as a subway junkie, i appreciate this vid a lot! great music. can i borrow that elderly gentleman for my urban planning school project?! lol he is well versed!
Very nice & respectful outlook on the jamaica el route Queensdude, yet i'm surprised that round 99th st? is an old abandonded LIRR Rockaway ROW that is there, underneath the el, yet the video jumps. You should try to get info on that as it canbe turn into another "high line park" such as the elevated park on the west side of manhattan. Just a thought. Great documentary though, kudos.
The Rockaway (Ozone Park, officially) line is unused from White Pot Underjump in Rego Park to just north of Rockaway Boulevard. From there on south, it's part of the IND Rockaway line. Proposals have been made to reactivate the northern section, as it would speed up commuting time into Manhattan from over 1 hour to about 25 minutes
Have heard someone's calling for that section to become a bike/hiking trail. I know of other rail sections not around here that share rail & bike paths -R.Miller
I remember riding it visiting my cousins when it reached the the last station at 168 st . We all used to go the Valentine or the Loews theater in da daze before they torned the last 40 blocks back around '77!
I ride the "Jamaica Elevated Line" practically all the time. The Mrytle Ave Elevated Turn off the Mrytle Ave El connecting the "Broadway" El, via the "S" Turn, always interested me. Years ago, I saw a Myrtle Ave / Chambers Street BMT "AB" car Train slowly going around the turn and just stop as it approcahed the "Broadway" El going west towards "Myrtle Ave & Broadway" station.
Used to travel this line to the end before they shortened it in the late 70's ??
Learned more about this train from your video than I ever did riding it for 20 years. Nicely done, brings back memories.
