The only thing I don't like is the fact that in the beginning there is a shot of mountain tops that has been taken out. I remember seeing this for the first time when it was distributed on New York vieo years ago. It's just an establishment shot of the very top of the mountain. ( It's actually overturned farm dirt filmed in the morning with fog.) It's there for about 15 seconds and then you have the slow zoom in of the mountain side with all the explorers.

I don't know WHY they took it out.

I think in the documentary "My Best Friend" Werner Herzog explains that that was a shot that Kinski really wanted, but Herzog objected to. I could be wrong on that though.

Informative context, i.e. Pizarro, conquistadores, colonization, ascent of gold money, etc.. Spectacular shooting location, and good camerawork, but that's about it. Everything else is not as good. Apart from Kinski, the acting was weak, mainly because of a skeleton script that had to be heavily supported by narration. A very good subject matter like this deserves better film making effort. How about a remake by Mel Gibson!

For all this movie's visual excellence, it's slow pacing until the end really make it seem more dated than it actually is, and sadly, this hurts it badly.

Try to relax and get into the pace of it, KmKOmega. Watch full screen in a darkened room. In my humble opinion, any quickening of the pace would kill the whole experience. You can't argue with success. This film is universally regarded as a classic.

I liked it, it good movie. based on true story. klaus really has soem demented looks in soem scenes.,lays bare the demented european view of the what 2 new continents and and variety of earth and what they do with it..conquistadors had brass balls but i do not admire them.maybe next time line we will get it right on how to be on this earth.cuz this one is fried dried and scurilized.

I love this movie, it is a mastrpiece, have seen it a couple of times, but havent seen it in the last 10 years, and now that I watched it again it kind of bothers me they speak german instead of Spanish. However Kinski is great.

Yes, I can see how someone who is perhaps used to Hollywood movies in which everything has to be obvious, predictable, and fast paced, would find this movie "boring." However, this movie is perhaps one of the twenty best ever made in the history of world cinema, so it's unfortunate that you can't yet appreciate it. Perhaps when you're older you can revisit it and enjoy it.

Moreover, this film contains the history of the world in miniature. What has largely shaped the present? Colonization, genocide, power, exploitation, and slavery. It's a very powerful film that makes one think of all the moments and fateful decisions that have led to the present world we all live in.

One of my all-time favorite movies by Herzog. It's exactly in the same format I first saw it in a small theater in New York. I'm very pleased to have it available on YouTube. The legend about the making of this movie is that Kinski was threatening to walk off the set. Herzog pulled a gun on him and told him that he'd put 5 bullets in the actor and would then kill himself with the last bullet. Kinski stayed... Not sure if this is actually true, but it does make for a good story.
