killer.

His current tone, the only thing I can say is that it's too midrangy.

  • @frankenstrat25 That was a trick Jimmy Page used to do to boost his treble. Personally I think Page's tone was enigmatic; At times OK but others lousy.

Ed's tone on his worst day, is better than anything Page had come up with, in my opinion.

  • Man that was awesome! This is by far my favorite VH song, and you nailed it buddy!

  • Can you tab that? I cant seem to find a tab with the whole song. Btw thats probably the best cover of a song Ive evr heard. That one guy doesnt know what he's talking about!

  • yeah he does...hes knows what a complete tool he is. Dude just search on ebay for the VH songbooks of the complete albums...they are a lifesaver. Thats about the only way to get good Fair Warning tab

  • Anybody can sound decent playing along with the record. Try playing that song by yourself with a backingtrack or with a real band and then you'll wake up and smell the roses.

  • Only thing i smell is all your bullshit. Make me a guitarless backtrack of this song and ill prove your ass dead wrong. Oh and my band can play this song. So thanks for the brilliant comment , and thanks for watching haha

  • Wow, yet another useless comment by a dweeb with no videos of his own posted. Oh Please enlighten us Mr Dick Interceptor.

  • Wow! That's not one you hear a lot of. i wonder if EVH himself could just pick-up a guitar and play this song this good? I remember, many years ago in the late 80's he did an interview with G.W. and was talking about some tour where he had to play some of the really old V.H. and had to stop the tour bus and buy the records and listen to them so he could remember the songs. I guess when you've got as many songs as he's got and writing more, you tend to forget. Again, great job with this one.

  • eddies sober as ever and he cant play aint talkin bout love right lol this may sound wrong but i say ed have a beer

  • he probably wrote 95% of all the great songs drunk off his ass. the real problem is i dont think he gives a shit about playing the old stuff any more let alone play it the way it was...most VH fans want the old shit back. Ed has moved on and we havent HAHA

  • indeed

  • @satchbooggy it's the reduction of testosterone in our old age.

Eddie will never be the same,

I'm surprised you don't have any Vito Brata stuff

  • @satchbooggy in 78' when he recorded eruption with ted (templeman) he messed up, but it still made it haha.

  • @satchbooggy yeah except for eruption which he still plays the same way at every live concert ;)

Great playing man - love this song!

  • what epuipment r u usin

  • 97 wolfgang standard and a line 6 spider III (which i have long since sold)

  • do you think a spider IV could get this sound?

  • WOW,, f.n awesome,,, coming from a huge eddie fan !!!!

  • That an EVH musicman custom guitar? I love it. and this song. Your awesome

  • thats a peavy wolfgang theyre hard to tell apart but theres 1 thing the toggle switch is on the top cutaway when the musicman's is by the knobs

  • nice job dude! its hard to find another van halen lover like me! but i cant play alot of his stuff, wish i could play this one.

  • rad shit dude...i'm in an acdc cover band (s.t.d./c)...we're slowly adding more and more vh tunes...this ones next...thanks 4 posting

  • i need all the tabs for vh somehow

  • MAN! Pardon my french but like.....that is some stunningly fucking good banjo playing! You always amaze and inspire me Satch, Big Respect to you! I had to laugh at one of your responses (can't remember which vid) when you said you think Kent Carlevi is a professional, my missus said the exact same thing about you when she saw you play HA! She was trying to cheer me up because i was lamenting the fact that i have played guitar for almost as long as you but you are way, way better than me.

  • what tuning is this in?

  • Eb with dropped D

  • alex is the ONLY rock solid member of VH haha

  • true that but dave made some good songs 2

  • bloody fantastic.!!!!!

  • Yeeeeeeeeah!!!! 5 Staaars ;-)

  • Sammy Hagar = Tequila Salesman, Chicken-Fucked

David Lee Roth = Frontman Genius, Toastmaster General

  • eddie van halen's guitar work was complimented perfectly with david's wild charismatic style, besides the fact the guy can fucking sing his ass off. When david left, so did the epitomized spirit from van halen. fuck a sammy hagar.

  • Fuckin sweet!! . Well Done!!

  • I cannot get over how well you play the solo in this video. I could watch it over and over and over.

  • solo was kick ass man..nice

  • Kick-ass playing as always, brah.........your finger-tapping in the solo was KILLER.

  • Good job.

The picks in the foreground were a nice touch too.

  • good cover btw xD

gonna take some time for me to play like that :P

  • the dolphin-ish sound at 0:28, strings touch the pick ups?

  • nice wolfgang...shiny lol and sick playing if only i could play it :P

  • the song itself is easy. the solo is a motherfucker lol

  • Great job! you did your homework....How does it feel to accomplish this???it is certain that your playing extends further than what I just heard here. God given talent to have an ear like yours..........

  • Excellent solo man! Jesus

  • excellent!!!, at 1:44 it's very amazing!!!

  • thats where things can go very wrong haha

  • What is he doing at 1:38

It sounds like bird, please help to find this effect

  • thats just a standard pinch harmonic. eddie does them in every song hes ever recorded haha

  • awesome cover and guitar dude!

  • WOW ! Dude, you nailed that solo perfectly. This is one of my favorite VH tunes. Fair Warning is a way underrated VH album. How about that absolutely insane solo in "One Foot Out The Door." Great job satchbooggy !

