Fwiw the minimum landing speed for a 104 (pilots called it the "Zipper" btw) is 150 kts (about 172 mph). Until the F-22 came along 40 or so years later, there was nothing that matched the 104's performance. A U-2 pilot cruising along at 60,000 ft saw two 104s join up on him, FROM ABOVE, and one 104 pilot said it was the only time he heard a Dragon Lady (the U-2 nickname) break radio silence. A 104 still holds the world record for ground level speed, 988 mph, set by Darryl Greenamyer.
sarebbe stato il mio sogno di sempre pilotare lo "spillone" peccato non avere avuto i paraculi necessari per entrare in AM.....e essersi dovuti accontentare dell'aviazione civile.
@Arny1719 Are you sure about that? Although I'm unfamiliar with reheat engines (only worked on Vipers and Alison 501s), I'm pretty sure most are catalytic ignition in the vapour gutters, aren't they? Pilot lights would be snuffed out. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
@MagnetiQs il titolo è sbagliato il TF 104 S non è mai esistito i biposto erano G......il video cmq è bellissimo e sentire l'ululato del J79-11 appunto il motore del G è fantastico
@agwhitaker I could not agree more! The 104 was an airplane for Pilots, not for the average knob-turner. And it wanted to go high and fast. If one needs a truffle-dog, better look for something else.
@agwhitaker the MiG 21 owned the F 104 in 1971 Indo pak war! The pakis discovered after all the hype that the F104 could not turn nor outrun the MiG 21 at medium level and Bhisnoi IAF MiG 21 pilot interceptedand used cannon to down PAF F 104 killing Paki pilot MIddlecoat whose body was never recovered.
@agwhitaker So it was not used for troop support or as an interceptor in Vietnam? Our RCAF used it as a "Rusky bomber" interceptor. I loved it's unique howl as a kid in the cold war:}
i was there at that moment with my camera and maded some pictures from this two TF-104G but a movie is much better to heard the sound of the J-79 engine its lovely .
sorry, not in english.
top !

Lockheed designed the F 104 Starfighter as a high altitude, fair weather interceptor.
At that job it worked great.
When a certain air-force tried to use it as a low level, all weather, ground attack fighter-bomber....
It did NOT work very well and tended to fly into mountains and stuff.
And so the F 104 got a bad name.
But I have always felt that it was like buying a sports car and then being pissed off at it because it didn't work well as a dump truck.

@agwhitaker Good call, though it is still an inherently unstable design. But still bloody impressive, nonetheless.

@agwhitaker Another way to look at it: certain air-forces were talked into the F104 (even bribed), and of course, that would cause a bad reputation.
That must have felt like being betrayed by your local car's dealer.
Would you wonder about a bad rep?
Wouldn't you be pissed off?
Would you buy there again?
