Yes he is talking about God. I was at he CD release party for the CD that had this song on it and he said the song was about him backsliding in life and he was on a beach at 3 in the morning and he said God gave him the song.

I don't understand the lyric, "......I fell in love with somebody like you...." is that God? But why would it be "with somebody LIKE you?".