  • Damn striaght, Fair Warning is what it's all about. It incinerates every other record in your stack. Top to bottom it's the most vicious album VH did. Killer satch!

  • I agree about Fair Warning.......it was a dark album for VH but also pure genius......every member of the band was in top form........"ferociously fun" I like to call it.

  • sacrement sa fait 20 ans que jai pas entendu cette tounne tu la rentre en vache lets rock~!!!!!

  • "She looked so fuckin good - So sexy and so fresh!"

You gotta love David Lee Roth!

  • I agree! This cat is bad, man. Nails all the VH!! Hats off brother!

  • You are killing me bro. I used to think I could play VH until I started watching you! Great job, you are the man :)

  • Very nice playing, man.

Do you use those sharkfin picks? I think I can see some at the bottom of the picture.

What is your favourite song from Fair Warning and your favourite from WACF?

  • I'm laughing...not at you, but at the fact that you really do nail the solo and it's an amazingly difficult solo to replicate (not for you, obviously)...and it's just awesome to watch. Thanks for sharing.

  • Where did you get these tabs?

  • dude the opening to this song is fucking awesome and you did a fucking awesome job Rock on :p

  • Are you f'ing kidding me! .. never seen anyone nail this solo.. you b@st@rd!!LOL!!.. Looks like my Wolfgang except I relabeled my head stock 'Michael Anthony' in protest. Now that Wolfgang's at summer camp can we get Mad Anthony back please.

  • I wish that I could email this video to all those assholes that I knew 20 years ago that thought they could play van halen and would just hammer on relentlessly during the solos without really ever knowing the notes. Thank God I'm a bass player otherwise I would get severely depressed watching you nail this solo. And the whole song for that matter, but this was one of my top favorite VH solos of all time. Ah well, I have 74 characters to go so I might as well use them up. They go fast, these c-

  • i love it when dave uses the F word lol... i have to agree with doc8ball9, you are the best guitar player online

  • satchboogy, how did you get that high squeal after the song sings "don't waste time" What was your technique? Please let me know!!

  • at 1:37? thats just a pinch harmonic. i botched it too, eddies come out so fuckin high. mine are hit and miss

  • oh sorry you mean at :51, thats just a pinch harmonic up at the 2nd fret D string

  • Dude, you are BY FAR the best at getting those VH tones I've seen, especially when you are using the Wolfgang guitar.

Are you using the EVH 5150 III head in all these videos??? I am thinking about buying one today. I would really like to know.

Thanks and KEEP POSTING, YOU ROCK!

  • the 5150III didnt last long. Its great for VH stuff but i need my effects fix so i went with the line 6 valve. I really like it. I use a spider 3 in 99% of my vids. The wolfgangs pickups are way different than pickups i have. Thats where vh tone comes from are those pickups.

  • at the solo you were dead on!!!man you were dead on the whole song you rock!!!!i wish i could play like you!!

  • Damm brother,,you may be the best i'v seen online, keep em rocking bro "Doc"

  • This, in my opinion, is one of the best tunes on the album and its actually the first Drop-D tuning VH song I learned, minus the solo, but you nailed it bud! This song never got the recognition it deserved. I was hoping they'd play it on the tour, but na.

  • all the cool songs were left out of the set list....im glad the tour is over.

  • awesome as usual!

  • Perfect! 5 stars

  • thanks !!

  • perfection

  • Swwet. You nailed it.

  • seriously dude... all of your videos just kick serious ass.

  • Hey Satch - did you ever play in a VH Tribute band in Canada? I remember seeing a dude in a place in Etobicoke Ontario that was real clean playing just like you. There certainly can't be two people that play that good.

  • ive never played in a tribute band but i appreciate the kind words. my band in the early 90's was called shattered steel. we covered 80's metal. =) ive been laying low on guitar for 10 yrs after that

  • Your hands are still pretty limber for 102yrs old.

  • yeah takes a lot of tiger balm but the arthritis is def. starting to set in.

  • you rule...awesome job!!

  • Great job!!

  • Another great job and another great tune!

What do you think about this comment I'm gonna make...

"Eddie's best solo is from 'Push Comes To Shove'"

You probably understand what I mean since you smoke all of his tunes quite well!

  • anything by evh smokes chief. ill keep putting them up there

  • You make it look so easy. How much would you charge to come to Malibu and teach me? (Ashley Olsen rented a condo here for the summer -- is that an incentive?)

  • hey man you can really lay those licks down!

plus thats a kick ass guitar.

only a wolfgang can give you that dive.

    keep rockin man!

  • that was right on! awesome job and then some! check out my site drummer/percuyssionist marty kays crossphyre thx way to rock u got it all and then some, marty party! major halen fan too!

  • I enjoyed that very much.. I'm glad i'm not alone... Great Job

  • DAAAAAAAAAAMN Homeboy!!! You're Eddie minus the drinking problem!

  • Matt: and minus the ex who looks just like him.

  • Just awesome-you nailed it-can't wait for Mean Streets-

  • Excellent work. You really nailed that solo. The shuffle riff on the pre-chorus is so damn nasty. I always found it difficult to emulate Ed's stuttering way of doing shuffles.

  • Dude, fucking insane, good job!

  • Shit i gotta learn that one dude...haha

  • That was killer , Do Mean Street next. You da man.
