@hipsterpad sometimes i have my swimmers use cut-off fins (half length of normal fins). This forces you to kick correctly, while increasing muscle strength. Also cut-off fins are great because they keep your kick small. Long fins force you to kick larger which is a bad habit.
Lastly, you will flex your knee on the kick...slightly...just remember to relax when you are swimming. If you are forcing it, then you are probably doing it wrong.
One of the swim instructors told me to relax my shoulders one day and since I've been able to kick. Sadly swimming without a noodle is impossible because I cant move my arms or doggie paddle :(.
hi all I am Brazilian and my name is ismael, I have 31 years live in João Pessoa-Paraiba nodeste of Brazil, I'm doing swimming lessons at a club, hoping that I learn to swim within plus or minus 2 months, although they only wanted float on water, the basics I know just want to learn to swim now standing on water, I find it very difficult, I wanted you to do some video of you were floating upright in the water and spend some hint. Thanks
anyone with advice on kick? i just started swimming last week, never been taught, so getting tips based here on (holy) youtube. i can do the arm motion (with a pull buoy, for instance), but with a board i drown. i can swim 30 times better using a pull buoy than without one and using my legs. and no, my legs aren't weak. i bike. help, please and thank you.
dont kick with dead straight legs. hes right you should kick from the hips, but if you hold your leg rigid your missing out on half the motion. bend your knees a little, and make sure your kicking motion is a least a foot from top to bottom
Whenever I don't have flippers on during swimming in gym i go insanely slow. I'm doing the kick right, but i barely move. Is it just because my muscles are small and weak? I don't really work out and im pretty skinny.
I hardly move foreward, while doing free style kick. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? Only while doing it on the back (stomach faceing the roof) am I able to move forward. My knees does not bend either.
the majority of the forward motion in front crawl comes from the arms, kicking your legs alone gives very little forward propulsion. A good kick, moving from the hip and not the knee, will help keep you body streamlined thus helping you concentrate on getting the max from your arm movements - it doesn't really mater how fast you kick, its more importnant to make sure your kick come from the hip
No, what is it with retards and giving shit advice like this. Kicking is a HUGE part of your freestyle stroke. You need to make sure that you have a very strong kick before you even think about your arms.
i hate freestyle kick and every other kick besides breastroke nothing ever feels righti kicked this way but it didnt feel like i was getting anywhere atleast now i know its the right way ty for posting
Look at 00:58 ... he says he's not bending his knees but it sure looks like he is. I think he's concentrating on not bending them, but there's still some bending as a side effect. Stuff like this really confounds us novices. I had a swimming lesson tonight where the instructor said "the knees should bend some".
They should bend, swimming with board straight legs is not possible slightly bending your legs at the knee will give a whipping motion giving more propulsion through the water.
thats soo hard

In swimming, the water doesn't support me. In running, the air doesn't push me and in flying, the air doesn't lift me. (sigh) I need wings.

I tend to kick downward and haven't been able to figure this out even with a kick board, anyone have advice on fixing that?

sguswim 2 years ago
@sguswim He wasn't 'sculling'... he was just keeping his torso and head out of the water!
OzClawhammer 2 years ago
@OzClawhammer he was just trying to show the kick he was sculling to maintain his position so he didnt drift away from the camera

the only kick i can manage any strong propulsion on is the scissor kick. i gotta try this flutter kick again, but i seem to go nowhere fast.

Crap video. He says not to bend the knees, then bends his knees at the end.... Will someone please link to a kicking vid that's actually helpful?
jlarpi 3 years ago
He says he exaggerates the straight leg to avoid the tendency to exaggerate the bending. Pay attention.
tammy842 3 years ago 5
Maybe an experienced swimmer would assume that's what he's implying.
A novice such as myself, would like instruction from someone who isn't a complete moron.
jlarpi 3 years ago
Implying? That's what he SAID. No offense, by why do you think I said pay attention?
